  • This research presents a new method of detecting and diagnosing faults of a power plant. Detection of characteristic wave patterns from multichannel instrumentation signals forms the basis of the proposed approach. The dynamics of 500MW drum-type boiler (Boryung coal-fired plant unit #1 and #2) and its control systems are modeled and simulated to generate diverse operation patterns and fault situations and to utilize them for the development of the fault detection algorithms. The results of the boiler system modeling and simulations show a fairly high agreement when compared with some of the actual plant performance test data.

  • This study is to investigate the industrial boiler which can be significantly affected by the restriction of NOx. Note that the application of SNCR method to industrial boiler is usually blown as not feasible due to the insufficient residence time for proper mixing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the SNCR system application to the industrial boiler, which produces 40 tons of steam per hour using heavy oil. For the industrial boiler with 3-D rectangular coordinate, the general coding are made fur various turbulence modeling such as turbulent flow, turbulent fuel combustion, thermal NO formation and destruction together with the NO reaction with reducing agents. Further, the incorporation of drop trajectory model is successfully made in 3-D rectangular coordinate with Lagrangian frame and the main swirl burner effect on the characteristics of flame is considered. As expected a short flame was created and thereby NOx is removed more efficiently by increasing the proper region of temperature for NO reduction reaction. The validation of program was made successfully by the comparison of experimental data. Based on the reliable calculation results, the SNCR method in a industrial boiler shows the possibility as one of viable NO reduction method by the use of well designed mixing air of reducing agent.

  • A receptor model application was performed by using a chemical mass balance (CMB) model to identify and apportion the specific source of airborne organic pollutants, particularly polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Source profiles of PAHs produced from the combustion of fossil fuels for CMB modeling were prepared by measuring them in emission gases. The emission sources which were examineed for the development of PAH source profiles are a coal-fired furnace using Yontan, a bunker-C iol heating boiler, and gasoline-and diesel engine automobiles. The ambient concentrations of PAHs were determined at four sites in Daejon city in 1991 with a seasonal variation. Wintertime air samples contained more extractable organic matter than summertime samples. The results of CMB modeling were various depending on the sampling sites and seasons, but the emission from bunker-C oil heating boliers was the predominant factor to affect local air quality throughout the year.

  • Presented is the design method of the waste heat recovery facility for the flue gas produced from combustion and incineration processes of large industrial environmental waste treatment and cogeneration plants. The present study assumes the basic design concept of wast heat recovery facility as the combination of waste heat recovery boiler and steam power cycle, and then describes the modeling technique, the design concept and criteria of each component of waste heat recovery facility. In addition, the present study investigates how the thermal performance of waste heat recovery facility varies with boiler operating pressure and waste heat recovery heat exchanger design at the same flue gas condition.

  • The heating performance of a solar thermal seasonal storage system applied to a glass greenhouse was analyzed numerically. For this study, the gardening 16th zucchini greenhouse of Jeollanam-do agricultural research & extension services was selected. And, the heating load of the glass greenhouse selected was 576 GJ. BTES (Borehole Thermal Energy Storage) was considered as a seasonal storage, which is relatively economical. The TRNSYS was used to predict and analyze the dynamic performance of the solar thermal system. Numerical simulation was performed by modeling the solar thermal seasonal storage system consisting of flat plate solar collector, BTES system, short-term storage tank, boiler, heat exchanger, pump, controller. As a result of the analysis, the energy of 928 GJ from the flat plate solar collector was stored into BTES system and 393 GJ of energy from BTES system was extracted during heating period, so that it was confirmed that the thermal efficiency of BTES system was 42% in 5th year. Also since the heat supplied from the auxiliary boiler was 87 GJ in 5th year, the total annual heating demand was confirmed to be mostly satisfied by the proposed system.

  • Finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the integrity of the tubes in the fixed tubesheet of horizontal type heat exchanger under operating condition. For the finite element analysis of the heat exchanger, tubes and tubesheets were equivalently modeled with concentroidal hexagonal columns and solid plates having equivalent properties for the convenience of finite element modeling, respectively. Load combination of tube pressure and thermal expansion most likely to precipitate possible failure of the tubes was selected and applied to the finite element analysis. The compressive stresses of the tubes were calculated based on displacements of each tube, which were obtained from anile element analysis. Finally, the maximum tube stress was compared with the design criterion of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII.

  • The automated chemical analysis shop floor are developed for the environmental pollution problems in our chemical analysis center. This shop floor have the several equipments include weight, pour, dry, heater, boiler, mixture, spectroscopy etc. And the material handling components are made up by the stored stack, conveyore, turntables, robot etc. Computer simulation has been an important tool for these complete design problem. We have designed the arangement of chemical equipments and material flow systems by using the simulator "AutoModII". "AutoMoII" is one of the advanced simulator, CAD-like drawing tools with a powerful, engineering oriented language to model control logic and material flow. The result is the modeling of the chemical analysis system in accurate, three dimensional detail. We could designed the set able layout and scheduling system by using the AutoMoII simulator. • The present paper describes the slagging field data obtained with the one-dimensional process model for the 500 MW tangentially coal fired boiler in Korea. To obtain slagging field data in terms of thermal resistances [$m^2{\cdot}^{\circ}C/kW$], a number of plant data were collected and analyzed with the one-dimensional modelling software at 500 MW full load. The slagging field data for the primary superheater were obtained for six coal blends, and compared with two TMA (Thermo-Mechanical analyzer) slagging indices and the numerical slagging index, along with the conventional slagging indices which were modified with the ash loading. The advanced two TMA indices for six blended coals give a good slagging tendency when comparing them with the slagging field data, while the modified conventional slagging indices give a relatively poor agreement.

  • Coal power plants are large, non-linear systems with numerous interactions between its component parts. In the analysis of such complex systems, dynamic simulation is recognized as a powerful method of keeping track of the myriad of interactions. This paper shows and discusses the developed analysis model, such as the forced draft fan the primary air fan, the furnace and burner system, air preheater and induced draft fan, etc. in accordance with BMCR condition of boiler using the Modular Modeling System(MMS) software.
