  • In this research, optical fiber sensors and shape memory alloys (SMA) were incorporated into sandwich panels for development of a smart honeycomb sandwich structure with damage detection and shape recovery functions. First, small-diameter fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were embedded in the adhesive layer between a CFRP face-sheet and an aluminum honeycomb core. From the change in the reflection spectrum of the FBG sensors, the debonding between the face-sheet and the core and the deformation of the face-sheet due to impact loading could be well detected. Then, the authors developed the SMA honeycomb core and bonded CFRP face-sheets to the core. When an impact load was applied to the panel, the cell walls of the core were buckled and the face-sheet was bent. However, after the panel was heated over the reverse transformation finish temperature of the SMA, the core buckling disappeared and the deflection of the face-sheet was relieved. Hence the bending stiffness of the panel could be recovered.

  • Various species of insects display vivid colors, widely known as 'structural color' due to their optical interference. Morpho butterflies are famous for their brilliant iridescent colors, which arise from the photonic-nanostructures of optical interference on their wings. In this paper, we outline the results of a comparative study of the optical properties of bio-inspired Morpho butterfly structures with the widely known Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR), conducted using a rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) method for the two structures. Almost analogous tendencies were observed for both Morpho and DBR structures. With variation in the surrounding media, however, Morpho structures showed an obvious peak shift while no significant changes were observed in DBR, which can be applicable.

  • Novel supervisory system for WDM transmission link using conventional optical time domain reflectometry was presented. By modifying the structure of erbuim doped fiber amplifier to support bi-directional transmission at arDR pulse wavelength and launching the optical pulse into transmission link in the opposite direction of data signal propagation to avoid the distortion by cross-gain modulation, it is possible to monitor the WDM link in service. To prove the validity of proposed scheme, the supervision result of 2.5 Gbps $\times$ 8 channel WDM 320 km transmission system in service by arDR was presented. And power penalty due to monitoring was measured as smaller than 0.3 dB. .3 dB.

  • A long-term bridge monitoring system has been introduced and is under operation for long-term safety management of the structure. However, it is difficult to assess the condition of the quantitative structural system as it only measures responses and does not measure input loads. To overcome these shortcomings, FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating)-based input load measurement sensors were developed in this paper for measuring highway bridge input loads and their validity was verified through laboratory tests.

  • Recently, it is required to develop a monitoring technology that combines an FBG sensor as a means for continuously monitoring whether reinforcing effect of FRP is maintained on FRP reinforced structural members. However, most existing researches focus on the insertion of FBG sensors into bar-shaped FRPs, and there is insufficient study on the details strip-type FRPs combined with FBG sensors. Therefore, in this paper, it is studied to develop a reinforcement in which a FBG sensor is combined with a FRP strip. Especially, combination of FRP and FBG sensor. For this, a series of experiments were performed to find the adhesive strength of fiber-FRP-epoxy joints, the tensile strength of FBG sensor part with reflection-lattice, and the performance depending on the connection method of FRF and FBG sensor. As a result of the study, it was found that a minimum strength of $216.15N/mm^2$ is required for incorporating FBG sensors in FRP using epoxy. It is considered that the adhesion length of epoxy joints should be more than 50mm. When the FBG sensor is attached to the FRP strip as an epoxy, it is considered appropriate to use the complete attachment and the sensor non-attachment method.

  • In this paper, a coupled-defected ground structure(C-DGS) using negative inductive coupling is proposed and a bandstop filter(BSF) using C-DGS is designed and fabricated. The proposed C-DGS is the closely-located DGS cells for the negative coupling, the negative coupling of ground currents between adjacent DGS cells greatly improves the stopband characteristics. The proposed BSF utilizing the sharp cutoff response of the C-DGS has a -10 dB rejection band from 4 GHz to 11.3 GHz. A maximum attenuation rate is -64.3 dB/GHz in 3 cell structure, -108 dB/GHz in 5 cell structure. The C-DGS BSF shows the improved attenuation rate 3.8 times in 3 cell structure, 2.4 times in 5 cell structure, Also, the C-DGS BSF is reduced to 35.2 % and 40 % of the DGS BSF, respectively, due to the closely-located DGS cells. We fabricated the single gate mixer using C-DGS BSF. The single gate mixer has 6.6 dB conversion gain.

