The viscous flow in an axisymmetric nozzle was analyzed while accounting for the mesh sizes in both in the free stream and the boundary layer. The Navier-Stokes equations were resolved using the finite volume method in order to determine the supersonic flow parameters at the exit of the converging-diverging nozzle. The numerical technique in the aforementioned method uses the flux vector splitting of Van Leer. An adequate time stepping parameter, along with the Courant, Friedrich, Lewis coefficient and mesh size level, was selected to ensure numerical convergence. The boundary layer thickness significantly affected the viscous flow parameters at the exit of the nozzle. The best solution was obtained using a very fine grid, especially near the wall at which a strong variation of velocity, temperature and shear stress was observed. This study confirmed that the boundary layer thickness can be obtained only if the size of the mesh is lower than a certain value. The nozzles are used at the exit of the shock tube in order to obtain supersonic flows for various tests. They also used in propulsion to obtain the thrust necessary to the displacement of the vehicles.

Computational work using the axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes Equations is carried out to predict the discharge coefficient of mass flow through a micro-critical nozzle. Several kinds of turbulence models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. The computed results are compared with the previous experimented ones. The present computations predict the experimental discharge coefficients with a reasonable accuracy. It is found that the standard $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$turbulence model with the standard wall function gives a best prediction of the discharge coefficients. The displacement thickness of the nozzle wall boundary layer is evaluated at the nozzle throat and is well compared to a prediction obtained by an empirical equation. The resulting displacement thickness of the wall boundary layer is about 2% to 0.6% of the diameter of the nozzle throat for the Reynolds numbers of 2000 to 20000.

Sliding mode control guarantees robustness in the presence of modeling uncertainties and external disturbances. However, this can be obtained at the cost of high control activity that may lead to chattering As one way to alleviate this problem a boundary layer around sliding surface is typically used. In this case the selection of controller gain, control ban width and boundary layer thickness is a crucial problem for the trade-off between tracking error and chattering. The parameter tuning is usually done by trail-and-error in practice causing significant effort and time. An auto tuning method based on fuzzy rules is proposed in the paper in this method tracking error and chattering are monitored by performance indices and the controller tunes the design parameters intelligently in order to compromise both indices. To demonstrate the efficiency of the propose method a mass-spring translation system and a roboic control system are simulated and tested It is shown that the proposed algorithm is effective to facilitae the parameter tuning for sliding mode controllers.

The objective of this study is theoretically to suggest the effective heat exchanger design method using boundary layer analysis. The boundary layer formation and interruption on rectangular plate and round plate fins are explained and the heat transfer coefficients showed with the variation of the velocity and temperature boundary layer. In addition, the flow pattern on one plate fin surface considered as external flow and flow pattern between fins considered as internal flow. As a result, theoretical method for the boundary layer interruption avoidance is suggested and the heat transfer coefficient of the round plate fin was higher than that of the rectangular plate fin because of the less thermal and velocity boundary layer thickness except the centerline.

