  • Various adverse effects can occur due to direct exposure from toxic substances when toxic materials are used to restore river ecosystems. Thus, this study performed analysis on the development of toxicity in terms of survival and abnormality rates using embryos of Bombina orientalis living in Korea to analyze the toxicity of materials used in the river projects. The results showed that the toxicity in cement (C group) was the strongest whereas the toxicity in plant-based polyurethane (P1 group) was the weakest. Survival rates of B. orientalis embryos were 100%, 94 - 95%, 66 - 89% and 0% in control, P1, polyurethane (P2) and C groups, respectively. Abnormalities of embryos were 10.5%, 5.3 - 10.5%, 26.3 - 27.8% and 35.7% in control, P1, P2 and C groups, respectively. Furthermore, we verified that having a sufficient curing time reduced toxic substances that were extracted. The above result suggest that cement and polyurethane hamper the early development of amphibians. In conclusion, it is highly important to review biological safety with respect to the selection of materials used to restore rivers. This study shows the importance of the selection of eco-friendly materials and processes.

  • Some minor carotenoid pigments, luteints, lutein monoester, torulene, $\gamma$-carotene, and 5,6-monoepoxy-$\alpha$-carotene-like have been separated and identified from the abdominal skin of Bombina Orientalis. Their structures have been established through the physical and chemical properties, VIS-UV and IR spectral characteristics, and chromatographic behaviors.

  • Paper partition chromatography has been applied to estimate the amino acids in the liver of Bombina orientalis Boulenger. The results obtained are as follows : 1) The presence of cystine, serine, glycine, threonine, alanine, $\beta$-alanine, tyrosine, histidine, asparagine, tryptophane, methionine, valine, phenylalanine, leucine and an unknown substance has been demonstrated in the alcoholic extracts of the material. 2) The presence of glutamine, cystine, serine , glycine, arginine, threonine, histidine, alanine, methionine, proline, valine ,phenylalanine, leucine, and two unknown substances has been demonstrated in the acid-hydrolyzed liver. 3) Tyrosine, asparagine, and trypotphane have been demonstrated only in the alcoholic extract. 4) Proline, glutamine and arginine have been demonstrated only in the acid-jydrolyzed liver.

Cacopoides borealis 와 Bufo bufo asiaticus 의 혈청단백질은 4개의 protein fraction 으로 나누어지는데 Cacopoides boreealis 에서는 fraction IV protein이 Bufo bufo asiaticus 에서는 fraction I protein 이 가장 많은 함량을 구성하고 있다.

  • Antimicrobial peptides are widely distributed in nature and appear to play important roles in the host defense of plants and animals. In this study, we isolated and characterized three antimicrobial peptides from skin secretions of the oriental fire-bellied toad, Bombina orientalis. These purified peptides were referred to as P1, P2, and P3 in order of their elution. P1, P2, and P3 have molecular weights of 2569, 2566, and 2370 Da by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, respectively. They are heat-stable, amphipathic peptides of 24-27 amino acids without cysteine residues. All three peptides are active against representative gram negative and gram positive bacterial species, and in particular, P1 appears to have distinctive antifungal activity. However, no significant hemolytic activity was found for these peptides.
