MULTI-SCALE MODELING AND ANALYSIS OF CONVECTIVE BOILING: TOWARDS THE PREDICTION OF CHF IN ROD BUNDLES

  • In this paper we describe current activities on the project Multi-Scale Modeling and Analysis of convective boiling (MSMA), conducted jointly by the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and the Swiss Nuclear Utilities (Swissnuclear). The long-term aim of the MSMA project is to formulate improved closure laws for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for prediction of convective boiling and eventually of the Critical Heat Flux (CHF). As boiling is controlled by the competition of numerous phenomena at various length and time scales, a multi-scale approach is employed to tackle the problem at different scales. In the MSMA project, the scales on which we focus range from the CFD scale (macro-scale), bubble size scale (meso-scale), liquid micro-layer and triple interline scale (micro-scale), and molecular scale (nano-scale). The current focus of the project is on micro- and meso-scales modeling. The numerical framework comprises a highly efficient, parallel DNS solver, the PSI-BOIL code. The code has incorporated an Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) to tackle complex geometries. For simulation of meso-scales (bubbles), we use the Constrained Interpolation Profile method: Conservative Semi-Lagrangian $2^{nd}$ order (CIP-CSL2). The phase change is described either by applying conventional jump conditions at the interface, or by using the Phase Field (PF) approach. In this work, we present selected results for flows in complex geometry using the IBM, selected bubbly flow simulations using the CIP-CSL2 method and results for phase change using the PF approach. In the subsequent stage of the project, the importance of effects of nano-scale processes on the global boiling heat transfer will be evaluated. To validate the models, more experimental information will be needed in the future, so it is expected that the MSMA project will become the seed for a long-term, combined theoretical and experimental program.

Numerical investigation of film boiling heat transfer on the horizontal surface in an oscillating system with low frequencies

  • Film boiling is of great importance in nuclear safety as it directly influences the integrity of nuclear fuel in case of accidents involving loss of coolant. Recently, nuclear power plant safety under earthquake conditions has received much attention. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no existing studies reporting film boiling in an oscillating system. Most previous studies for film boiling were performed on stationary systems. In this study, numerical simulations were performed for saturated film boiling of water on a horizontal surface under low frequencies to investigate the effect of system oscillation on film boiling heat transfer. A coupled level-set and volume-of-fluid method was used to track the interface between the vapor and liquid phases. With a fixed oscillation amplitude, overall, heat transfer decreases with oscillation frequency. However, there is a frequency region in which heat transfer remains nearly constant. This lock-on phenomenon occurs when the oscillation frequency is near the natural bubble release frequency. With a fixed oscillation frequency, heat transfer decreases with oscillation amplitude. With a fixed maximum amplitude of the additional gravity, heat transfer is affected little by the combination of oscillation amplitude and frequency.

  • Human genomic Deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA) was extracted from teeth by boiling, salting-out, phenol, boiling-phenol methods. The author compared DNA concentration and its purity, the accuracy of sex determination and the results of the D1S80 locus detection among above 4 methods. The following results were obtained : 1. DNA concentration was the highest in pulp with salting-out method and DNA purity was higher in pulp with salting-out and phenol methods than other 2 methods. 2. Sex determination was possible using of the pulp and the dentin of the teeth with four methods but, it was impossible in the enamel and some pulp with boiling method. 3. Amplification of D1S80 locus occurred from pulp and dentin with salting-out, phenol, and boiling-phenol methods. 4. There are no differences among the amplification of X-Y homologus amelogenin gene by application of 4 methods and salting-out, phenol methods efficiently makes available to amplification of D1S80 locus. From the investigation DNA extraction, sex determination, amplification of D1S80 locus was successfully accomplished with salting-out, phenol, boiling-phenol methods Therefore above 3 methods are available and applicable as forensic odontology for individual identification.

Rib-eye의 조리기구 및 조리방법에 따른 물성 연구 (A Study on Rheology of the Rib-eye Cooked by Cooking Method and Cooking Utensil)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the physico-chemical properties during the rib-eye preperation while cooked rib-eye and fine sensory evaluation by various cooked utensil (oven, fry-pan and microwave). 1) Change of moisture contents of sauce-pan boiling cooker was lower than boiling by preasure cooker and fat content of sauce-pan boiling was higher than preasure cooker boiling. 2) Degree of cholesterol of cooker meat was not change for content of cholesterol during the boiling preperation but progressively decreased in order of well-done steak < medium steak < rare steak measured by cholesterol analysis. 3) Sensory evaluation conducted by fine graduate as panelists showed that oven steak and fry-pan steak had higher score of sensory evaluation. While microwave steak had the lowest score all sensory profile score.