In this research, the effect of bedding layer on the tensile failure mechanism of rocks has been investigated using PFC2D. For this purpose, firstly calibration of PFC2d was performed using Brazilian tensile strength. Secondly Brazilian test was performed on the bedding layer. Thickness of layers were 5 mm, 10 mm and 20 mm. in each thickness layer, layer angles changes from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ with increment of $15^{\circ}$. Totally, 21 model were simulated and tested by loading rate of 0.016 mm/s. The results show that when layer angle is less than 15, tensile cracks initiates between the layers and propagate till coalesce with model boundary. Its trace is too high. With increasing the layer angle, less layer mobilizes in failure process. Also, the failure trace is very short. It's to be noted that number of cracks decrease with increasing the layer thickness. Also, Brazilian tensile strength is minimum when bedding layer angle is between $45^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$. The maximum one is related to layer angle of $90^{\circ}$.
In this paper, the finite element method is applied to investigate the effect of the lateral boundary in homogenous soil on the seismic response of a superstructure. Some influencing factors are presented and discussed, and several parameters are identified to be important for conducting soil-structure interaction experiments on shaking tables. Numerical results show that the cross-section width L, thickness H, wave propagation velocity and lateral boundaries of soil layer have certain influences on the computational accuracy. The dimensionless parameter L/H is the most significant one among the influencing factors. In other words, a greater depth of soil layer near the foundation should be considered in shaking table tests as the thickness of the soil layer increases, which can be regarded as a linear relationship approximately. It is also found that the wave propagation velocity in soil layer affects the numerical accuracy and it is suggested to consider a greater depth of the soil layer as the wave propagation velocity increases. A numerical study on a soil-structure experimental model with a rubber ring surrounding the soil on a shaking table is also conducted. It is found the rubber ring has great effect on the soil-structure interaction experiments on shaking table. The experimental precision can be improved by reasonably choosing the elastic parameter and width of the rubber ring.
This study is concerned with the mechanism of PTCR in $BaTiO_3$ ceramics doped by $Nb^{+5}$ Since the vacancy compensation layer at the grain boundary of n-type doped $BaTiO_3$ ceramics has been known as a major factor for surface state to give PTCR phenomena the dependence of PTCR on such vacancy compensation layer was attemped to be confirmed experimentally in this study. For the experiment quenching and annealing at various temperature after sintering were adopted to induce difference in the thickness of vacancycompensation layer so as to exihibit difference of PTCReffect eachother. The TEX>$Ba^{++}$ cocentration at the grain and grain boundary was measured by EDAX to confirm the formation of the vacancy compensation layer. It was found that i)either decrease in the temperature for quenching ii) or increase in the temperature for annealing improves the PTCR effect clearly iii)increase in TEX>$Ba^{++}$ concentration at the grain boundary results in the improvement of PTCR effect. It was concluded that all the experimental results gave the evidence for the dependence of PTCR effect on the vacancy compensation layer at the grain boundary which had been induced possibly by the $Ba^{++}$ diffusion by the heat treatment conducted.

A numerical study of a two-layer, stratified flow is investigated, using the implicit finite difference method in one dimension. The results of computational method have been tested and, in case of lock exchange flow, compared with the results of experimental data. The results of model experiments with various interfacial, bottom friction coefficients along with various time weighting factor of numerical scheme and dissipative interface are shown and discussed. Two-layer model experiment has been also carried out to investigate the generation and propagation characteristics of internal tidal wave over the steep bottom topography under stratified condition. The internal wave seems to well radiate through the downstream boundary under the experiments adopting radiation conditions both at two layers and only at upper layer, confirming the applicability of radiational boundary condition in stratified flows. It is also shown that the internal wave through the downstream boundary propagates more actively with increasing thickness of lower layer in the downstream. This implies that the potential tidal energy in the interface will depend upon the thickness of lower layer for the constant thickness of upper layer.
The effects of surface roughness on a spatially-developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL) were investigated by performing direct numerical simulations of TBLs over rough and smooth walls. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness was varied in the range $Re_{\theta}=300{\sim}1400$. The roughness elements used were periodically arranged two-dimensional spanwise rods, and the roughness height was $k=1.5{\theta}_{in}$, which corresponds to $k/{\delta}=0.045{\sim}0.125$. To avoid generating a rough wall inflow, which is prohibitively difficult, a step change from smooth to rough was placed $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. The spatially-developing characteristics of the rough-wall TBL were examined. Along the streamwise direction, the friction velocity approached a constant value and a self-preserving form of the turbulent stress was obtained. Introduction of the roughness elements affected the turbulent stress not only in the roughness sublayer but also in the outer layer. Despite the roughness-induced increase of the turbulent stress in the outer layer, the roughness had only a relatively small effect on the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor in the outer layer. Inspection of the triple products of the velocity fluctuations revealed that introducing the roughness elements onto the smooth wall had a marked effect on vertical turbulent transport across the whole TBL. By contrast, good surface similarity in the outer layer was obtained for the third-order moments of the velocity fluctuations.
Direct numerical simulations are peformed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow suddenly subjected to spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces in the near-wall region. The Reynolds number based on the inlet momentum thickness and free-stream velocity is $Re_\theta=300$. A fully-implicit fractional step method is employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses are obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin-friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electro-magnetic forces. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques are used to observe the response of streamwise vortices to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are clearly affected by spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces.
