A solar thermal collector is a solar collector specifically intended to collect heat: that is, to absorb sunlight to provide heat. A flat plate is the most common type of solar thermal collector, and is usually used as a solar hot water panel to generate solar hot water. A flat plate collector consists basically of an insulated metal box with a glass or a plastic cover and a dark-colored copper absorber plate. Solar radiation is absorbed by the copper absorber plate and transferred to water that circulates through the collector in copper tubes. Ultrasonic welding is an industrial technique whereby high-frequency ultrasonic acoustic vibrations are locally applied to work pieces being held together under pressure to create a solid-state weld. In this study, we developed solar collector ultrasonic welding machine with digital controlled power supply and tested various welding conditions such as welding pressure, welding amplitude, welding speed. Welding speed was considered in 2~12m/min. The width of ultrasonic welds was increased with welding amplitude by 2.2~2.5mm. The fracture load of ultrasonic welds showed 20% higher than domestic products.

Thermal dissipation was investigated for poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) composite films containing graphite and multi wall carbon nanotube(CNT) powders as filler materials. After mixing PMMA with fillers, solvent, and dispersant, the pastes were prepared by passing through a three roll mill for three times. The prepared pastes were coated $15{\sim}40{\mu}m$ thick on a side of 0.4 mm thick aluminium alloy plate and dried for 30 min at $150^{\circ}C$ in an oven. The content of fillers in dried films was varied as 1, 2, and 5 weight % maintaining the ratio of graphite and CNT as 1:1. Raman spectra from three different samples exhibited D, G and 2D peaks, as commonly observed in graphite and multi wall CNT. Among those peaks, D peak was prominent, which manifested the presence of defects in carbon materials. Thermal emissivity values of three samples were measured as 0.916, 0.934, and 0.930 with increasing filler content, which were the highest ever reported for the similar composite films. The thermal conductivities of three films were measured as 0.461, 0.523, and $0.852W/m{\cdot}K$, respectively. After placing bare Al plate and film coated samples over an opening of a polystyrene box maintained for 1 h at $92^{\circ}C$, the temperatures inside and outside of the box were measured. Outside temperatures were lower by $5.4^{\circ}C$ in the case of film coated plates than the bare one, and inside temperatures of the former were lower by $3.6^{\circ}C$ than the latter. It can be interpreted that the PMMA composite film coated Al plates dissipate heat quicker than the bare Al plate.

Longitudinal cracks due to traffic truck loadings that are caused by local deformations of steel orthotropic bridge decks are sometimes observed in the wearing surface. So, underlying causes of the longitudinal pavement crack induced by structural behaviors of steel decks are investigated in this study. For this purpose, The rational finite element model of the steel deck and the pavement having the box girder is developed and a parametric study is performed by varying thickness or elastic modulus ratios of both the steel deck plate and the pavement. As a result, a large tensile strain above the webs of the u-rib and the box girder, which becomes the main cause of the cracks of the pavement, is detected from variation of the normal strain component of the wearing surface in the transverse direction.
Ships in bad weather conditions are likely to be subjected to accidental loads, such as high bending moment, collision, and grounding. Once she has damage to her hull, her ultimate strength will be reduced. This paper discusses an investigation of the effect of collision damage on the ultimate strength of a ship structure by performing a series of collapse tests. For the experiment, five box-girder models with stiffeners were prepared with a cross section of $720mm\;{\times}\;720mm$ and a length of 900mm. Of the five, one had no damage and four had an ellipse shaped damage area that represented the shape of the bulbous bow of a colliding ship. The amount of damage size was different between models. Among the damaged models, the damage in three of them was made by cutting the plate and stiffener, and in one by pressing to represent collision damage. Experiments were carried out under a pure bending load and the applied load and displacements were recorded. The ultimate strength was reduced as the damage size increased, as expected. The one with the largest amount of damage had damage to 30% of the depth, and its ultimate strength was reduced by 19% compared to the undamaged one. The pressed one has higher ultimate strength than those that were cut. This might be due to the fact that the plate around the pressed damage area contributes to the ultimate strength, whereas the cut one has no plate to contribute.

