Background: For treatment of pneumothorax in Korea, many institutions hospitalize the patient after chest tube insertion. In this study, a portable small-bore chest tube (Thoracic Egg; Sumitomo Bakelite Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) was used for pneumothorax management in an outpatient clinic. Methods: Between August 2014 and March 2015, 56 pneumothorax patients were treated using the Thoracic Egg. Results: After Thoracic Egg insertion, 44 patients (78.6%) were discharged from the emergency room for follow-up in the outpatient clinic, and 12 patients (21.4%) were hospitalized. The mean duration of Thoracic Egg chest tube placement was 4.8 days, and the success rate was 73%; 20% of patients showed incomplete expansion and underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. For primary spontaneous pneumothorax patients, the success rate of the Thoracic Egg was 76.6% and for iatrogenic pneumothorax, it was 100%. There were 2 complications using the Thoracic Egg. Conclusion: Outpatient treatment of pneumothorax using the Thoracic Egg could be a good treatment option for primary spontaneous and iatrogenic pneumothorax.

This study was performed to identify the maternal risk factors for the low birth weight. During the period from February to June in 1991, the medical record review and questionnaire interview were conducted upon the 465 pregnant women who were admitted to and delivered a baby in 3 general hospitals and an obstetric hospital in Kwangju area. The health and other related information from women who bore the low birth weight infant was compared with those from women who bore the normal birth weight infant. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Maternal age, low body weight at term, illegitimate birth, and maintaining work activity during pregnancy were positively associated with low birth weight. 2. The positive association was revealed between low birth weight and the previous abortion, short gestational weeks, anemia, low maternal weight gain during pregnancy, the obstetric present illness and hypertension. 3. Some maternal working conditions were associated with low birth weight although statistically not significant. 4. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, gestational weeks and maternal weight gain during pregnancy were related with low birth weight.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the factors influencing glass particle contamination in single dose glass ampules upon opening. Method: The study was single case experimental design. Different methods of opening ampule (hand, wooden stick), different sizes of ampules(1cc, 2cc) and different sizes of needles(17gauge, 23gauge, $5{\mu}m$ filter) were evaluated. Eighteen ampules were randomly assigned in each group. The number of glass ampule particles ${\ge}10{\mu}m$ was counted by microscope. Results: There was no significant difference in the number of particles aspirated by opening methods. But number of glass particles was much lower when using 1cc ampules rather than 2cc ampules and was also much lower when using smaller size needles and needles which include a $5{\mu}m$ filter rather than larger size of needles. Conclusion: We suggest that larger bore or unfiltered needles increase the risk of aspirating more glass particles than smaller bore or filter needles. In addition, these data show that a wooden stick can be used as a method opening glass ampules.

In this paper, we propose an aircraft on-glass antenna for FM radio reception. To obtain broad matching bandwidth, we employed a multiple loop as the basic antenna structure, and the shape of the loops mimics the frame of a window in order to ensure pilots' field of view as large as possible. The detailed design parameters of the multi-loop structure were determined using a Pareto genetic algorithm with a full wave EM simulation tool. The optimized on-glass antenna was built and installed on a Korean utility helicopter (KUH) The measurement results showed a half power matching bandwidth of about 63.3 %, average vertical bore-sight gain of about -12.98 dBi in the FM band.

This research developed a new deep-bore, cup-shape, large forging process by combining die forging and free forging methods. In the proposed process, a preform for cup-shape large forging is produced by die forging, and a product with a deep bore is finally manufactured using an open die forging method, which is generally produced using a backward extrusion process. Finite element analysis results showed a higher effective strain distribution with a smaller forging load using the proposed method compared to the backward extrusion method. The production of a prototype with good internal quality using a small press capacity verified the proposed method.

Stress of a steam separator, equipment of the high-pressure (HP) evaporator for a HRSG, was analyzed and evaluated according to ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 2. First, from the analysis results of the piping system model of the HP evaporator, reaction forces of the riser tubes connected to the steam separator, i.e., nozzle loads, were derived. Next, a finite element model of the steam separator was constructed and analyzed for the design pressure and the nozzle loads. The results show that the maximum stress occurred at the bore of the riser nozzle. The primary membrane stresses at the shell and nozzle were found to be less than the allowable stress. Next, the steam separator was analyzed for the steady-state operating conditions of operating pressure, operating temperature, and nozzle loads. The maximum stress occurred at the bore of the riser nozzle. The primary plus secondary membrane plus bending stress at the shell and nozzle was found to be less than the allowable stress.

It is known that ball bearings mounted in housing or on shaft are playing a key role to keep it running smoothly. The roundness of a housing bore on which bearing outer ring is mounted with interference has directly affected the running accuracy of bearing. The running accuracy of bearing, therefore, can extend the significant influence to the rotating machinery as well. In this paper, bearing's vibration and fatigue life considering raceway roundness of ball bearing before and after mounted in housing bore are theoretically estimated. To perform analysis, a simple three degrees of freedom model was proposed and then Newton-Raphson iterative method was introduced to be utilized in the analysis. The results show that the vibration magnitude of ball bearing fitted into housing unit is appeared considerably larger than the one of its pre-assembling. And theoretical $L_{10}$ life which ninety percent of the bearing population will endure decreased in about fifty percent.

Main bearing cap is one of the essential structural elements in internal combustion engine. Main bearing cap guides and holds the crankshaft, withstanding the full combustion and inertia loads of the engine. A seamless design methodology using FEA has been proposed to produce a reliable design of main bearing cap. A Levy's thick cylinder model was applied to calculate the contact pressure between bearing shell and housing bore. A calculated contact pressure at housing bore is within the allowed limit comparing with that from bearing shell model. An adequate FEA model was suggested to obtain reliable solutions for the durability of main bearing cap. 3D global model consists of engine bulkhead, main bearing cap, and bolts. Sub-model consisting of cap and part of bolts is used to get detailed solution of main bearing cap. A very careful contact modeling practice is needed to resolve the convergence problems frequently encountering during combined geometric and material non-linear problems. A proposed methodology has been applied to the main bearing cap model successfully and obtained reliable stress results and fatigue safety factors.
The research results on the superconducting magnet for whole body MRI are presented. The magnet consists of main coil with 6 solenoid coils, shielding coil with 2 solenoid coils and 6 sets of cryogenic shim coil. The ferromagnetic shim assembly is installed on the inside wall of the room temperature bore for shimming inhomogeneous field components generated due to manufacturing tolerances, installation misalignments and external ferromagnetic materials near the magnet. Also, the magnet is enclosed with the horizontal type cryostat with 80cm room temperature bore to keep the magnet under the operating temperature. The magnetic field distributions within the imaging volume were measured by the NMR field mapping system. Through the test, the central field of magnet was 1.5 Tesla and the field homogeneity of 9.3 ppm has been obtained on 40cm DSV(the diameter of spherical volume) and using this magnet, comparatively good images for human body, fruits and water phantoms have been achieved.
The design and construction of a 13 Tesla / 46 mm bore superconducting magnet is presented. The system consists of an 5 Tesla outer NbTi coil with a bore I.D. of 144m, a winding O. D. of 208mm and the length of 200mm which is connected in series with a 200mm long insert coil constructed of multi filamentary $Nb_3Sn$. The insert coil was reacted after winding. Also, epoxy impregnation is accomplished at $Nb_3Sn$ coil using a low viscosity crack resistant epoxy which is forced into the coil with a series of vacuum and over atmosphere pressure cycle.
