The structural strain plays a significant role in structural condition assessment of in-service bridges in terms of structural bearing capacity, structural reliability level and entire safety redundancy. Therefore, it has been one of the most important parameters concerned by researchers and engineers engaged in structural health monitoring (SHM) practices. In this paper, an SHM system instrumented on the Jiubao Bridge located in Hangzhou, China is firstly introduced. This system involves nine subsystems and has been continuously operated for five years since 2012. As part of the SHM system, a total of 166 fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors are installed on the bridge to measure the dynamic strain responses of key structural components. Based on the strain monitoring data acquired in recent two years, the strain-based structural condition assessment of the Jiubao Bridge is carried out. The wavelet multi-resolution algorithm is applied to separate the temperature effect from the raw strain data. The obtained strain data under the normal traffic and wind condition and under the typhoon condition are examined for structural safety evaluation. The structural condition rating of the bridge in accordance with the AASHTO specification for condition evaluation and load and resistance factor rating of highway bridges is performed by use of the processed strain data in combination with finite element analysis. The analysis framework presented in this study can be used as a reference for facilitating the assessment, inspection and maintenance activities of in-service bridges instrumented with long-term SHM system.

This paper describes a string resonator that is used for the interrogation system of a Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) strain sensor. The strain on the fiber piece is calculated from the measured frequency based on that the natural frequency of a string is a function of the applied absolute strain. Existing research considered a fiber as a string, but a fiber is not a string in the strict sense due to its bending stiffness, thus the fiber should be modeled as a beam accompanied with an axial force. In the vibration modeling, the relationship between the strain and the natural frequency is derived, and then the resonance condition is described in terms of both the phase and the mode shape for sustaining resonant motion. Several experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed model of the fiber. The performance of the string resonator is analyzed by measuring the frequency change according to the applied strains in the dynamic range of 1100$\mu\varepsilon$ referred to the displacement from capacitance sensor. From the experimental results, the implemented string resonator provides the accuracy of $\pm$3$\mu\varepsilon$, the quasi-static resolution of ~0.1$\mu\varepsilon$(rms) which amount to be $\pm$0.17$\mu\textrm{m}$ and ~6nm respectively, in case of fiber length of 56mm. For a dynamic strain, it can provide the accuracy of ~3$\mu\varepsilon$ until the frequency comes to 8Hz. As a consequence, the string resonator proposed for FBG sensor provides the high accuracy and the high resolution in strain measurement, and also it is expecting to be used, for the application, to not only strain but also displacement measuring device.
Composites are widely used for aircraft, satellite and other structures due to its good mechanical and thermal characteristics such as low coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE), heat-resistance, high specific stiffness and specific strength. In order to use composites under condition of high temperature, however, material properties of composites at high temperatures must be measured and verified. In this paper, material properties of T700/Epoxy were measured through tension tests of composite specimens with an embedded FBG sensor in the thermal chamber at the temperatures of RT, $100^{\circ}$, $200^{\circ}$, $300^{\circ}$, $300^{\circ}$. Through the pre-test of an embedded optical fiber, we confirmed the embedding effects of an optical fiber on material properties of the composites. Two kinds of specimens of which stacking sequences are [0/{0}/0]$_{T}$. and [$90_2$/{0}/$90_2$]. were fabricated. From the experimental results, material property changes of composites were successfully shown according to temperatures and we confirmed that fiber Bragg grating sensor is very appropriate to strain measurement of composites under high temperature.

