  • The interfacial adhesion strengths between screen-printed Ag film and epoxy resin-coated polyimide were evaluated by $180^{\circ}$ peel test method. Measured peel strength value was initially around $164.0{\pm}24.4J/m^2$, while the heat treatment during 24h at $120^{\circ}C$ increase peel strength up to $220.8{\pm}19.2J/m^2$. $85^{\circ}C/85%$ RH temperature/humidity treatment decrease peel strength to $84.1{\pm}50.8J/m^2$, which seems to be attributed to hydrolysis bonding reaction mechanism between metal and adhesive epoxy resin coating layer.

  • Statement of problem: The adhesion between titanium and ceramic is less optimal than conventional metal-ceramic bonding, due to reaction layer form on cast titanium surface during porcelain firing. Purpose: This study characterized the effect of titanium-ceramic adhesion after gold and TiN coating on cast and wrought titanium substrates. Material and method: Six groups of ASTM grade II commercially pure titanium and cast titanium specimens$(13mm{\times}13mm{\times}1mm)$ were prepared(n=8). The conventional Au-Pd-In alloy served as the control. All specimens were sandblasted with $110{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ particles and ultrasonically cleaned for 5min in deionized water and dried in air before porcelain firing. An ultra-low-fusing dental porcelain (Vita Titankeramik) was fused on titanium surfaces. Porcelain was debonded by a biaxial flexure test at a cross head speed of 0.25mm/min. The excellent titanium-ceramic adherence was exhibited by the presence of a dentin porcelain layer on the specimen surface after the biaxial flexure test. Area fraction of adherent porcelain (AFAP) was determined by SEM/EDS. Numerical results were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls test at ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: The AFAP value of cast titanium was greatest in the group 2 with TiN coating, followed by group 1 with Au coating and the group 3 with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting. Significant statistical difference was found between the group 1, 2 and the group 3 (p<.05). The AFAP value of wrought titanium was greatest in the group 5 with TiN coating, followed by the group 4 with Au coating and the group 6 with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting. Conclusion: No significant difference was observed among the three groups (p>.05). The AFAP values of the cast titanium and the wrought titanium were similar. However the group treated with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting showed significantly lower value (p<.05).

  • Interfacial fracture energy(${\Gamma}$) between $Al_2O_3$ thin film deposited by Atomic Layer Deposition(ALD) and sputter deposited Cu electrode for embedded PCB applications is measured from a $90^{\circ}$ peel test. While the interfacial fracture energy of $Cu/Al_2O_3$ is very poor, Cr adhesion layer increases the interfacial fracture energy to $39.8{\pm}3.2g/mm\;for\;Ar^+$ RF plasma power density of $0.123W/cm^2$, which seems to come from the enhancement of the mechanical interlocking and Cr-O chemical bonding effects.

  • A new Fe-Cr-Mo-B-C amorphous alloy is designed, which offers high mechanical strength, corrosion resistance as well as high glass-forming ability and its gas-atomized amorphous powder is deposited on an ASTM A213-T91 steel substrate using the high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) process. The hybrid coating layer, consisting of nanocrystalline and amorphous phases, exhibits strong bonding features with the substrate, without revealing significant pore formation. By the coating process, it is possible to obtain a dense structure in which pores are hardly observed not only inside the coating layer but also at the interface between the coating layer and the substrate. The coating layer exhibits good adhesive strength as well as good wear resistance, making it suitable for coating layers for biomass applications.

  • The quantitative interfacial adhesion energy measurement method of copper redistribution layer and WPR dielectric interface were investigated using $90^{\circ}$ peel test, 4-point bending test, double cantilever beam (DCB) measurement for FOWLP Applications. Measured interfacial adhesion energy values of all three methods were higher than $5J/m^2$, which is considered as a minimum criterion for reliable Cu/low-k integration with CMP processes without delamination. Measured energy values increase with increasing phase angle, that is, in order of DCB, 4-point bending test, and $90^{\circ}$ peel test due to increasing roughness-related shielding and plastic energy dissipation effects, which match well interfacial fracture mechanics theory. Considering adhesion specimen preparation process, phase angle, measurement accuracy and bonding energy levels, both DCB and 4-point bending test methods are recommended for quantitative adhesion energy measurement of RDL interface depending on the real application situations.

