Many materials including cementitious concrete-type materials undergo material property changes during high-rate loading. There is a wealth of research regarding this phenomenon for concrete in compression and tension. However, there is minimal knowledge about how mortar material used in concrete masonry unit (CMU) construction behaves in high-rate shear loading. A series of experiments was conducted to examine the bond strength of mortar bonded to CMU units under high-rate shear loading. A novel experimental setup using a shock tube and dynamic ram were used to load specially constructed shear triplets in a double lap shear configuration with no pre-compression. The Finite Element Method was leveraged in conjunction with data from the experimental investigation to establish if the shear bond between concrete masonry units and mortar exhibits any rate dependency. An increase in shear bond strength was observed when loaded at a high strain rate. This data indicates that the CMU-mortar bond exhibits a rate dependent strength change and illustrates the need for further study of the CMU-mortar interface characteristics at high strain rates.
PURPOSES: In Korea, rapid maintenance of distressed concrete pavement is required to prevent traffic jam of the highway. Asphalt concrete overlay has been used as a general maintenance method of construction for aged concrete pavement. AC overlay on existing concrete pavements experience various early distresses such as reflection crack, pothole and rutting, due to different physical characteristics between asphalt overlay and existing concrete pavement. Bonded concrete overlay(BCO) is a good alternative since it has advantages that can reduce various distresses during the service life since overlay material has similar properties with existing concrete pavements. Recently, BCO which uses the ultra rapid harding cement has been applied for maintenance of highway. BCO has advantage of structural performance since it does monolithic behave with existing pavement. Therefore, it is important to have a suitable bond strength criteria for securing performance of BCO. Bond strength criteria should be larger than normal tensile stress and horizontal shear stress occurred by traffic and environmental loading at bond interface. Normal tensile stress and horizontal shear stress need to estimated for the establishment of practical bond strength criteria. METHODS: This study aimed to estimate the bond stresses at the interface of BCO using the three dimensional finite element analysis. RESULTS: As a result of this study, major failure mode and maximum bond stress are evaluated through the analysis of normal tensile stress and horizontal shear stress for various traffic and environmental load conditions. CONCLUSIONS: It was known that normal tensile stresses are dominated by environmental loading, and, horizontal shear stresses are dominated by traffic loading. In addition, bond failure occurred by both of normal tensile stresses and horizontal shear stresses; however, normal tensile stresses are predominated over horizontal shear stresses.
PURPOSE. Polyamide polymers do not provide sufficient bond strength to auto-polymerized resins for repairing fractured denture or replacing dislodged denture teeth. Limited treatment methods have been developed to improve the bond strength between auto-polymerized reline resins and polyamide denture base materials. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of surface modification by acetic acid on surface characteristics and bond strength of reline resin to polyamide denture base. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 84 polyamide specimens were divided into three surface treatment groups (n=28): control (N), silica-coated (S), and acid-treated (A). Two different auto-polymerized reline resins GC and Triplex resins were bonded to the samples (subgroups T and G, respectively, n=14). The specimens were subjected to shear bond strength test after they were stored in distilled water for 1 week and thermo-cycled for 5000 cycles. Data were analyzed with independent t-test, two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Tukey's post hoc multiple comparison test (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The bond strength values of A and S were significantly higher than those of N (P<.001 for both). However, statistically significant difference was not observed between group A and group S. According to the independent Student's t-test, the shear bond strength values of AT were significantly higher than those of AG (P<.001). CONCLUSION. The surface treatment of polyamide denture base materials with acetic acid may be an efficient and cost-effective method for increasing the shear bond strength to auto-polymerized reline resin.

Recently, as the service life of structures increased, the load-carrying capacity of deteriorated reinforced concrete, where corrosion of reinforcing bars occurs due to various causes, is frequently decreased. In order to address this problem, many studies on the bond characteristic of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars with corrosion resistance, light weight and high tensile strength have been conducted, however there are not many studies on the bond characteristic of grid-typed CFRP embedded in concrete. Therefore, in order to evaluate the bond characteristics of grid-typed CFRP and its usability as a substitute for steel rebar, a pull-out test is performed using the longitudinal bond length and transverse grid length of the grid-typed CFRP as variables. Through the pull-out test, the bond load-slip curve of the grid-typed CFRP is derived, and the bond behavior is analyzed. The total bond load equation is proposed as the sum of the bond force of the longitudinal bond length and the shear force of the grid in the transverse direction. Also, expressing the area of the bond load-slip curve as total work, the change in dissipated energy with respect to the slip is analyzed to examine the effect of the tranverse grid on the bond force.
Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of chlorhexidine (CHX) on the microtensile bonds strength (${\mu}TBS$) of resin core with two adhesive systems to dentin in endodontic cavities. Materials and Methods: Flat dentinal surfaces in 40 molar endodontic cavities were treated with self-etch adhesive system, Contax (DMG) and total-etch adhesive system, Adper Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) after the following surface treatments: (1) Priming only (Contax), (2) CHX for 15 sec + rinsing + priming (Contax), (3) Etching with priming (Adper Single Bond 2), (4) Etching + CHX for 15 sec + rinsing + priming (Adper Single Bond 2). Resin composite build-ups were made with LuxaCore (DMG) using a bulk method and polymerized for 40 sec. For each condition, half of specimens were submitted to ${\mu}TBS$ after 24 hr storage and half of them were submitted to thermocycling of 10,000 cycles between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ before testing. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and independent t-test at a significance level of 95%. Results: CHX pre-treatment did not affect the bond strength of specimens tested at the immediate testing period, regardless of dentin surface treatments. However, after 10,000 thermocycling, all groups showed reduced bond strength. The amount of reduction was greater in groups without CHX treatments than groups with CHX treatment. These characteristics were the same in both self-etch adhesive system and total-etch adhesive system. Conclusions: 2% CHX application for 15 sec proved to alleviate the decrease of bond strength of dentin bonding systems. No significant difference was shown in ${\mu}TBS$ between total-etching system and self-etching system.