  • A fiber optic sensor is prospective to be applied to structural health monitoring. Especially, a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor is one of the most popular sensors for the structural health monitoring. The FBG sensor has several demodulation systems for tracking the shift of the Bragg wavelength. The dynamic bandwidth is dependent on the demodulation system. In this paper, the sensing mechanism is that the slope of the optical spectrum of FBG could be used as its sensitivity when the tunable laser shot the monochromatic laser wavelength at the highest slope point. In this technique, the high sensitivity is guaranteed even though the sensing range is limited. In an example of the application, the composite plate embedding a FBG sensor was manufactured by using an autoclave method and the above sensing mechanism was applied to the composite plate. Firstly, the natural frequencies of the plate were successfully measured by the FBG sensor during the impact hammer test. Secondly, a high-power speaker was used to force the plate to be vibrated at the specific frequency that was one of the natural frequencies. During the shaking, the FBG sensor measures the dynamic characteristics and ESPI was also used to measure the mode shape. From the two dynamic tests, the availability of the FBG sensor system and the ESPI was proven as a technique for measuring the dynamic characteristics of composite structure.

  • In this research, we attempt to fabricate an excellent CFRC(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Carbon), which has good thermal and mechanical properties, with 8H/satin woven fabric prepreg, high modulus and high strength type continuous carbon fiber and raw coal tar pitch(RCTP) matrix or THF soluble fraction(THFSP) matrix which has good graphitizability. Green bodies were fabricated with hot press molding technique and CFRC samples were made after carbonization, impregnation, recarbonization and graphitization steps. For the purpose of characterization of the physical properties, SEM, polarized light microscope, TGA were observed, and tested flexural strength, modulus and ILSS. After heat treating the THFSP matrix up to $2300^{\circ}C$, the value of $C_0$/2 was 3.380$\AA$, which is analogous to the structure of natural graphite and the value of 2$\theta$ is $26.276^{\circ}$ approached to the Bragg's angle of natural graphite. As a result of TGA to test the high temperature air oxidation, the THFSP matrix, graphitized up to $2300^{\circ}C$, exhibited the best air oxidation resistance. And mechanical properties were increased up to 65~70% as fiber volume fraction increased. Because of the good orientation graphitizability, the fracture surface of THFSP matrix CFRC is very good.

  • This is a pilot study of machine learning based structural health monitoring system using flight data of composite aircraft. In this study, the most suitable machine learning algorithm for structural health monitoring was selected and dimensionality reduction method for application on the actual flight data was conducted. For these tasks, impact test on the cantilever beam with added mass, which is the simulation of damage in the aircraft wing structure was conducted and classification model for damage states (damage location and level) was trained. Through vibration test of cantilever beam with fiber bragg grating (FBG) sensor, data of normal and 12 damaged states were acquired, and the most suitable algorithm was selected through comparison between algorithms like tree, discriminant, support vector machine (SVM), kNN, ensemble. Besides, through neighborhood component analysis (NCA) feature selection, dimensionality reduction which is necessary to deal with high dimensional flight data was conducted. As a result, quadratic SVMs performed best with 98.7% for without NCA and 95.9% for with NCA. It is also shown that the application of NCA improved prediction speed, training time, and model memory.

  • The chitin was isolated from various kinds of insects such as exuvia of Psacothea hilaris Pascoe, silkworm pupa, Agrius convolvuli or from cuticle of cockroach by treatment with dilute HCI and NaOH. The chemical and crystalline structure was characterized by FT-IR and X-ray diffractometer. All of the chitins extracted from insects showed characteristic ${\alpha}$-chitin peaks at the Bragg angle 2$\theta$=9.3$^{\circ}$, 19.4$^{\circ}$, and 23.5$^{\circ}$by X-ray diffraction analysis. The transition from chitin to chitosan was confirmed by IR spectra and the degree of deacetylation of the crab shell, silkworm pupa, cockroach, and Psacothea hilaris Pascoe was 70.9, 76.4, 75.5, and 74.1%, respectively. The double diffraction peaks of insect chitosan were observed at 2$\theta$=10$^{\circ}$and 20$^{\circ}$, indication the characteristic of hydrated crystalline structure of chitosan.