  • PURPOSE. Numerous methods were used to etch the fiber posts to improve its bonding to root canal dentin. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of 37% phosphoric acid in etching fiber posts in comparison with 24% hydrogen peroxide. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety human maxillary central incisors were taken and post space preparation was done. Ninety fiber posts were taken and divided into three groups (n=30) based on the surface treatment they received ($H_3PO_4$, $H_2O_2$, distilled water) and each group was further divided (n=10) based on the time period of application (15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds). All the posts were luted into canals using Rely X UniCem-2. Each tooth was then sectioned into six slices and subjected to push out test. Data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis at P<.05. The surface topography was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS. Highest bond strength values were noted in 15 seconds etched phosphoric acid group and 60 seconds etched hydrogen peroxide group with no significant difference between two groups. Surface topography revealed complete epoxy layer removal with no damage to its structural integrity in those groups. CONCLUSION. $H_3PO_4$ etching for a period of 15 seconds is an effective alternative in improving the adhesion of fiber post to root dentin.

  • The W thin films were deposited on Si3N4 by a PECVD technique. The effects of substrate temperature and gas flow ratio on the properties of the W films were investigated. The deposition of W films were limited by surface reaction at the temperature range of 150>~$250^{\circ}C$, W films had the deposition rate of 150~530 $\AA$/min and stress of 0.85~$14.35\times10 ^9 \textrm {dynes/cm}^2}$ at various substrate temperatures and $SiH_4/WF_6$ flow ratios. $SiH_4/WF_6$ flow ratio affected the deposition rate and stress of the W films, expecially, excessive flow of SiH4 abruptly changed the structure, chemical bonding, and stress of the W films. Among the deposited W films on TiN, Ti, Mo, NiCr and Al adhesion layer, the one on the Al had the best adhesion property.

  • Galvannealed(GA) steels are now generally used in car body manufacturing for corrosion resistance. In this study, the weldability and joint mechanical behavior of a newly developed 1.2GPa grade GA ultra high strength TRIP(transformation induced plasticity) steel was investigated for three joining processes, such as adhesive bonding, resistance spot welding and weldbonding. Under both shear and peel stress conditions, the failure mode of the adhesive joints were the mixture of the adhesive cohesive failure, adhesive interface failure and coating layer failure. It means that the adhesion strength of GA coating onto the base metal was similar to that of adhesive bonding onto the GA coating. Under the shear stress condition, the weldbonding exerted to expand the optimal spot welding condition of 1.2GPa GA TRIP steel because the strength of adhesive bond overwhelmed that of the resistance spot weld. Under the peel stress condition, the weldbonding also exerted to expand the optimal spot welding condition of 1.2GPa GA TRIP steel by inducing the tear fracture mode rather than the partial plug fracture mode.

  • Increasing demands for esthetic dental treatment, zirconia, which has high mechanical and esthetic properties, had been applied more and more in clinics. Therefore, assessment of biocompatibility of zirconia is necessary. In this article, a review of in vivo studies of zirconia compatibility was performed. In vivo studies showed zirconia had great biocompatibility both on soft and hard tissue. Studies with various animals and patients reported high biocompatibility of zirconia. In terms of bone synthesis and bone adhesion, zirconia showed similar biocompatible properties to titanium. On the other hand, zirconia could be used as implant. For using as an implant, various methods of Hydroxyapatite (HA) coating had been suggested. Since HA coating on titanium implant showed some problems such as low bonding strength and degeneration of HA, HA-zirconia composite, HA-coated zirconia, and HA-zirconia functionally graded material (FGM) or intermediate layer of alumina had been proposed. These methods showed higher bonding strength and biocompatibility.

  • In this study, the silica-based hybrid material with high barrier property was prepared by incorporating ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer, which has been utilized as packaging materials due to its superior gas permeation resistance, during sol-gel process. In preparation of this EVOH/$SiO_2$ hybrid coating materials, the (3-glycidoxy-propyl)-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) as a silane coupling agent was employed to promote interfacial adhesion between organic and inorganic phases. As confirmed from FT-IR analysis, the physical interaction between two phases was improved due to the increased hydrogen bonding, resulting in homogeneous microstructure with dispersion of nano-sized silica particles. However, depending on the range of content of added silane coupling agent (GPTMS), micro-phase separated microstructure in the hybrid could be observed due to insufficient interfacial attraction or possibility of polymerization reaction of epoxide ring in GPTMS. The oxygen barrier property of the mono-layer coated BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) film was examined for the hybrids containing various GPTMS contents. Consequently, it is revealed that GPTMS should be used in an optimum level of content to produce the high barrier EVOH/$SiO_2$ hybrid material with an improved optical transparency and homogeneous phase morphology.