This study focuses on the investigation of bond strength of magnesium potassium phosphate cement mortar(MKPC) according to moisture condition of substrate. Tensile bond test, shear bond test and interfacial bond test are adopted for evaluating the adhesion characteristics of MKPC to conventional cement mortar substrate. The main experimental variables are test methods and moisture levels of substrate. Because the moisture condition of the substrate may be critical to achieving bond, optimum moisture condition for a conventional concrete substrate has evaluated in this study. The results are as follows ; The effects of moisture condition at substrate into the bonding of MKPC are less different than polymer cement mortar and epoxy mortar. But the saturated and surface dry condition is the most appropriate moisture level among the considered, followed by saturated condition and wet condition. Thus, an adequate moisture level of substrate for MKPC is essential for good bond strength.

When the low temperature service steels are used as materials for welded structure, some problems-brittleness and weld cracking, etc.-occur in welded part due to the change of mechanical and metallurgical characteristics resulted from the thermal cycle during the welding procedure. In this study, the experiments were conducted to investigate the change of mechanical and metallurgical characteristics of the welded part for the low temperature and high pressure service steels. Moreover, the Static and Dynamic Implant Test Method was introduced to this study in order to find out the mechnism of weld cracking. In addition, the fracture toughnesses of welded bond were inspected under the various low temperature environments. Main results obtained are as follows; 1) The effect of the hydrogen on the fatigue characteristics of the weld bond can be estimated by the new self-contrived Dynamic Implant Test equipment. 2) The fine micro-structure and low hardness in the heat affected zone can be obtained by the small heat input multi-pass welding. 3) The susceptibility of the delayed cracking is largely affected by the condition of used electrode. 4) The transition temperature of the fracture surface in weld bond appears to be higher 20 .deg. C than that in base metal.
In order to evaluate the lifespan of high-temperature parts with thermal barrier coating in gas turbines used for power generation, this study was performed on an 80 MW-class gas turbine exceeding 24 k equivalent operating hours. Degradation characteristics were evaluated by analyzing the YSZ (Yttria Stabilized Zirconia) top coat, which serves as the thermal barrier coating layer, the NiCrAlY bond coat, and interface layers. Microstructural analysis of the top, middle, and bottom sections showed that Thermal Growth Oxide (TGO) growth, Cr precipitate growth within the bond coat layer, and formation of diffusion layer occur actively in high-temperature sections. These microstructural changes were consistent with damaged areas of the thermal barrier coating layer observed at the surface of the used blade. The distribution of Cr precipitates within the bond coat layer, in addition to the thickness of TGO, is regarded as a key indicator in the evaluation of degradation characteristics.

The use of the co-cured joining method for composite structures is attractive due to several benefits. However, since the design stress level in cyclic loads is often smaller than the joint strength obtained from the static tensile load test, it is important to establish proper fatigue design criteria. Although some researchers have reported on co-cured joints, there are only a few papers published on the fatigue characteristics of co-cured joints. In this paper, the effect of bond parameters on the fatigue characteristics of a steel-composite co-cured double lap joint under cyclic tensile loads was experimentally investigated. We considered the surface roughness of the steel adherend and the stacking sequence of the composite adherend as bond parameters. A fatigue failure mechanism of the co-cured double lap joint was explained systematically by investigating the surfaces of failed specimens.
The interfacial adhesive joining characteristics of the foams are very important for the structural integrity of sandwich structures. Peel strength is one of the best criteria for the interfacial characteristics of the sandwich structures and peel energy is most commonly used for the interfacial characteristics. The peel strength is the first peak force per unit width of bond line required to produce progressive separation by the wedge or other crack opening type action of two adherends where one or both undergo significant bending and the peel energy is the surface active energy per unit width of bond line. In this work, to investigate the strengthening effect of resin treatment on the interfacial surface of foam material, peel strength and peel energy of epoxy resin treated polyurethane foam core sandwich structures were obtained by the cleavage peel tests and compared with those of non surface treated polyurethane foam core sandwich structures.
