  • The objective of this study is to propose the FE model for mechanical clinched joint using cohesive zone model to analyze its failure behavior under impact loading. Cohesive zone model (CZM) is two-parameter failure criteria approach, which could describe the failure behavior of joint using critical stress and fracture toughness. In this study, the relationship between failure behavior of mechanical clinched joint and fracture parameters is investigated by FE analysis with CZM. Using this relationship, the critical stress and fracture toughness for tensile and shear mode are determined by H-type tensile test and lap shear test, which were made of 5052 aluminum alloy. The fracture parameters were applied to the tophat impact test to evaluate the crashworthiness. Compared penetration depth and energy absorption at the point where 50% of total displacement in result of FE analysis and experiment test for impact test, those has shown similar crashworthiness.

  • To provide more instructive and a safer ground control operation environments for satellite operators, and subsequently to implement a better look-and-feel user interface and a structural mechanism to enhance the efficiency of control and monitoring facilities, we have developed a prototype(laboratory model) ground control softwares targeting for the first generation KOREASAT scheduled to be launched in 1995. As far as the functionality is concerned, the developed system is covering almost all the mission phase operational functions except for some functions like antenna tracking control that are necessary for real operation environments. Most of the functions of the system is realized in softwares but some hardwares needed for TM/TC RF communications are also included in it. The system is now being integrated and under the system test. The performance and functionality is to be evaluated by the end of this year by using the satellite software simulator. Next year, this system could be configured to be used as a workbench for a online/off-line analysis of the operating KOREASAT satellites.

  • For the last 30 years, the use of EPS as a lightweight filling material has grown significantly throughout the world. The fields of applying EPS block have also increased. The most representative example in geotechnical applications is using EPS block as a compressible inclusion that causes the reduction of static earth pressure on earth-retaining wall, bridge abutment and pipes. EPS blocks have a good workability by its lightweight characteristic and a uniform engineering property with the change of its density. Also EPS blocks have best material property as a compressible inclusion. This paper analyzes that the compressible inclusion function of EPS causes the reduction of static earth pressure on retaining wall and concrete box culvert. A series of in-situ tests were conducted to evaluate the reduction of static earth pressure using EPS inclusion. Based on in-situ test, it is found that the magnitude of static earth pressure was reduced to about 20% for the retaining wall and about 45∼53% for the box culvert compared with theoretical active earth pressure.

  • Background: Sexual dimorphism is important for sex determination in the field of forensics. However, sexual dimorphism is commonly assessed using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) rather than three-dimensional (3D) modeling software; therefore, studies using a more accurate measurement approach are necessary. This study assessed the sexual dimorphism of the MS using a 3D modeling program to obtain information that could contribute to the fields of surgery and forensics. Methods: The CBCT data of 60 patients (age, 20~29 y; 30 males and 30 females) admitted to the Department of Orthodontics at the Dankook University School of Dentistry were provided in Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) format. The left MS and right MS were modeled based on the DICOM files using the Mimics (version 22; Materialise, Leuven, Belgium) 3D program and converted to stereolithography (STL) files used to measure the width, length, and height of the MS, infraorbital foramen (IOF), right MS, and left MS. The average of three repeated measurements was calculated, and a reliability test was performed to ensure data reliability (Cronbach's α=0.618). A canonical discriminant analysis was performed using a standard approach (left: Box's M=0.096; right: Box's M=0.115). Results: Males had greater values for all parameters (MS width, MS length, MS height, IOF, right MS, left MS) than females. The discriminant analysis identified six independent variables (MS width, MS height, MS length, IOF, right MS, left MS) that could identify sex. The left MS and right MS correctly identified the sex of 81.7% and 71.7% of the patients, respectively, with the left MS having higher accuracy. Conclusion: This study confirmed that, for Korean individuals, the left MS has a better ability to identify sex than the right MS. These results may contribute to sex identification in the fields of surgery and forensics.

  • In order to development of diagnosis system for mold transformer, partial discharge measurement technique is recommended the best effective method for the evaluation of insulation condition on high voltage winding part. However, this technique was not applied to mold transformer yet. The purpose of this paper is to describe the method of partial discharge measurement for mold transformer with coupling sensor and measuring system. As we reviewed and developed the on-line partial discharge test technique, ceramic coupling sensor, measuring system, terminal box and index parameters.

  • Biot proposed the frequency dependent formulation for the propagation of elastic waves in saturated media based on the coupled theory mixtures. Based on Biot theory, a special frequency called 'the characteristic frequency' contains unique information of the permeability of soils. The characteristic frequency is measured from I/Q (inverse quality factor) versus frequency curve by an acoustic sweep test, and the permeability of soils is computed from Biot equation. In this paper, laboratory tests are performed at The University of Mississippi using a large test box. The measured characteristic frequency is consistently obtained at 3500 Hz for mortar sands. The computed permeability of mortar sands based on Biot equation turned out 2.01 $10^{-4}m/sec$, while the permeability from the laboratory constant head test turned out 1.49 $10^{-4}m/sec$. This paper addresses the theoretical background and experimental procedure of this technique.

  • This paper presents experimental results on the behaviour and ultimate load of fifteen pipes and six roof panels made of ferrocement. Additional results from three roof panels, carried out by others, are also compared with this research results. OPC cement, natural sand and galvanised iron wire mesh were used for the construction of 20 mm thick specimens. The pipe length was 2 m and roof panel length was 2.1 m. The main variables studied were the number of wire mesh layers which were 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 layers, the inner pipe diameter which were 105, 210 and 315 mm, cross sectional shape of the panel which were channel and box sections and the depth of the edge beam which were 95 mm and 50 mm. All specimens were simply supported and tested for pure bending with test span of 600 mm at mid-span. Tests revealed that increasing the number of wire mesh layers increases the flexural strength and stiffness. Increasing the pipe diameter or depth of edge beam of the panel increases the cracking and ultimate moments. The change in the pipe diameter led to larger effect on ultimate moment than the effect of change in the number of wire mesh layers. The box section showed behaviour and strength similar to that of the channel with same depth and number of wire mesh layers.

  • A curved channel duct is designed, built and used specifically to produce Dean vortices as a result of flow around a $180^{\circ}C$ curve. We present evidence using optical reflection of the existmace of the vortices in the curved section and following flat section. Also, three different feed soludons(DI water, a monodispersed styrene-divinyl-benzene latex particle suspension and a yeast suspension) were used to determine the effectiveness of Dean instabilities to destabilize polarization layers. For each suspension, the flux data were compared as a function of time for flow conditions with and without Dean vortices, for a $0.2{\mu}m$ microfiltration membrane. Any permeation flux improvement was not sustained for $2.0De_c$ due to the vortex-decay in the flat section after the curved channel, but a 15~30% permeation improvement was obtained for $3.8De_c$.

  • In this paper, an operating characteristics of a 50 kW gird-connected photovoltaic(PV) power system was analysed from 2000 to 2004. The construction of the PV system includes a 3-phase inverter for grid connection, PV module, distribution box, and data monitoring system. The major results of the demonstration test of the 50 kW class gird-connected PV system showed that efficiency of PV system was 11.13%, and the conversion efficiency of the inverter was 92% at a 50% load.
