In pretensioned concrete structures, bond between prestressing steel and concrete is an essential component to ensure the integrity of a pretensioned member. The anchorage and development of the prestressing force depend exclusively on bond. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of bond and development length between pretensioned steel and concrete. To resolve the controversy over the adequacy of the current code provision on development length of prestressing strands, a comprehensive test program has been scheduled and twenty four rectangular prestressed concrete beams have been tested to determine development length. Major test variables include diameter of strands (12.7mm, 15.2mm) and concrete covers (3cm, 4cm, 5cm). The test results indicate that the development length based on the bond stress-slip relation. The proposed model can evaluate realistically the development length of pretensioned prestressed concrete members and can be the good basis for the future basis of code equations on development length of PSC members.
By bond mechanism between the prestressing strand and the concrete surrounding it, the effective force of prestressing must be transferred to the concrete entirely. The distance required to transfer the effective force of prestressing is called the transfer length, and the development length is the bond length required to anchor the strand as it resists external loads on the member. Transfer length was determined from the concrete strain profile at the level of the strands at transfer and development length was determined from various external loading lengths and compared with current code equation. Through the test results, bond failure is predicted based on the distress caused by cracks when they propagate within the transfer zone of prestressing strand. The current code equation was found to be conservative in comparison with the measured value.

Pretensioned concrete (PC) is widely used in contemporary construction. Bond of prestressing strand is significant for composite-action between the strand and concrete in the transfer and flexural-bond zones of PC members. This study develops a new methodology for quantifying the bond of 18-mm prestressing strand in PC members based on results of a pullout test, the Standard Test for Strand Bond (STSB). The experimental program includes: (a) twenty-four pretensioned concrete beams, using a wide range of concrete compressive strength; and (b) twelve untensioned pullout specimens. By testing beams, the transfer length, flexural-bond length, and development length were all measured. In the STSB, the pullout forces for the strands were measured. Experimental results indicate a significant relationship between the bond of prestressing strand to the code-established design parameters, such as transfer length and development length. However, the code-predictions can be unconservative for the prestressing strands having a low STSB pullout force. Three simplified bond equations are proposed for the design applications of PC members.

This paper investigates bond behavior of structural lightweight concrete (SLWC) and ordinary concrete (OC) comparatively using bending test called Standard Belgium Hinged Beam Test (SBHBT). For this purpose the experiments were carried out as three series on 36 beam specimens (12 specimens of SLWC and OC with $20{\phi}$ development length, 12 specimens of SLWC with $25{\phi}$ development length). For each series bond behavior of steel rebars with 8, 10, 12, 14 mm diameters were tested. The results indicate that bond strength of SLWC is considerable lower than OC and $20{\phi}$ development length is insufficient for steel rebars with 12 mm and 14 mm diameters. Therefore development length of SLWC was extended to $25{\phi}$, even if 8 and 10 mm steel rebars provided acceptable bond strength. In this way, bond strength between SLWC and 8 and 10 mm steel rebars was developed. In addition, adequate bond behavior was achieved for 12 mm rebar but the beam in which 14 mm rebar used exceeded their bearing capacity by shear forces before yield stress. This result shows that SBHBT is more convenient for small sized steel rebars.
The extensive usage of pretensioned prestressed concrete component in modem construe- tion as structural members mandates precise understanding of its mechanism. Especially, an adequate transfer of prestressing force from steel tendons to concrete around the end regions of the member is a critical issue. Due to the importance of the topic, several investigators have formulated equations modeling the transfer bond length based on various bonding mechanism between steel and concrete. However, the existing models are still inadequate in predicting the bond development in pretensioned prestressed concrete members. Therefore, this study presents a model of transfer bond length based on rational theory that can simulate experimental results. The model is developed into solid mechanics based structural analysis computer program. The program is validated by comparing the analysis results with experimental results of bond stress distribution, concrete strain profiles, and transfer length in pretensioned prestressed concrete members. The proposed analytical procedure in this study can be utilized as a useful tool for realistic evaluation of transfer length in pretensioned prestressed concrete members.
The main objective of this project is to define the ultimate bond performance of domestic prestressing strands in the precast prestensioned concrete beams. Eight specimens from four different companies were fabricated and tested in this study. Four-point loading tests were performed on the beams of domestic strands with an arbitrary anchorage length. The research has shown, that all seven specimens except one failed in bond are capable of developing their full flexural capacity and the strands within them are fully anchored even with the sudden transfer of frame cutting. Following results are summarized from the tests conducted. 1) All of the specimens are tested at an embedment lengths much shorter than those required by the ACI code, failed in flexure except one failed in bond. 2) It seems that the beam depth can not be an effective variable to estimate the bond length within these sections and length of specimens on this tests. 3) The development length with the stirrup space which are considered for correction factors in the equations of Russel and Paulsgrove, is fully accurate to determine the required length for the beam tested in this research.

Non-destructive tests are commonly used in construction industry to access the quality and strength of concrete. However, till date there is no non-destructive testing method that can be adopted to evaluate the bond condition of reinforced concrete beams. In this regard, the presented research work details the use of ultra-sonic pulse velocity test method to evaluate the bond condition of reinforced concrete beam. A detailed experimental research was conducted by testing four identical reinforced concrete beam samples. The samples were loaded in equal increments till failure and ultra-sonic pulse velocity readings were recorded along the length of the beam element. It was observed from experimentation that as the cracks developed in the sample, the ultra-sonic wave velocity reduced for the same path length. This reduction in wave velocity was used to identify the initiation, development and propagation of internal micro-cracks along the length of reinforcement. Using the developed experimental methodology, researchers were able to identify weak spots in bond along the length of the specimen. The proposed method can be adopted by engineers to access the quality of bond for steel reinforcement in beam members. This allows engineers to carryout localized repairs thereby resulting in reduction of time, cost and labor needed for strengthening. Furthermore, the methodology to apply the proposed technique in real-world along with various challenges associated with its application have also been highlighted.
The nature of bond of untensioned prestressed strand in concrete differs from that of plain or deformed reinforcing bar as well as tensioned prestressed strand. There is a very limited amount of published research information regarding bonding of this type reinforcing. In order to use and design untensioned strand as reinforcing, relationships defining the load transfer characteristics of the strand are necessary. A program based upon pullout tests was designed to develop data relating the critical parameters for determining load transfer behavior of the untensioned strand. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of bond and development length between untensioned strand and concrete. The test variables include diameter of strands (9.3mm, 12.7mm) and development lengths. The maximum bond stress at the 9.3mm and 12.7mm strands decreases with the increase of the rate of development length. The untensioned prestressed strands displayed bond performance when secure development length more than 80$\%$ according to the development of deformed bars equation.
Confinement is one of the major concepts for bond of reinforcing steel to concrete. Cover distance, and lateral reinforcement are the key factors for current provisions for development and splices of reinforcement. However, the current provisions still being complicated to calculate major variables need to be developed in the process of design. In this study, an experimental work was performed to examine the behavior of bond using beam end specimens. The test results and previous available data are analyzed to isolate the effects of confinement on bond strength. From this reevaluation, new provisions for development and splice of reinforcement are proposed. The provisions also propose some limits for confinement index. The new provisions will help engineers to decide easily the simple but conservative way for manual calculations or the exact approach for computerized design.
