  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of agarwood (Thymelaeaceae) inhalation using an electric incense burner on stress and brain waves. Sixteen participants were included in the study during the period from September 2019 to April 2020. Participant recruitment was undertaken by the 'H' center. This paper focused on stress reduction and compared the differences in stress and brain waves before and after agarwood inhalation using an electric incense burner. Electroencephalography was measured by a 19 Channel, Brainmaster Discovery, and analyzed using a NeuroGuide, LORETA (Brain Mapping). The analysis of technical statistics was carried out using SPSS/WIN 21.0 and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The study observed that the stress response index was reduced by a significance level of 0.01 in patients with anxiety, depression, and somatization disorders after agarwood inhalation. Secondly, alpha waves were increased by a significance level of 0.05, in 18 out of 19 regions measured, except FP 1. The difference after agarwood inhalation was the most significant in the region that affects emotion. Thirdly, a LORETA analysis found that alpha waves were increased in the brain region (BA 40) predominantly responsible for memory and emotion. This result clarifies that agarwood inhalation using an electric incense burner reduced stress and had a positive effect on brain waves and hence, has potential as an alternative therapy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a 3-week somatosensory stimulation program on the integrity of the somatosensory pathway of patients with brain damage. Method: The sample consisted of two groups of patients with brain damage matched by Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores and age:8 patients with a mean age of 56.75 years who were treated with somatosensory stimulation, and 8 patients with a mean age of 58.88 years, who were not treated with sensory intervention program. A repeated measures matched-control group design was used to assess functional recovery of the brain. The instrument used in this study was SSEP (somatosensory evoked potentials), a neurophysiological parameter, for the integrity of the somatosensory pathway. Results: The hypothesis that patients with brain damage who were treated with the somatosensory stimulation program will show higher SSEP wave form scores than the non-treatment group was supported (3rd week.: U=13.000, p=.014). Additional repeated measures analysis showed that there were no significant differences in recovery trends between the groups (F=1.945, p=.159). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that a somatosensory stimulation program is effective in promoting recovery of the integrity of the somatosensory pathway of patients with brain damage.

  • This study investigated highschool students' brain waves on functional tasks such as a transition(F task) from equation to graph and the other transition(G task) vice versa. A total of 39 students participated in the study who attended a high school located in Gyunggi province. These students were divided into two groups, HMA and LMA by MASS test revised by Ko, & Yi (2012). The functional tasks for the stroop task to measure EEG were provided from a previous study, Seok(2015). The results indicated two groups on G tasks showed deeper and wider brain waves which demonstrated G tasks were more difficult than F tasks. However, HMA group had an effect of the non-psychological program which had given more chances on G tasks rather than F tasks within Students' Zone of Proximal Development. Also, HMA group's brain waves had more ranges in amplitude and width of waves. These results imply that the characteristics of students' brain waves with math anxiety are consistent to the previous studies.

  • We propose a brain-machine interface(BMI) based human-robot interaction(HRI) platform which operates machines by interfacing intentions by capturing brain waves. Platform consists of capture, processing/mapping, and action parts. A noninvasive brain wave sensor, PC, and robot-avatar/LED/motor are selected as capture, processing/mapping, and action part(s), respectively. Various investigations to ensure the relations between intentions and brainwave sensing have been explored. Case studies-an interactive game, on-off controls of LED(s), and motor control(s) are presented to show the design and implementation process of new BMI based HRI platform.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of 12-weeks aerobic exercise and taekwondo exercise on brain wave activation and brain-derived neurotrophic factors in undergraduate male students. Twenty four male subjects participated in this study. They were separated into a Control group(CG; n=8), Aerobic training group (ATG; n=8) and Taekwondo training group(TTG; n=8). ATG and TTG participated in Aerobic exercise training and Taekwondo exercise training for 12 weeks, 50~80 minutes per day, 3 times a week at 60~80% HRR respectively. All data were analyzed by repeated measures two-way ANOVA. As a result, there were no significant differences in the body composition and brain activation in all groups. However BDNF increased significantly after 12 weeks in the aerobic training groups(ATG). It is suggest that 12 weeks of regular Taekwondo exercise training did not statistically affect brain activation and neurotrophic factors in undergraduate students.

  • For the purpose of determining neurophysiological mechanism of math anxiety, we conducted an EEG measurement for 22 sixth grade elementary students including 11 students with high math anxiety (HMA group), and 11 students with low math anxiety (LMA group). We found that in HMA group, delta wave was significantly generated from the right frontal lobe, and in LMA group, four paths are clearly connected while they perform math tasks (right inferior occipital gyrus ${\leftrightarrow}$ left superior parietal lobule /left middle frontal gyrus ${\leftrightarrow}$ left inferior parietal lobule /left middle frontal gyrus ${\leftrightarrow}$ right inferior parietal lobule / right middle frontal gyrus ${\leftrightarrow}$ right inferior parietal lobule). According to the above results we suggest that math anxiety is related to emotions associated with pain, reduces working memory and has a negative effect on math performance.

  • Gradually increasing the value of the technology, the techniques of the various security systems to protect the core technology have been developed. The proposed security scheme, which uses both a Password and the various devices, is always open by malicious user. In order to solve that problem, the biometric authentication systems are introduced but they have a problem which is the secondary damage to the user. So, the authentication methods using EEG(Electroencephalography) signals were developed. However, the size of EEG signals is big and it cause a lot of problems for the real-time authentication. And the encryption method is necessary. In this paper, we proposed an efficient real-time authentication system applied encryption scheme with junk data using chaos map on the EEG signals.

  • In zoological research, penetration of light has been reported of the frontal bones of fish, birds, and reptiles, suggesting the existence of physiologically direct photic routes to frontal lobes and/or deep parts of the brain. We studied the influences of frontal exposure to photodiode light on frontal alpha wave and peripheral NK cells. Repetitive exposure of the subject's forehead to a red light diode (660nm) significantly increased the effective amplitude of the frontal alpha waves (using a mean frequency with a range of +1.0 Hz), peripheral NK activity, and the level of CD57-CD16+. Frontal alpha wave activity and the level of CD57-CD16+ increased, suggesting the possibility of a non-invasive procedure for the activation of the frontal lobe and the increase of NK cells. This light is considered to penetrate the frontal bones of humans directly, and to act on the frontal lobe and/or other immunological regulatory centers in the brain, resulting in some neuro-immunological changes.
