The working fluid from the combustor to the turbine stage of a gas turbine makes various boundary layer thickness. Since the inlet boundary layer thickness is one of the important factors that affect the turbine efficiency. It is necessary to investigate secondary flow and loss with various boundary layer thickness conditions. In the present study, the effect of various inlet boundary layer thickness on secondary flow and loss and the proper height of the boundary layer fences for various boundary layer thickness were investigated. Measurements of secondary flow velocity and total pressure loss within and downstream of the passage were taken under 5 boundary layer thickness conditions, 16, 36, 52, 69, 110mm. It was found that total pressure loss and secondary flow areas were increased with increase of thickness but they were maintained almost at the same position. At the fellowing research about the boundary layer fences, 1/6, 1/3, 1/2 of each inlet boundary layer thickness and 12mm were used as the fence heights. As a result, it was observed that the proper height of the fences was generally constant since the passage vortex remained almost at the same position. Therefore once the geometry of a cascade is decided, the location of the Passage vortex and the proper fence height are appeared to be determined at the same time. When the inlet boundary layer thickness is relatively small, the loss caused by the proper fence becomes bigger than endwall loss so that it dominates secondary loss. In these cases the proper fence hight is decided not by the cascade geometry but by the inlet boundary layer thickness as previous investigations.

The effects of nitrogen on the deformation behavior of duplex stainless steel have been studied The variation of strength was correlated with the characteristic microstructures. Analysis based on Hall-Petch relation confirmed that nitrogen enhances phase-boundary strengthening effect. The evolution of dislocation structure, slip traces, and misorientation distribution during deformation were also characterized to elucidate the effect of nitrogen on inelastic deformation mechanism.
A method of estimating probability density using regression tools is presented here. It is based on equal-length binning and locally weighted approximate likelihood for bin counts. The method is particularly useful for densities with bounded supports, where it automatically corrects edge effects without using boundary kernels.
By using the 'failure' model approach, the effects of wind direction on the flight of sheathing panels from the roof of a model house in extreme winds was investigated. A complex relationship between the initial conditions, failure velocities, flight trajectories and speeds was observed. It was found that the local flow field above the roof and in the wake of the house have important effects on the flight of the panels. For example, when the initial panel location is oblique to the wind direction and in the region of separated flow near the roof edge, the panels do not fly from the roof since the resultant aerodynamic forces are small, even though the pressure coefficients at failure are high. For panels that do fly, wake effects from the building are a source of significant variation of flight trajectories and speeds. It was observed that the horizontal velocities of the panels span a range of about 20% - 95% of the roof height gust speed at failure. Numerical calculations assuming uniform, smooth flow appear to be useful for determining panel speeds; in particular, using the mean roof height, 3 sec gust speed provides a useful upper bound for determining panel speeds for the configuration examined. However, there are significant challenges for estimating trajectories using this method.
The nanofluidics is characterized by a large surface-to-volume ratio, so that the surface properties strongly affect the flow resistance. We present here the results showing that the effect of wetting properties and the surface roughness may considerably reduce the friction of fluid past the boundaries. For a simple fluid flowing over hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, the influences of surface roughness are investigated by the nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. The fluid slip at near a solid surface highly depends on the wall-fluid interaction. For hydrophobic surfaces, apparent fluid slips are observed on smooth and rough surfaces. The solid wall is modeled as a rough atomic sinusoidal wall. The effects on the boundary condition of the roughness characteristics are given by the period and amplitude of the sinusoidal wall. It was found that the slip velocity for wetting conditions at interface decreases with increasing effects of surface roughness. The results show the surface rougheness and wettability determines the slip or no-slip boundary conditions. The surface roughness geometry shows significant effects on the boundary conditions at the interface.
The characteristics of boundary layers have significant effects on the aerodynamic forces and vibration of the wind turbine blade. The incorporation of active trailing edge flaps (ATEF) into wind turbine blades has been proven as an effective control approach for alleviation of load and vibration. This paper is aimed at investigating the effects of external trailing edge flaps on the flow pattern and velocity distribution within a boundary layer of a NREL 5MW reference wind turbine, as well as designing a new type of velocity sensors for future validation measurements. An aeroelastic-aerodynamic simulation with FAST-AeroDyn code was conducted on the entire wind turbine structure and the modifications were made on turbine blade sections with ATEF. The results of aeroelastic-aerodynamic simulations were combined with the results of two-dimensional computational fluid dynamic simulations. From these, the velocity profile of the boundary layer as well as the thickness variation with time under the influence of a simplified load case was calculated for four different blade-flap combinations (without flap, with $-5^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, and $+5^{\circ}$ flap). In conjunction with the computational modeling of the characteristics of boundary layers, a bio-inspired hair flow sensor was designed for sensing the boundary flow field surrounding the turbine blades, which ultimately aims to provide real time data to design the control scheme of the flap structure. The sensor element design and performance were analyzed using both theoretical model and finite element method. A prototype sensor element with desired bio-mimicry responses was fabricated and validated, which will be further refined for integration with the turbine blade structures.

