  • The influence of unsteady wake on the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a four-vane linear cascade was experimentally investigated. The unsteady wake was generated with four rotating rectangular plates located upstream of the cascade. Tested inlet Reynolds number based on chord length was set to 66,000 by controlling free-stream velocity. A hot-wire anemometer system was employed to measure turbulent velocity components. For the convective heat transfer coefficients measurement on turbine blade surface, thermochromic liquid crystal and gold film Intrex were used. It was found that the unsteady wake enhances the turbulent motion in the cascade passage and accordingly promotes the development and transition of boundary layer. It was found that the heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface increase as the plate rotating speed increases. However, the increasing of heat transfer coefficients is not significant in the case that Strouhal number is higher than 0.503.

  • In this paper, a reconfigurable flight control system is designed by applying the sliding mode control scheme. The sliding mode control method is a nonlinear control method which has been widely used because of its merits such as robustness and flexibility. In the sliding mode controller design, the signum function is usually included, but it causes the undesirable chattering problem. The chattering phenomenon can be avoided by using the saturation function instead of signum function. However, the boundary layer of the sliding surface should be carefully treated because of the use of the saturation function. In contrast to the conventional approaches, the thickness of the boundary layer of our approach does not need to be small. The reachability to the boundary layer is guaranteed by the sliding mode controller. The fault detection and isolation process is operated based on a sliding mode observer. To evaluate the reconfiguration performance, a numerical simulation using six degree-of-freedom aircraft dynamics is performed.

  • Presented are heat data which describe the effect of interaction between bulk flow pulsations and a vortex embedded in a turbulent boundary layer. The pulsation frequencies are 3 Hz, 15 Hz and 30 Hz. A half delta wing with the same height as the boundary layer thickness is used to generate the vortex flow. The convection heat transfer coefficients on a constant heat-flux surface are measured by embedded 77 T-type thermocouples. Spanwise profiles of convection heat transfer coefficients show that upwash region of vortex flow is influenced by bulk flow pulsations. The local heat transfer coefficient increases approximately by 7 percent. The increase in the local change of convection heat transfer coefficient is attributed to the spanwise oscillatory motion of vortex flow especially at the low Strouhal number and to the periodic change of vortex size.

  • An experimental study Is conducted in a four-vane linear cascade in order to examine the influence of the wake behind rectangular bars on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. Flow and heat transfer measurements are made for the inlet Reynolds number of 66000(based on chord length and free-stream velocity). Turbulent intensity and stress are measured using a hot-wire anemometer, and to measure the convective heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface liquid crystal/gold film Intrex technique is used. Each of experimental cases is characterized by the unsteadiness measured at the entrance of the cascade. The wake behind the rectangular bars enhances the turbulent motion of the flow in the cascade passage. It also promotes the boundary layer development and transition. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface increase with increasing unsteadiness.

  • This research presents the effect of anisotropy of the hollow disc mode under Brazilian test using PFC3D. The Brazilian tensile strength test was performed on the hollow disc specimens containing the bedding layers and then these specimens were numerically modeled by using the two dimensional discrete element code (PFC3D) to calibrate this computer code for the simulation of the cracks propagation and cracks coalescence in the anisotropic bedded rocks. The thickness of each layer within the specimens varied as 5 mm, 10 mm and 20 mm and the layers angles were changed as $0^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$. The diameter of internal hole was taken as 15 mm and the loading rate during the testing process kept as 0.016 mm/s. It has been shown that for layers angles below $25^{\circ}$ the tensile cracks produce in between the layers and extend toward the model boundary till interact and break the specimen. The failure process of the specimen may enhance as the layer angle increases so that the Brazilian tensile strength reaches to its minimum value when the bedding layers is between $50^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$ but its value reaches to maximum at a layer angle of $90^{\circ}$. The number of tensile cracks decreases as the layers thickness increases and with increasing the layers angle, less layer mobilize in the failure process.

  • The parametric resonance problems of axisymmetric sandwich annular plate with an electrorheological (ER) fluid core and constraining layer are investigated. The annular plate is covered an electrorheological fluid core layer and a constraining layer to improve the stability of the system. The discrete layer annular finite element and the harmonic balance method are adopted to calculate the boundary of instability regions for the sandwich annular plate system. Besides, the rheological property of an electrorheological material, such as viscosity, plasticity, and elasticity can be changed when applying an electric field. When the electric field is applied on the sandwich structure, the damping of the sandwich system is more effective. Thus, variations of the instability regions for the sandwich annular plate with different applying electric fields, thickness of ER layer, and some designed parameters are presented and discussed in this study. The ER fluid core is found to have a significant effect on the location of the boundaries of the instability regions.

  • In this article, the concept of gradient thickness is further extended to characterize the gradient behavior of the thermal and momentum boundary layer near a solid surface. The gradient thickness can replace the use of the conventional of the Nusselt and Reynolds numbers in terms of the gradient thickness provides a much easier grasp of the physical and practical meaning of the processes involved. Although there is no urgent need to discard the concept of the conventional convective heat transfer coefficient, the concept of the gradient thickness is believed to serve an efficient tool in helping students understand physics.

  • This paper characterizes hi-directionally oscillating flow in planar microdiffusers in order to evaluate the frequency-dependent flow rectification performance of the microdiffusers. In the theoretical study, we analyze a hi-directionally oscillating flow in the planar microdiffuser. In the experimental study, we fabricate two different microdiffuser prototypes, having different neck widths of 100 ㎛ (D100) and 300 ㎛(D300), respectively. The experimental net flow rates are measured as 116.6 $\mu$ι/min. and 344.4 $\mu$ι/min. for D100 and D300, respectively. The experimental flow rate of D300 decreases at the oscillating flow frequencies higher than 90Hz, at which the net boundary layer thickness is reduced to the microdiffuser neck width. It is experimentally verified that the flow rectification performance and the net flow rate of the microdiffusers tend to decrease when the boundary layer thickness is smaller than the diffuser neck width.

  • The steady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the internal flow fields characteristics according to wind tunnel contraction type. The turbulence model used in this study is a realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ modified from the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. As a results, the distribution of the axial mean velocity components along the central axis of the flow model is very similar to the ASME and BE types, and the cubic and cosine types. When the flow passes through the interior space of the analytical models, the flow resistance at the inlet of the plenum chamber is the largest at BS type contraction, but the smallest at cubic type contraction. The boundary layer thickness is the smallest in the cosine type contraction as the axial distance increases. The maximum turbulent kinetic energy in the test section is the smallest in the order of the contraction of cubic type and cosine type. Comprehensively, cubic type contraction is the best choice for wind tunnel performance, and cosine type contraction can be the next best solution.

  • In this study, the free and forced vibration analysis of micro sandwich plate with porous core layer and magneto-electric face sheets based on modified couple stress theory and first order shear deformation theory under simply supported boundary conditions is illustrated. It is noted that the core layer is composed from balsa wood and also piezo magneto-electric facesheets are made of BiTiO3-CoFe2O4. Using Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion for micro sandwich plate are obtained. Also, the Navier's method for simply support boundary condition is used to solve these equations. The effects of applied voltage, magnetic field, length to width ratio, thickness of porous to micro plate thickness ratio, type of porous, coefficient of porous on the frequency ratio are investigated. The numerical results indicate that with increasing of the porous coefficient, the non-dimensional frequency increases. Also, with an increase in the electric potential, the non-dimensional frequency decreases, while and with increasing of the magnetic potential is vice versa.
