In this paper, the membrane and buckling analysis of beams with various shaped brackets is performed by using the finite element method. From the viewpoint of minimum structural weight, a optimum design method to determine the optimal shapes and scantling of brackets under design load is proposed by investigating the effects of beam depth, bracket length and aspect ratio on the structural weight. Also optimal design data and charts for the brackets to support transverse girders or web frames of actual ships are provided. By the present design method, it is possible to perform optimum design of brackets used in actual ships, which could result in considerable reduction of structural weight or cost, increase of dead weight and service speed of ships.
The principal aims of this study were to identify the composition of salivary pellicles formed on various orthodontic brackets and to obtain a detailed information about the protein adsorption profiles from whole saliva and two major glandular salivas. Four different types of orthodontic brackets were used. All were upper bicuspid brackets with a $022{\times}028$ slot Roth prescription; stainless steel metal, monocrystalline sapphire, polycrystalline alumina, and plastic brackets. Bracket pelicles were formed by the incubation of orthodontic brackets with whole saliva, submandibular-sublingual saliva, and parotid saliva for 2 hours. The bracket pellicles were extracted and confirmed by employing sodium dodecyl sulfatepolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, Western transfer methods, and immunodetection. The results showed that low-molecular weight salivary mucin, ${\alpha}-amylase$, secretory IgA (sIgA), acidic proline-rich proteins, and cystatins were attached to all of these brackets regardless of the bracket types. High-molecular weight mucin, which promotes the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans, did not adhere to uy orthodontic brackets. Though the same components were detected in all bracket pellicles, however, the gel profiles showed qualitatively and quantitatively different pellicles, according to the origins of saliva and the bracket types. In particular, the binding of sIgA was more prominent in the pellicles from parotid saliva and the binding of cystatins was prominent in the pellicles from the form plastic brackets. This study indicates that numerous salivary proteins adhere to the orthodontic brackets and these salivary proteins adhere selectively according to bracket types and the types of the saliva.
Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus are major etiological agents in enamel demineralization around orthodontic appliances. This study was designed to examine the prevalence of these streptococci on orthodontic brackets in vivo using polymerase chain reaction. Four incisor brackets in the upper and lower arches were removed and collected from 80 patients at the time of debonding. The genomic DMA of adhered bacteria was extracted and each dextranase gene of S. mutans and S. sobrinus was amplified using the specific oligonucleotide primers. The results showed that the maxillary incisor brackets were colonized by both cariogenic streptococci to a somewhat higher degree than that taken from the mandible. The prevalence of S. mutans was $50.0\%$ on the maxillary incisor brackets and $33.8\%$ on the mandibular incisor brackets, and that of S. sobrinus was $17.5\%$ and $15.0\%$, respectively. Both species were detected on the maxillary incisor brackets of 7 patients $(8.8\%)$ and the mandibular incisor brackets of 5 patients $(6.3\%)$. These results suggest that cariogenic streptococci can adhere to the incisor brackets and may be resident species on the incisor brackets.
Objective: The coefficients of friction (COFs) of aesthetic ceramic and stainless steel brackets used in conjunction with stainless steel archwires were investigated using a modified linear tribometer and special computer software, and the effects of the bracket slot size (0.018 inches [in] or 0.022 in) and materials (ceramic or metal) on the COF were determined. Methods: Four types of ceramic (one with a stainless steel slot) and one conventional stainless steel bracket were tested with two types of archwire sizes: a $0.017{\times}0.025$-in wire in the 0.018-in slots and a $0.019{\times}0.025$-in wire in the 0.022-in slot brackets. For pairwise comparisons between the 0.018-in and 0.022-in slot sizes in the same bracket, an independent sample t-test was used. One-way and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post-hoc test at the 95% confidence level (${\alpha}$ = 0.05) were also used for statistical analyses. Results: There were significant differences between the 0.022-in and 0.018-in slot sizes for the same brand of bracket. ANOVA also showed that both slot size and bracket slot material had significant effects on COF values (p < 0.001). The ceramic bracket with a 0.022-in stainless steel slot showed the lowest mean COF (${\mu}$ = 0.18), followed by the conventional stainless steel bracket with a 0.022-in slot (${\mu}$ = 0.21). The monocrystalline alumina ceramic bracket with a 0.018-in slot had the highest COF (${\mu}$ = 0.85). Conclusions: Brackets with stainless steel slots exhibit lower COFs than ceramic slot brackets. All brackets show lower COFs as the slot size increases.
Objective: To test the null hypothesis that SmartClip self-ligating brackets are more effective than conventional brackets for initial mandibular alignment and identify influential factors. Methods: Fifty patients were randomly allocated to two equal treatment groups by using an online randomization program: self-ligating group (SmartClip brackets) and conventional group (Gemini brackets). The archwire sequence was standardized. Changes in anterior irregularity index, intercanine width, and intermolar width were assessed on plaster models at 8th and 16th weeks. Changes in incisor position and inclination were assessed on lateral cephalometric radiographs at 16 weeks. Intragroup and intergroup comparisons were performed with paired t-test and Student's t-test, respectively. Multiple linear regression was performed to identify variables affecting improvement in anterior ambiguity. Results: Data of 46 patients were analyzed; those missing an appointment (n = 2) or showing bracket breakage (n = 2) were excluded. Incisor inclination (p < 0.05), intercanine width (p < 0.05), and intermolar width (p > 0.05) increased at 8 and 16 weeks in both the groups; no significant intergroup differences were noted (p > 0.05). Initial anterior irregularity index and intercanine width change were significantly associated with improvement in anterior irregularity (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The null hypothesis was rejected. Bracket type has little effect on improvement in anterior ambiguity during initial mandibular alignment.