The flood water level in tidal river is determined by the joint effects of flood discharge and tidal water levels at downstream boundary. Due to the variable tidal boundary conditions, the evaluated design water levels associated with a certain flood event can be significantly different. To avoid determining of design water levels just by a certain tidal boundary condition and remove the influence of variability in boundary condition from the evaluation of design water levels, a probabilistic approach is considered in this study. This study focuses on the development of a method to evaluate the realistic design water levels in tidal river with taking into account the combined effects of river discharge and tidal level. The flood water levels are described by the joint probability of two driving forces, river discharge and tidal water levels. The developed method is applied to determine design water levels for the tidal reach of the Han River. An unsteady flow model is used to simulate the flow in the reach. To determine design water levels associated with a certain flood event, first, possible boundary conditions are obtained by sampling starting times of tidal level time series; then for each tidal boundary condition, corresponding peak water levels along the channel are computed; and finally, design water levels are determined by computing the expectations of the peak water levels. Two types of tides which are composed by different constituents are assumed (one is composed by $M_2$, and the other one is composed by $M_2$ and $M_2$) at downstream boundary, and two flood events with different maximum flood discharges are considered in this study. It is found that (a) the computed design water levels with two assumed tides have no significant difference for a certain flood event, though variability of peak water levels due to the tidal effect is considerably different; (b) tidal effect can reach to the Jamsil submerged weir and the effect is obvious in the downstream reach of the Singok submerged weir; (c) in the tidally affected reach, the variability of peak water levels due to the tidal effect is greater if the maximum flood discharge is smaller.
In the current work, static and free torsional vibration of functionally graded (FG) nanorods are investigated using Fourier sine series. The boundary conditions are described by the two elastic torsional springs at the ends. The distribution of functionally graded material is considered using a power-law rule. The systems of equations of the mechanical response of nanorods subjected to deformable boundary conditions are achieved by using the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and taking the effects of torsional springs into account. The idea of the study is to construct an eigen value problem involving the torsional spring parameters with small scale parameter and functionally graded index. This article investigates the size dependent free torsional vibration based on the MCST of functionally graded nano/micro rods with deformable boundary conditions using a Fourier sine series solution for the first time. The eigen value problem is constructed using the Stokes' transform to deformable boundary conditions and also the convergence and accuracy of the present methodology are discussed in various numerical examples. The small size coefficient influence on the free torsional vibration characteristics is studied from the point of different parameters for both deformable and rigid boundary conditions. It shows that the torsional vibrational response of functionally graded nanorods are effected by geometry, small size effects, boundary conditions and material composition. Furthermore, for all deformable boundary conditions in the event of nano-sized FG nanorods, the incrementing of the small size parameters leads to increas the torsional frequencies.
Site response analysis is an important topic in earthquake engineering. A time-domain numerical method called as one-dimensional (1D) finite element artificial boundary method is proposed to simulate the homogeneous plane elastic wave propagation in a layered half space subjected to the obliquely incident plane body wave. In this method, an exact artificial boundary condition combining the absorbing boundary condition with the inputting boundary condition is developed to model the wave absorption and input effects of the truncated half space under layer system. The spatially two-dimensional (2D) problem consisting of the layer system with the artificial boundary condition is transformed equivalently into a 1D one along the vertical direction according to Snell's law. The resulting 1D problem is solved by the finite element method with a new explicit time integration algorithm. The 1D finite element artificial boundary method is verified by analyzing two engineering sites in time domain and by comparing with the frequency-domain transfer matrix method with fast Fourier transform.
Poly-Si grain boundaries act as potential barriers as well as recombination centers for the photo-generated carriers in solar cells. Thereby, grain boundaries of poly-Si are considered as a major source of the poly-Si cell efficiency was reduced This paper investigated grain boundary effect of poly-Si wafer prior to the solar cell fabrication. By comparing I-V characteristics inner grain, on and across the grain boundary, we were able to detect grain potentials. To reduce grain boundary effect we carried out pretreatment, $POCl_3$ gettering, and examined carrier lifetime. This paper focuses on resistivity variation effect due to grain boundary of poly-Si. The resistivity of the inner grain was $2.2{\Omega}-cm$, on the grain boundary$2.3{\Omega}-cm$, across the grain boundary $2.6{\Omega}-cm$. A measured resistivity varied depending on how many grains were included inside the four point probes. The resistivity increased as the number of grain boundaries increased. Our result can contribute to achieve high conversion efficiency of poly-Si solar cell by overcoming the grain boundary influence.
