A new and a unique Brachionus rotifer was found in Hwajinpo coastal lagoon in Gangwon Province, South Korea. This Brachionus certainly originated from the wild rather than from aquaculture stations because Hwajinpo coastal lagoon has been under rigorous control as a military protected area and therefore could not have been contaminated by aquaculture stations. The new strain was identified as Brachionus rotundiformis based upon its morphological characteristics. The parthenogenetic female of this new rotifer strain typically shows characters similar to those of B. rotundiformis, such as the pot shape of the body, rounded dorsal plate compared with flattened ventral plate, elliptical mictic egg, four frontal spines, six pointed occipital spines, non-nodal foot, two toes, trophi typical of the Brachionus genus with five uncus plates resembling comb teeth, one wide symmetrical manubrium and ramus, and no stiffened spine as is seen in freshwater Brachionus rotifers. Moreover, its lorica was rather small in size compared with other common rotifer strains that serve as live-food organisms (Guam, Thai, and Bali strains). This new and unique Korean brackish rotifer, a B. rotundiformis strain, was therefore named the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) $N^{\circ}1$ rotifer strain.
Response-species of zooplankton on precipitation and temperature were investigat-ed in the tributaries of Han River from May to November, 2002. Total 42 species(Rotifer twenty three species, Cladocera ten species, Copepoda eight species and Protozoa one species) were collected in the target location. The highest abundance and the number of species were observed in May. Due to the summer precipitation the abundance of Rotifer and Cladocera were largely decreased in August. Dominant species of Rotifer appeared Brachionus urceolaris, Euclanis dilatata, Lecane Inua, Brachionus quadridentatus and Brachionus calyciflorus in May, Monostyla bulla and Conochilus unicornis in August and Brachionus quadridentatus, Euclanis dilatata and Lecane Iuna in November. Also, the dominant species of Cladocera were Moina weismanni, Simocephalus vetulus, Scapholebris aucrgnafa, Chydorus sphaericus in May, Chydorus sphaericus, Scapholebris mucronata in August, Chydorus sphaericus and Alona rectangular in November. Nearest neighbour clustering was implemented for classification of zooplankton abundance indifferent month of survey locations. The patterning of May and November appeared similar but August was different.

Cellulase was purified from marine rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, to homogeneity by using chromatographic methods. Purified enzyme is an endo-${\beta}$-1,4 glucanase and shows a strong hydrolytic activity against carboxymethyl (CM) -cellulose. The physicochemical parameters of enzyme activity were determined. The molecular weight of the purified protein was approximately 62 kDa as determined by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The enzymatic capability to digest cellulose of Chlorella cell wall was compared with that of other well known cellulases from Thermomonospora fusca. Experiments involving Chlorella digestion indicated that CM-cellulase from marine rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, could digest Chlorella very efficiently while cellulase purified from Thermomonospora fusca did not. From the result here, we propose that the cellulolytic system from marine rotifer is responsible for the hydrolysis of cellulosic wall of Chlorella, probing that rotifer digests Chlorella as a major live food.
The systematic studyof freshwater rotifers was conducted on the materials collected from 205 sites in South Korea. As a result, 1 species, 9 subspecies, 2 varieties and 6 forms of two genera. Brachionus and platyas in Family Brachionidae were identified, of Which , 1 subspecies and 4 forms are new to the Korean fauna: Brachionus urceolaris bennini , B. angularis f. bidens , B. quadridentatus, f. rhenanus, B. forficula f. minor, and B. forficula f. angularis. Total 134 speices, 15 subspecies, 9 varieties and 9 forms representing 14 families 40 genera are now recorded from Korea by adding the 1 subspecies and 4 forms newly described in the present paper.
The following are some results obtained from a series of experiments in rotifer culture and its usage for the food of tiny fish fry: 1, Outdoor concrete ponds, each being $16m^2$, were used to culture the rotifers, Brachionus calyciflorus, and Filinia longiseta. Brachionus calyciflorus usually attained the population of about 100 individuals per ml of pond water. Dipterex was usually applied to control Daphni,a and other crustaceans that generally appear and feed on rotifers. A concentration of 0.16 to 0.2 ppm in the pond water was sufficiently effective to control these natural enimies of rotifers. Poultry dung was very effectively used to multiplicate rotifers. The fertilization ratio was about 8 kg each pond with 30cm depth of water. 2. The tiny rotifer, Filinia longiseta attained a very high population density of about 1,000 individuals per ml of pond water, but they were very sensitive to dipterex, and for this aspect future investigation may be needed. 3. In the outdoor ponds, the multiplication of rotifers significantly decreased when the water temperature falls to about $20^{\circ}C$ in autumn. 4. In the laboratory room, unicellular planktonic algae such as Scenedesmus or Chlorella, as the food of rotifers, were collected from the outdoor ponds by dipping them together with water, and were effectively used for the culture of Brachionus calyciflorus. If the planktonic algae are cultured in specially designed containers, the sun-light would be the most effective means as the source of light. 5. Brachionus calyciflorus cultured in the outdoor ponds by the dipterex controlled method was highly efficient to rear the early fry of marble gourami. The dipterex content mixed in the water to control the crustacean emmies of rotifers sieved no harm to the gourami fish fry.

The herbivorous rotifers community (Brachionus spp.) and population dynamics of the predator rotifer (Asplanchna spp.) in three tributaries (Kumho R., Nam R., and Hwang R.) of the Nakdong River were evaluated on biweekly intervals from Jan. 2001 and Dec. 2002. High abundance of the herbivorous rotifers (peak density: - ca.>1000 Ind. $L^{-1}$) was observed from two tributaries (Kumho R. and Nam R.) during the spring and fall seasons, respectively. The high peaks of herbivorous rotifers were not evident in one tributary (Hwang R.). Among the herbivorous rotifers, brachionid rotifers (Brachionus spp. consisting of 7 species) were the characteristic rotifer community in this study. Brachionus spp. tended to occur together with the other perennial species, Asplanchna. Asplanchna was also present while two species of B. angularis and B. calyciflorus were highest in density. Subsequently, two populations (B. angularis and B. calyciflorus) rapidly declined, becoming rare after high peaks of Asplanchna occurred, except in one tributary (Hwang R.). We found community shifts in rotifer groups in mid-spring and mid-fall at the study site. The Asplanchna population could be appeared to play an important role in regulating the rotifer community and total plankton biomass in spring and fall at high trophic levels.