The interest in evaluation of structural intensity arises for practical reasons, because net energy flow distribution offers information of energy transmission path, positions of sources, and sinks of vibration energy. In this paper, structural intensity analysis of local ship structures using finite element method(FEM) is carried out. The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate the relative accuracy according to mesh fineness. The structural intensity of unstiffened and stiffened plates varying their mesh fineness is analyzed and the results are compared with those obtained by the assumed mode method. As results, the proper mesh size in qualitative/quantitative structural intensity analysis of plate structures is proposed. In addition, the propagation phenomenon of vibration energy is investigated for the thickness-varying flat plate, L-type plate, and box-girder structures.
For box girders in which the longitudinal tendon is profiled in the inclined webs, longitudinal prestressing force will induce transverse effects as well as longitudinal ones. In this paper, the method to estimate transverse effects induced by longitudinal prestressing is proposed. The concept of transverse equivalent loading which is calculated through longitudinal prestressing analysis is developed. The transverse stress in slabs of box girders due to longitudinal prestressing are investigated. The comparison of numerical results of the proposed method and those of folded plate method represents that the method is reasonable. Numerical analyses are carried out depending on the parameters such as web inclination and ratio of girder length to tendon eccentricity. Analysis results show that when only prestressing are considered the magnitude of transverse stress in slabs of box girder is not so large. However, if the other stresses due to dead and live load et al. are superposed on these stresses, it may be that the longitudinal prestressing effects are significant.
In this paper, the results of monotonic loading analysis with four steel models and one composite model were shown. The effect that moment transfer efficiency of a web and strain concentration at a steel beam-to-column connections was investigated. Analysis results showed that the moment transfer efficiency of the analytical model with box-column was poor when comparing to model with H-column due to out-of-plane deformation of the box-column flange. The presence of scallop, thin plate of box column and floor slabs was also a reason of the decrease of moment transfer efficiency, which would result in a potential fracture of the steel beam-to-column connections. Analytical results were compared with experimental results based on previous test. As a result, the deformation capacity of connections with a box-column or a floor slab decreased due to the poor moment transfer efficiency and the strain concentration of beam flange in the vicinity of the steel beam-to-column connections based on the experimental data.
There are numerous structural details (Longitudinal beam, web plate, U-ribs and I-ribs) in the top and bottom plates of steel box girders, which have significant influences on the longitudinal stress (normal stress) distribution. Clarifying the influence of these structural details on the normal stress distribution is important. In this paper, the ultra-wide steel box girder with large cantilevers of the Jinhai Bridge in China, which is the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, has been analyzed. A 1:4.5 scale laboratory model of the steel box girder has been manufactured, and the influence of structural details on the normal stress distribution in the top and bottom plates for four different load cases has been analyzed in detail. Furthermore, a three-dimensional finite element model has been established to further investigate the influence regularity of structural details on the normal stress. The experimental and finite element analysis (FEA) results have shown that different structural details of the top and bottom plates have varying effects on the normal stress distribution. Notably, the U-ribs and I-ribs of the top and bottom plates introduce periodicity to the normal stress distribution. The period of the influence of U-ribs on the normal stress distribution is the sum of the single U-rib width and the U-rib spacing, and that of the influence of I-ribs on the normal stress distribution is equal to the spacing of the I-ribs. Furthermore, the same structural details but located at different positions, will have a different effect on the normal stress distribution.

A four-noded curved shell finite element for the geometrically non-linear analysis of beams curved in plan is introduced. The structure is conceived as a sequence of macro-elements (ME) having the form of transversal segments of identical topology where each slice is formed using a number of the curved shell elements which have 7 degrees of freedom (DOF) per node. A curved box-girder beam example is modelled using various meshes and linear analysis results are compared to the solutions of a well-known computer program SAP2000. Linear and non-linear analyses of the beam under increasing uniformly distributed loads are also carried out. In addition to box-girder beams, the proposed element can also be used in modelling open-section beams with curved or straight axes and circular plates under radial compression. Buckling loads of a circular plate example are obtained for coarse and successively refined meshes and results are compared with each other. The advantage of this element is that curved systems can be realistically modelled and satisfactory results can be obtained even by using coarse meshes.

This study was carried out the laboratory tests and field plate load test in order to evaluate the reinforcement effect of geocell for road construction. The geocell-reinforced subgrade shows the increment of cohesion and friction angle with comprison of non-reinforced subgrade. In addition, the field plate load test was performed on the geocell-reinforced subgrade to estimate the bearing capacity of soil. The direct shear test was conducted with utilizing a large-scale shear box to evaluate the internal soil friction angle with geocell reinforcement. The number of cells in the geocell system is varied to investigate the effect of soil reinforcement. The theoretical bearing capacity of subgrade soil with and without geocell reinforcement was estimated by using the soil internal friction angle. The field plate load tests were also conducted to estimate the bearing capacity with geocell reinforcement. It is found out that the bearing capacity of geocell-reinforced subgrade gives 2 times higher value than that of unreinforced subgrade soil. In the future, the reinforcement effect of the geocell rigidity and load-balancing effect of the geocells should be evaluated.