Two-Phase Flows and Boiling Heat Transfer in Microchannels

  • A study of literatures on flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flows inside microchannels is summarized. The potential applications, fabrication method and efforts to determine certain dimensional threshold for microchannels classifications are discussed. For the last two decades, numerous two-phase flow and heat transfer models for microchannels have been developed; many of them were derived from empirical models originally applied for conventional channels. Those models are discussed here along with a brief review on recent development of theoretical and phenomenological-based models for microchannels. This study is devoted to provide a review of important issues on flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flows inside microchannels, including two-phase flow patterns, boiling heat transfer mechanism and correlations developments, pressure drop and prediction methods, and critical heat flux.

핵비등에서의 기포거동에 관한 수치해석 (Numerical Simulation of Bubble Motion During Nucleate Boiling)

  • Direct numerical simulation of bubble growth and merger process on a single nucleation site during partial nucleate boiling is performed. The equations governing conservation of mass, momentum and energy are solved using a finite difference method combined with a level set method for capturing the vapor-liquid interface. The level set method is modified to include the effects of phase change at the interface and contact angle at the wall. Also, a simplified formulation for predicting the evaporative heat flux in a thin liquid micro-layer is developed and incorporated into the level set formulation. Based on the numerical results, the bubble growth and merger pattern and its effect on the heat transfer are discussed.

  • One of the primary advantage of acrylic resin teeth is their ability to bond chemically to the denture base resins. But, occasionally, failure have been observed in which acrylic resin teeth break lose from the denture, indicating that chemical bonding does not always occur. The most probable explanation for this type of failure was the presence of a trace of wax remaining as a residue on the surfaces of the teeth after the boiling-out procedure which adgered to the tooth surface and prevented bonding. The purpose of this stdy was preparing the specimens of denture base resin with acrylic resin teeth that four treatment method to ridge lap portion of the tooth and investigated bond between the teeth and denture base resin with tensile strength. Compared results of tensile strength on test specimens were as follows: 1. The mean of strength among the four test groups showed the difference was significant enough(P 0.01). The order of its strength mean was methylene chloride treatment group, detergent solution treatment group, kerosene-ether treatment grgoup, boiling water only group. 2. In compared results between the wax eliminating method groups, there were significant difference between the boiling water only group and other groups(P 0.01), no significant difference were found in the wax eliminating method groups except boiling water only group(P 0.05).

신장이식 수혜자의 경험 (A Study on the Experience of Patients with Chronic Renal Failure who have Received a Kidney Transplant)

  • The grafting of a kidney has been found to be the best medical treatment for patients who have renal insufficiency failure, but the patients still have experienced much trouble and apprehension. This study was done to further nursing theory developing for patients who have has a kidney graft from another person. The research method followed grounded theory methodology of Strauss and Corbin. The subjects were three female and four male patients. This study done befween Oct. 1997 and Mar. 1998. All of the subjects were interviewed by the author. Interview were done by the long interview technique and observation. In the process of data analysis, 'heart-boiling' was found to be the core phenomenon. The results were composed to 101 concepts. These concepts were grouped into nineteen categories, and then to twelve categories. There were 12 super-class categories as follows ; 'pain', 'heart-boiling', 'experience of dialysis', 'term of admission to a hospital', 'support of other person', 'dependence on God', 'direction', 'negative reaction', 'positive reaction', 'comfortable', 'lacking', 'acceptance'. In this process, 14 hypotheses were derived from the categories as follows ; (1) The more experience with dialysis that the patients have, the stronger the heart-boiling will tend to be. (2) The less experience with dialysis the patients have, the weaker the heart-boiling will tend to be. (3) The longer admission to hospital the patients have, the stronger the heart-boiling will be. (4) The shorter the admission to hospital the patients have, the weaker the heart-boiling will be. (5) The weaker the intense-grief is, the more positive the reaction to heart-boiling the patients wll have. (6) The stronger the intense-grief is, the more negative the reaction to heart-boiling the patients will have. (7) The stronger the support of other persons that the patients have, the more positive the reaction to heart-boiling the patients will have. (8) The weaker the support of other person that the patients have, the more negative the reaction to heart-boiling the patients will have. (9) The stronger the dependence on God that the patients have, the mure positive reaction to heart-boiling the patients will have. (10) The weaker the dependence on God that the patients have, the more negative reaction to heart-boiling the patients will have. (11) The more positive thoughts that the patients have, the more positive reaction to heart-boiling the patinets will have. (12) The more negative thoughts that the patients have, the more negative reaction to heart-boiling the patients will have. (13) The more positive reaction the patients have, the more free from heart-boiling the patients tend to be. (14) The more negative reaction the patients have, the less free from heart-boiling the patients tend to be. From the analysis of observed data and comparing each class, I concluded that there are four formula relation types between reaction of patients and heart-boiling. (1) If patients have the experience of dialysis, have a long term admission to hospital, are strong in heart-boiling, depend on God, have positive thoughts and another's strong support, they experience release by positive reaction to the intense-grief. (2) If patients have the experience of dialysis, have a short term admission to hospital, are weak in heart-boiling, do not depend on God, have negative thoughts, and have few supports from others, they experience attachment to heart-boiling though a negative reaction. (3) If patients have the experience of dialysis, have a long term admission to hospital, are strong in heart-boiling, do not depend on God, and have negative thoughts, they experience attachment to heart-boiling through negative reaction in spite of support from another. (4) If patients have the experience of dialysis, have a long term admission into hospital, are strong in heart-boiling and satisfaction is low, but they have positive thoughts, then they experience acceptance and harmony through the positive reaction to heart-boiling. The results of this study are expected to help the way nurses care for patients who have had a kidney graft from another.

