  • In midst of electrical energy consumption on the rise due to the industrial development and the improved quality of living, medium capacity and multi boilers which use gas that is comparatively low cost and can be supplied reliably are simulated for energy consumption using the partial load data obtained from the experiment. Economic analysis that considers initial and operation costs is carried out based on the Annual equal payment method.

Operation optimization of auxiliary electric boiler system in HTR-PM nuclear power plant

  • Electric boilers (EBs) are the backup steam source for the auxiliary steam system of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plants. When the plant is in normal operations, the EB is always in hot standby status. However, the current hot standby operation strategy has problems of slow response, high power consumption, and long operation time. To solve these problems, this study focuses on the optimization of hot standby operations for the EB system. First, mathematical models of an electrode immersion EB and its accompanying deaerator were established. Then, a control simulation platform of the EB system was developed in MATLAB/Simulink implementing the established mathematical models and corresponding control systems. Finally, two optimization strategies for the EB hot standby operation were proposed, followed by dynamic simulations of the EB system transient from hot standby to normal operations. The results indicate that the proposed optimization strategies can significantly speed up the transient response of the EB system from hot standby to normal operations and reduce the power consumption in hot standby operations, improving the dynamic performance and economy of the system.

A Preliminary Study on Direct Ethanol SOFC for Marine Applications

  • This research presents an innovative integrated ethanol solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system designed for applications in marine vessels. The system incorporates an exhaust gas heat recovery mechanism. The high-temperature exhaust gas produced by the SOFC is efficiently recovered through a sequential process involving a gas turbine (GT), a regenerative system, steam Rankine cycles, and a waste heat boiler (WHB). A comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of this integrated SOFC-GT-SRC-WHB system was performed. A simulation of this proposed system was conducted using Aspen Hysys V12.1, and a genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the system parameters. Thermodynamic equations based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics were utilized to assess the system's performance. Additionally, the exergy destruction within the crucial system components was examined. The system is projected to achieve an energy efficiency of 58.44% and an exergy efficiency of 29.43%. Notably, the integrated high-temperature exhaust gas recovery systems contribute significantly, generating 1129.1 kW, which accounts for 22.9% of the total power generated. Furthermore, the waste heat boiler was designed to produce 900.8 kg/h of superheated vapor at 170 ℃ and 405 kP a, serving various onboard ship purposes, such as heating fuel oil and accommodations for seafarers and equipment.

Evaluation of Plant Performance during Biomass Co-firing in Pulverized Coal Power Plant (미분탄화력발전에서의 바이오매스 혼소 시 플랜트 성능특성 평가)

  • The aims of this research were to evaluate effects of biomass co-firing to pulverized coal power plants and the variation of co-firing ratios on the plant efficiency related to power consumption of auxiliary system and flue gas characteristics such as production and component by process simulation based on the existing pulverized coal power plant. In this study, four kinds of biomass are selected as renewable fuel candidates for co-firing: wood pellet(WP), palm kernel shell(PKS), empty fruit bunch(EFB) and walnut shell(WS). Process simulation for various biomass fuels and co-firing ratios was performed using a commercial software. Gas side including combustion system and flue gas treatment system was considering with combination of water and steam side which contains turbines, condenser, feed water heaters and pumps. As a result, walnut shell might be the most suitable as co-firing fuel among four biomass since when 10% of walnut shell was co-fired with 90% of coal on thermal basis, flue gas production and power consumption of auxiliary systems were the smallest than those of other biomass co-firing while net plant efficiency was relatively higher than those of other biomass co-firing. However, with increasing walnut shell co-firing ratios, boiler efficiency and net plant efficiency were expected to decrease rather than coal combustion without biomass co-firing.

  • For the design of selective catalytic reactors of NOx by $NH_3$, engineering approach can be performed to determine the reactor shape, mixing device and $NH_3$ injection system. This study shows the optimization of guide vanes to improve the flow pattern near the catalyst layer of SCR in a untility boiler. By varying their spacings and shapes, flow performance of guide vanes was analyzed to achieve an uniform velocity distribution which increases the NOx convesion efficiency, and a flow direction normal to the layer which minimises the erosion by the dust in the flue gas. Including these results, experimental and numerical studies for the SCR design were discussed.

  • Diverging channel from gas burner exit to the inlet section of Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) has been re-designed for 1 MW system. To improve the uniformity in velocity and temperature distribution of existing design(Case A and B) of 300 kW HRSG system, two additional test geometries have been chosen for the numerical simulation. At first, gas burner exit section has been centered to the inlet section of boiler(Case C) and uniformity has been improved considerably. Secondly, the diverging channel length can be further reduced for compact geometry with new guide vane design (Case D and E). Proposed design shows overall improvement in uniformity in velocity and temperature distribution compared to existing one.

  • This simulation shows turbine trip on range mode, combined operation of 4 boilers and 5 turbines, for shoaiba desalination plant which is being operated in Saudi Arabia. In this model, unit master controller controls load demand, fuel and air flowrate to be consumed during operating of the plant. Feedwater controller controls drum level to compensate feedwater with superheater steam flow. This analysis was performed by constructing a dynamic model of the plant using ProTRAX and running it through the appropriate.

  • The automated chemical analysis shop floor are developed for the environmental pollution problems in our chemical analysis center. This shop floor have the several equipments include weight, pour, dry, heater, boiler, mixture, spectroscopy etc. And the material handling components are made up by the stored stack, conveyore, turntables, robot etc. Computer simulation has been an important tool for these complete design problem. We have designed the arangement of chemical equipments and material flow systems by using the simulator "AutoModII". "AutoMoII" is one of the advanced simulator, CAD-like drawing tools with a powerful, engineering oriented language to model control logic and material flow. The result is the modeling of the chemical analysis system in accurate, three dimensional detail. We could designed the set able layout and scheduling system by using the AutoMoII simulator. Design of QFT controller of superconductor flywheel energy storage system for load frequency control

  • In this paper, the Superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFESS) was used for the load frequency control (LFC) of an interconnected 2 area power system. The robust SFESS controller using quantitative feedback theory (QFT) was designed to improve control performance in spite of parameter uncertainty and unexpected disturbances. An overlapping decomposition method was applied to simplify SFESS controller design for the interconnected 2 area power system. The model for simulation of the interconnected 2 area power system included the reheat steam turbine, governor, boiler dynamics and nonlinearity such as governor deadband and generation rate constraint (GRC). To verify robust performance of proposed SFESS controller, dynamic simulation was performed under various disturbances and parameters variation of power system. The results showed that the proposed SFESS controller was more robust than the conventional method.
