  • In the present investigation, a numerical model developed for the prediction of the wind flow over complex terrain is validated by comparing with the field experiments. For the solution of the Reynolds - Averaged Clavier- stokes equations which are the governing equations of the microscale atmospheric flow, the model is constructed based on the finite-volume formulation and the SIMPLEC pressure-correction algorithm for the hydrodynamic computation. The boundary- fitted coordinate system is employed for the detailed depiction of topography. The boundary conditions and the modified turbulence constants suitable for an atmospheric boundary- layer are applied together with the k- s turbulence model. The full- scale experiments of Cooper's Ridge, Kettles Hill and Askervein Hill are chosen as the validation cases . Comparisons of the mean flow field between the field measurements and the predicted results show good agreement. In the simulation of the wind flow over Askervein Hill , the numerical model predicts the three dimensional flow separation in the downslope of the hill including the blockage effect due to neighboring hills . Such a flow behavior has not been simulated by the theoretical predictions. Therefore, the present model may offer the most accurate prediction of flow behavior in the leeside of the hill among the existing theoretical and numerical predictions.

  • Various numerical methods for the two dimensional shallow water equations have been applied to the problems of flood routing, tidal circulation, storm surges, and atmospheric circulation. These methods are often based on the Alternating Direction Implicity(ADI) method. However, the ADI method results in inaccuracies for large time steps when dealing with a complex geometry or bathymetry. Since this method reduces the performance considerably, a fully implicit method developed by Wilders et al. (1998) is used to improve the accuracy for a large time step. Finite Difference Methods are defined on a rectangular grid. Two drawbacks of this type of grid are that grid refinement is not possibile locally and that the physical boundary is sometimes poorly represented by the numerical model boundary. Because of the second deficiency several purely numerical boundary effects can be involved. A boundary fitted curvilinear coordinate transformation is used to reduce these difficulties. It the curvilinear coordinate transformation is used to reduce these difficulties. If the coordinate transformation is orthogonal then the transformed shallow water equations are similar to the original equations. Therefore, an orthogonal coorinate transformation is used for defining coordinate system. A multigrid (MG) method is widely used to accelerate the convergence in the numerical methods. In this study, a technique using a MG method is proposed to reduce the computing time and to improve the accuracy for the orthogonal to reduce the computing time and to improve the accuracy for the orthogonal grid generation and the solutions of the shallow water equations.

  • Numerical investigation is made to study the effects of natural convection on the formation of macrosegregation of a Pb-Sn alloy solidification process in a 2-D confined rectangle mold. The governing equations are calculated using previous continuum models with SIMPLE algorithm doring the solidification process. In addition. to track the solid-liquid interface with time variations. the moving boundary condition Is adopted and irregular interface shapes are treated with Boundary-Fitted Coordinate system. As the temperature reduce from the liquidus to the solidus, the liquid concentration of Sn. the lighter constituent, increases. Then the buoyancy-driven flow due to temperature and liquid composition gradients, called thermosolutal convection or double diffusion, occurs in the mushy region and forms the complicated macrosegregation maps. Related to this phnomena, effects on the macrosegregation formation depending on the cooling condition and gravity values are described.

  • Complex flow field around the Darius turbine rotating stationally are simulated by solving the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation numerically. The rotating coordinate system is employed so that the boundary conditions on the blades of the rotor become simple. In order to impose the boundary condition on the blades precisely, the boundary fitted coordinate system is employed. Fractional step method is used to solve the basic equations. The complex flow fields due to the three dimensionality of the geometry of the turbine and the rotation of the turbine are obtained and they are visualized effectively by using the technique of the computer graphics.

  • The weld pool convection problem that occurs during the stationary GTA welding has been studied, considering the four driving forces for weld pool convection, i.e., the electromagnetic force, the buoyancy force, the aerodynamic drag force, and the surface tension force at the weld pool surface. In the numerical simulation, the difficulties associated with the irregular moving liquid-solid interface have been successfully overcome by adopting a Boundary-Fitted Coordinate system. In the experiments to show the validity of the numerical analysis, a deep periphery and shallow centerpentrated weld pool shape was observed from the etched specimen. It could be revealed that this type of weld pool shape could be simulated, only when some of aerodynamic drag force distributions are considered. Although slight disagreement arose, the calculated and the observed weld pool shapes were in a reasonable agreement.

  • A fundamental understanding of the flow around the wind turbine is important to investigate the performance of new type of wind turbine. This study presents the simulation of three dimensional flow fields around the Darius wind turbine as an example. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are used for this simulation. The rotating coordinate system that rotates in the same speed of the turbine is used in order to simplify the boundary condition on the blades. Additionally, the boundary fitted coordinate system is employed in order to express the shape of the blades precisely. Fractional step method is used to solve the basic equations. Third order upwind scheme is chosen for the approximation of the non-linear terms since it can compute the flow field stably even at high Reynolds number without any turbulence models. The flow fields obtained in this study are highly complex due to the three dimensionality and are visualized effectively by using the technique of the computer graphics.

  • Two and three-dimensional flows around a cross-flow wind turbine are investigated by the numerical simulation. The turbine studied in this paper has cylindrical shape with many small blades along its periphery. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equation is used for this simulation. A rotating coordinate system, which rotates at the same speed of the turbine, is used in order to simplify the boundary conditions on the blades of the turbine. Additionally, a boundary fitted coordinate system is employed in order to express the shape of the blades precisely. A third order upwind scheme is chosen for the approximation of the non-linear terms. When the number of blades is about 10, the highest torque is obtained.

  • Steady-state natural convection heat transfer characteristics from cylinders in a multiply-connected bounded region are clarified. A spectral finite difference scheme (spectral decomposition of the system of partial differential equations, semi-implicit time integration) is applied in numerical analysis, with a boundary-fitted conformal coordinate system through a Jacobian elliptic function with a successive transformation to formulate a system of governing equations in terms of a stream function, vorticity and temperature. Multiplicity of the domain is expressed explicitly.

  • Melting process inside in a vertical cylinder has been investigated numerically to observe heat transfer characteristics in the latent heat storage vessel applied to the thermal storage system. The time-dependent boundary fitted coordinate system was introduced to overcome the difficulty caused by the moving boundary. The present results are in good agreement with the available previous data when the initial subcooling effect of the solid phase is not considered. It is found that the melting is promoted by the natural convection, but is delayed by the initial subcooling effect of the solid phase.
