  • When the shear deformation occurs on the slope reinforced with soil nail, a passive earth pressure is induced on the ground around the soil nail and the increase of shear deformation causes the earth pressure variation of the ground and the deformation and member force change of the soil nail. In this study, the shear behavior of the soil nail was analyzed experimentally by inducing the shear deformation in the vertical direction of the soil nail using a large-scale direct shear test equipment and it was verified through numerical analysis. The shear test was performed on the bonded length (6D, 8D, 10D and 12D) of the soil nail separated from the shear surface. As a result, it was observed that the continuous increase of the shear deformation caused the damage of the grout and the effect according to the bonded length was analyzed. Through the model test and the numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the transfer length of the soil nail was 0.2~0.22m, which is larger than 0.1m suggested in the previous study, and the shear zone was in the range of 0.6m from the shear surface.

  • In this study, the strength of magnesium-GFRP/epoxy single-lap bonded joints are experimentally evaluated with different end shapes. In order to achieve this, four different single-lap joints with different end shapes are fabricated and the failure load is measured under tensile loading tests. From the test results, the single-lap joint with a square end exhibits the lowest failure load while the single-lap joint with reverse tapering and a spew fillet has the highest stress values. It has 11.1% higher failure strength than the single-lap joint with a square end.

  • The surface of hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) fibers (spun-bonded fabric) was treated by an atmospheric plasma treatment method. These pre-treated hydrophilic PP fabrics were dip-coated in the aqueous poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) solution. PVP layers on the surface of PP fiber were crosslinked by an irradiation of electron beam. The thickness of PVP hydrogels coated on the surface was easily controlled by changing the concentration of PVP in coating solution. The stepwise surface treatment, PVP coating, and hydrogel formation via electron beam irradiation were analyzed by the measurement of contact angle, scanning electron microscopy, and optical microscopy.

  • This paper describes the design, fabrication and characteristics of a piezoelectric valve using MCA(Multilayer ceramic actuator). The MCA valve, which has the buckling effect, consists of three separate structures; MCA, a valve actuator die and an a seat die. The design of the actuator die was done by FEM modeling and displacement measurement, respectively. The valve seat die with 6 trenches was made, and the actuator die, which is driven to MCA under optimized conditions, was also fabricated. After Si-wafer direct bonding between the seat die and the actuator die, MCA was also anodic bonded to the seat/actuator die structure. PDMS sealing pad was fabricated to minimize a leak-rate. It was also bonded to seat die and SUS package. The MCA valve shows a flow rate of 9.13 sccm at a supplied voltage of 100 V with a 50 % duty cycle, maximum non-linearity was 2.24 % FS and leak rate was $3.03{\times}10^{-8}\;pa{\cdot}m^3/cm^2$. Therefore, the fabricated MCA valve is suitable for a variety of flow control equipment, a medical bio-system, automobile and air transportation industry.

  • There is a growing need for the development and implementation of new methods for the rapid and cost-effective rehabilitation of deteriorating steel structural components to offset the drawbacks related to welding and/or bolting in the field. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites provide a potential alternative as externally bonded patches for strengthening and repair of metallic structural members for building and bridge systems. This paper describes results of an investigation of tensile and fatigue response of steel/CFRP joints simulating scenarios of strengthening and crack-patching. It is shown that appropriately designed schemes, even when fabricated with levels of inaccuracy as could be expected in the field, can provide significant strain relief and load transfer capability. A simplified elasto-plastic closed form solution for stress analysis is presented, and validated experimentally. It is shown that the bond development length remains constant in the linear range, whereas it increases as the adhesive is deformed plastically. Fatigue resistance is shown to be at least comparable with the requirements for welded cover plates without attendant decreases in stiffness and strength.

  • The transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding was used to fabricate autogenous joints in a magnesium alloy AZ31 with the aid of a pure Ni interlayer. A $13{\mu}m$ thick pure Ni foil was used in order to form a Mg-Ni eutectic liquid at the joint interface. The interface of reaction and composition profiles were investigated as a function of bonding time using a pressure of 0.16 MPa and a bonding temperature of $515^{\circ}C$. The quality of the joints produced was examined by metallurgical characterization and the joint microstructure developed across the diffusion bonds was related to changes in mechanical properties as a function of the bonding time.

  • The purpose of this study is to define the shear reinforcing effect of Near-Surface-Mounted (NSM) FRP strips in reinforced concrete (RC) member through a test. Three T shaped RC beams were made and two of them were strengthened with NSM FRP strips for increase shear strength. And those were tested to find the shear strengthening effect. In the test, two case of shear strengthening methods were considered such as 1) with NSM FRP strips having full embedded length and 2) with NSM FRP strips having some what short embedded length and additional externally bonded FRP sheet. As a result, the shear strengthening effect could be obtained when the NSM FRP strips are embedded to have full length up to the bottom of slab. However the shear strength was not increased in the case of having somewhat short embedded length of NSM FRP strips even additional EB sheet was enhanced.

  • When deformation occurs on slope reinforced with anchor, shear stress and bending stress are applied on the shear surface along the slip surface and increase of the shear deformation causes the tension force variation of the anchor. In this study, shear test was performed by measuring the tension force of the anchor by inducing shear deformation in vertical direction of the anchor using a large-scale direct shear test equipment in order to confirm the tension force variation of the anchor induced by shear deformation. The shear test was performed for 8 conditions which were classified according to the anchor reinforcement, separation distance (1D, 2D, 4D) from the shear surface to bonded part and the lateral-pressure condition (0.1 MPa, 0.2 MPa) of adjacent ground. As a result of the shear test, it was found that the separation distance and the lateral-pressure condition affect the shear force of the ground reinforced by anchor and the tension force of the anchor, and experimentally verified that the shear force variation is related to axial force variation of the anchor head and tip. Therefore, it was confirmed that the behavior of the bonded part induced by the shear deformation can be indirectly predicted by analyzing the tendency of the tension force variation of the anchor head.

  • Natural gas hydrates are ice-like solid substances, which are composed of water and natural gas, mainly methane. They have three kinds of crystal structures of five polyhedra formed by hydrogen-bonded water molecules, and are stable at high pressures and low temperatures. They contain large amounts of organic carbon and widely occur in deep oceans and permafrost regions. Therefore, they are expected as a potential energy resource in the future. Especially, $1m^3$ natural gas hydrate contains up to $172Nm^3$ of methane gas, de pending on the pressure and temperature of production. Such large volumes make natural gas hydrates can be used to store and transport natural gas. In this study, three-phase equilibrium conditions for forming natural gas hydrate were numerically obtained in pure water and single electrolyte solution containing 3 wt% NaCl. The results show that the predictions match the previous experimental values very well, and it was found that NaCl acts as an inhibitor. Also, help gases such that ethane, propane, i-butane, and n-butane reduce the hydrate formation pressure at the same temperature.