조리방법에 따른 삼겹살의 물리화학적 특성 변화 (Physico-Chemical Changes in Pork Bellies with Different Cooking Methods)

  • 삼겹살을 먹을 때, 동물성 지방의 섭취를 줄일 수 있는 효과적인 조리방법을 제시하기 위하여 삼겹살을 삶기, 찌기, 굽기 및 튀기기의 방법으로 가열조리한 후, 물리화학적 특성의 변화를 조사하였다. 가열조리에 의하여 전체적으로 수분 양은 감소하고 지질 양은 증가하였는데, 이에 따른 가열감량, 탈수량 및 탈유량은 튀기기와 삶기 처리구에서 높았다. 시료의 pH는 삶기 처리구에서 가장 많이 증가하였고, 시료로부터 추출한 지질의 산가와 굴절율은 튀기기 처리구에서 가장 많이 증가하였다. 경도, 점착성 및 저작성은 삶기에 의하여 크게 증가하였으나 튀기기 처리구에서는 크게 감소하였고, 탄력성은 삶기 처리구에서 가장 많이 감소하였으며, 응집성은 찌기 처리구에서 가장 많이 증가하였다. CIE $L^*$값은 찌기 처리구에서는 크게 증가하였지만 튀기기 처리구에서는 크게 감소하였고, CIE $a^*$값은 전체적으로 감소하였는데 삶기 처리구에서 가장 많이 감소하였으며, CIE $b^*$값은 삶기와 찌기 처리구에서는 감소하였지만 굽기와 튀기기 처리구에서는 증가하였다. 생 삼겹살 지방을 구성하는 지방산에는 oleic acid(42.4%), palmitic acid(23.9%)와 linoleic acid(16.1%)가 많았으며, 포화지방산에 대한 단일불포화지방산의 비율은 1.190 그리고 포화지방산에 대한 고도불포화지방산의 비율은 0.466 이었다. 가열조리 방법에 따른 시료의 지방산 조성은 튀기기 처리구를 제외하고는 거의 변화가 없었다. 따라서 삼겹살을 먹을 때 동물성 지방의 섭취를 줄일 수 있는 효과적인 조리방법은 삶기라고 판단된다.

수평관내 냉매의 과냉비등열전달에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Subcooled Boiling Heat Transfer in a Horizontal Tube)

  • A new reliable method to prediet the axial vapor fraction distribution from the measured probability density of the liquid bulk temperature is suggested in this paper. And also the actual quality of the subcooled boiling flow is easily calculated from the liquid bulk temperature. When the heat generating rate is reached to the CHF value, the sharp wall temperature increasing by the wall temperature fluctuation is occurred under the CHF condition. This paper presents the simple wall temperature fluctuation model of transition boiling by the repeating process of overheating and quenching, when the coalescent bubble passes slowly near the wall. Experiments for the subcooled R-113 flow are carride-out in the range of(0.9399~4.461)${\times}10^6$kg/$m^2$hr mass velocity and 10~3$0^{\circ}C$ intel subcooling condition.