Light-cured orthodontic composite resin has been widely advertised recently for use in bonding brackets. However, the curability of light-cured resin when light waves are diffused through metal brackets in questionable. The purposes of this study were to evaluate shear bond strength and failure patterns of visible light-cured resin(Lightbond) and chemically cured-resin(Mono-Lok 2), and to determine the relative value of light-cured resin as an alternative to conventional chemically cured resin. Each of the two resins was tested on twenty extracted human first premolars. Standard edgewise metal brackets were bonded to the teeth in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendation. After bonding, the teeth were stored for 24 hours at $37^{\circ}C$, 100% humidity. The shear bond strength was tested with a universal testing machine(Instron 4302), at 0.5mm/min crosshead speed. After debonding, brackets and enamel surfaces were examined with a scanning electron microscope and a stereoscopic microscope. The results were as follows : 1. Metal brackets bonded with Lightbond showed statistically higher shear bond strength than metal brackets bonded with Mono-Lok2. 2. The predominant failure site in Lightbond was the enamel-resin interface, and in Mono-Lok 2 it was the resin itself. 3. Enamel cracks were not found in any specimen. The above results suggest that direct bonding of metal brackets to enamel with light-cured resin bonding agent can be used effectively in clinics.
This study was undertaken to compare the bond strength and the fracture site of new and recycled brackets according to the base design. 252 sound premolars extracted for orthodontic treatment were collected and Type I, Type II, Type III brackets were divided into four groups by recycling method Each bracket was then bonded to an extracted premolar. Instron Universal Testing Machine(model W) was used to measure the shear bond strength, and the surface of the recycled brackets were viewed in SEM For the analysis of the results, one way ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple range test was executed using the SPSSWIN program. 1. The shear bond strength showed statistically significant difference according to the bracket base design(p<0.001). Type III bracket(round indentation base, micro-etched) showed the highest bond strength, Type I bracket(foil-mesh base) was second, and Type II bracket(grooved integral base, micro-etched) was last. 2. The effect of recycling on the bond strength was different according to bracket type. The shear bond strength of Type I, Type II brackets showed the smallist reduction when treated for 1 minute in Big Jane(p<0.05), but the shear bond strength of Type III brackets showed no statistically significant difference according to recycling method(p>0.05). 3. In Type I, Type II brackets, frequent fracture site was bracket-resin interface, but in Type III brackets, about half of the resin was retained on the tooth surface frequently. 4. The shear bond strength was highest when about half of the resin was retained on the tooth surface(p<0.05). 5. The resin remnant on the bracket base after recycling had no effect on the shear bond strength.
Although ceramic brackets have been used widely for improved esthetics during treatment, ceramic brackets have some inherent problems; brittleness, attrition of the opposing teeth and high frictional resistance. This study was performed to understand the frictional resistance of the ceramic brackets, as well as to be a helpful reference for finding the solutions to the problem of frictional resistance. Three different kinds of brackets were used; metal bracket, polycrystalline ceramic brackets with a metal slot to reduce the high frictional resistance and monocrystalline ceramic brackets. The brackets were tested with a $.019{\times}.025$ stainless steel wire with a second order angulation of $0^{\circ}\;and\;10^{\circ}$, and the static and kinetic frictional forces were measured on the universal testing machine. The results of this study showed that the ceramic brackets, especially the monocrystalline ceramic bracket without a metal slot, generated higher frictional resistance than the metal bracket, and the frictional resistance was increased as the angulation between the bracket slot and the wire increased. Therefore, the development of the ceramic bracket with reduced frictional resistance and the prevention of excessive crown tipping during orthodontic treatment will lead to the simultaneous attainment of more efficient and improved esthetic treatment goals.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of ultrasonic instrumentation with different scaler-tip angulations on the shear bond strength (SBS) and bond failure mode of metallic orthodontic brackets. Methods: Adhesive pre-coated metallic brackets were bonded to 72 extracted human premolars embedded in autopolymerizing acrylic resin. The teeth were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 24 each) to undergo no treatment (control group) or ultrasonic instrumentation with a scaler-tip angulation of $45^{\circ}$ ($45^{\circ}$-angulation group) or $0^{\circ}$ ($0^{\circ}$-angulation group). SBS was tested in a universal testing machine, and adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were recorded. The Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U-test were used for statistical analysis. Results: The control group had a significantly higher mean SBS value than the treated groups, which showed no significant differences in their mean SBS values. The ARI scores were not significantly different among the groups. Conclusions: Ultrasonic instrumentation around the bracket base reduces the SBS of metallic orthodontic brackets, emphasizing the need for caution during professional oral hygiene procedures in orthodontic patients. The scaler-tip angulation does not influence the SBS reduction and bond failure mode of such brackets.

Self-ligating brackets have a permanently installed movable component to entrap the archwire which reduces much of the friction created by conventional ligation. Therefore, it allows for rapid tooth movement and shorter overall treatment time. Due to these advantages, interest in self-ligating brackets is increasing. In this report, several practical considerations for using self-ligating brackets are given to appreciate and maximize their benefits. It is thought that self-ligating brackets make shorter and more efficient treatment possible.