Generally, estimations on the displacement as an important factor in evaluating the safety of large structures could be a barometer assessing whether the condition of the structure is deteriorating. Practically, it is not easy how to measure the displacement response to large structures like suspension bridges. In this study, as a method for estimation displacement response from strain signals, mode decomposition technique is proposed. Total displacement response is estimated by superposing quasistatic displacement response and modal displacement responses in dominant modes with larger contributions after estimating the modal displacement responses. If foiled strain gauges are used to measure strain signals, there would likely to generate electric noise, what's more, the more measuring points there are the more economic burden it could be. In order to solve such problems, fiber optic bragg-grating(FBG) sensors were used, which have multi-point measurements with no effect on electric noises. Therefore, the experiment was performed through dynamic load test of suspension bridge and plate-girder bridge to review the possibility for using mode decomposition technique.
In this study, we analyzed ridge-runnel structure and ripple marks by using Envisat ASAR, JERS-1 SAR images and in-situ data in Mongsanpo intertidal flat located in Taean-Gun, Korea. A group of light-and-dark lines parallel to the shoreline, alternating 3-5 times, were observed in the intertidal flat in Envisat ASAR images. The patterns are related to ridge-runnel structure in the intertidal flat exposed to air. Well-drained runnels, typically with ripple marks, showed strong backscattering while runnels submerged by surface water or ridges, typically smooth with no ripple, have weak backscattering coefficients in Envisat ASAR images. In JERS-1 SAR images, however, the backscattering was very low on the entire intertidal flat and no ridge-runnel structure could be observed. The wavelengths of ripple marks measured from in-situ observations have ranges from 4 to 10 cm that satisfies the Bragg scattering condition of the 1st-order in Envisat ASAR images operating in C-band, but not in JERS-1 SAR that used L-band. Through this study using SAR images, we could successfully analyze the sedimentary conditions of intertidal flats with ridge-runnel and ripple marks which are not easily observed by optical sensors. It is expected that the results of this study with SAR images will contribute to the sedimentary research over intertidal flats.
Bridge vibration displacements have been directly measured by LVDTs (Linear Variable Differential Transformers) or laser equipment and have also been indirectly estimated by an algorithm of integrating measured acceleration. However, LVDT measurement cannot be applied for a bridge crossing over a river or channel and the laser technique cannot be applied when the weather condition is poor. Also, double integration of accelerations may cause serious numerical deviation if the initial condition or a regression process is not carefully controlled. This paper presents an algorithm of estimating bridge vibration displacements using vibration strains measured by FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors and theoretical mode shapes of a simply supported beam. Since theoretically defined mode shapes are applied, even high modes can be used regardless of the quality of the measured data. In the proposed algorithm, the number of theoretical modes is limited by the number of sensors used for a field test to prevent a mathematical rank deficiency from occurring in computing vibration displacements.89The proposed algorithm has been applied to various types of bridges and its efficacy has been verified. The closeness of the estimated vibration displacements to measured ones has been evaluated by computing the correlation coefficient and by comparing FRFs (Frequency Response Functions) and the maximum displacements.
We present an autostereoscopic 3D display system using volume hologram. In this proposed system, the interference pattern of angular multiplexed plane reference and object beams are recorded into a volume hologram, which plays a role of guiding object beams of multi-view images into the desired perspective directions. For reconstruction, object beams containing the desired multi-view image information, which satisfy Bragg matching condition, are illuminated in the time-division multiplexed manner onto the crystal. Then multiple stereoscopic images are projected to the display plane for autostereoscopic 3D viewing. It is possible to make a high resolution multiview 3D display system independent upon the viewpoint.

The Fibre-optic Bragg grating (FBG) sensor is broadly accepted as a structural health monitoring device for Fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) materials by either embedding into or bonding onto the structures. The accuracy of the strain measured by using the FBG sensor is highly dependent on the bonding characteristics among the bare optical fibre, protective coating, adhesive layer and host material. In general, the signal extracted from the embedded FBG sensor should reflect the straining condition of the host structure. This paper presents a theoretical model to evaluate the differential strains between the bare fibre and host material with different adhesive thickness and modulus of the protective coating of the embedded FBG sensor.
This paper presents the structural performance monitoring of an urban footbridge located in Hangzhou, China. The structural health monitoring (SHM) system is designed and implemented for the footbridge to monitor the structural responses of the footbridge and to ensure the structural safety during the period of operation. The monitoring data of stress and displacement measured by the fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors installed at the critical locations are used to analyze and assess the operation performance of the footbridge. A linear regression method is applied to separate the temperature effect from the stress monitoring data measured by the FBG-based strain sensors. In addition, the static vertical displacement of the footbridge measured by the FBG-based hydrostatic level gauges are presented and compared with the dynamic displacement remotely measured by a machine vision-based measurement system. Based on the examination of the monitored stress and displacement data, the structural safety evaluation is executed in combination with the defined condition index.
By using an equivalent network based on Floquet's theorem and bisection principle, the optical properties of planar DFB guiding structure are evaluated. The optical parameters, such as Bragg condition and the reflectivity as a function of grating period, are numerically calculated. The numerical results reveal that this method offers a simple and convenient algorithm to analyze the optical characteristics of DFB configurations.
