  • The physiological significances of the upper and lower body on thermoregulation and sensation were studied in this paper. Experiments were carried out on 4 females in a climatic chamber conditioned at 1) $25^{\circ}C\rightarrow35^{\circ}C\rightarrow25^{\circ}C$, 2) $25^{\circ}C\rightarrow15^{\circ}C\rightarrow25^{\circ}C$, both with 50% R.H., covering the upper body (U) or lower body (L) with garments. 1. When the upper or lower body is covered or exposured respectively, the mean skin tempterature of upper body is higher than that of lower body. And upper body is more easily influenced by the environmental temperature than lower body. It means the skin temperatures of the upper body change faster than those of the lower body following the environmental changes. 2. In U and L, the skin temperatures of the upper limbs (thighs, upper arms) are lower than those of the peripherals (hands, feet). 3. Warm sensations and skin temperatures of the upper body showed high correlation and it was the case with cold sensations and skin temperatures of the lower body. 4. In high temperature condition $(25^{\circ}C\rightarrow35^{\circ}C\rightarrow25^{\circ}C)$, mean skill temperature and rectal temperature in L were lower than in U. This lower rectal temperature in L is probably due to the insulation of the lower body with garments that promotes the heat radiation only in the high temperature environment.

  • The changes in body temperatures of students in physical trained and untrained colleges have been studied as a funtion of garment styles under three different environmental conditions ($13{\pm}1$, $21{\pm}1$, $31{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, $60{\pm}5%$ RH, 0.25m/sec). Since exposures of the extremities of body affect the regulation of body temperature, two types of garments, i.e., the skirt and the slacks, were used in order to observe the effects of the garment styles on the regulation of body temperatures. The skirt exposed the calf of the leg, while the slacks did not. Because the body temperature is regulated better for healtier people, the subjects were divided into two groups. one group was consisted of 2 untrained female students, and the other of 2 healthier female physical college students. 1. The rectal temperatures for those in skirt were $0.3^{\circ}C$ higher than for the ones in slacks at $13^{\circ}C$ regardless of the groups. The untrained group showed $0.3^{\circ}C$ higher rectal temperatures in skirt and $0.2^{\circ}C$ higher in slacks compared to the physical trained group. 2. The skin temperatures rose with the environmental temperatures, and the skirt gave larger mean skin temperature by $0.5^{\circ}C$ at $21^{\circ}C$. 3. At $13^{\circ}C$, the untrained group felt colder, more wet, and slightly more uncomfortable for both skirt and slacks. It is concluded that the skirt is more effective in physiological defense against cold stimuli than the slacks at $13^{\circ}C$, and that the regulation of body temperature takes place more efficiently to the physical trained students.

  • Background: Firefighters may experience high environmental temperatures or carry out intensive physical tasks, or both, which leads to increased core body temperature and risk of fatalities. Hence there is a need to remotely and non-invasively monitor core body temperature. Methods: Estimated (heart rate algorithm) and actual core body temperature (ingested telemetric pill) measures were collected simultaneously for comparison during training exercises on 44 firefighter volunteers. Results: Prediction of core body temperature varied, with no specific identifiable pattern between the algorithm values and directly measured body core temperatures. Group agreement of Lin's Concordance of 0.74 (95% Upper 0.75, lower CI 0.73), was deemed poor. Conclusion: From individual agreement data Lin's Concordance was variable (Min 0.11, CI 0.13-0.01; Max 0.83, CI 0.86-0.80), indicating that the heart rate algorithm approach was not suitable for core body temperature monitoring in this population group, especially at the higher more critical core body temperatures seen.

  • The use of light weight magnesium alloy offers significant potential towards improvement of the automotive fuel efficiency. However, the application of formed magnesium alloy components in auto-body structures is restricted due to the low formability at room temperature and lack of knowledge for processing magnesium alloys at elevated temperatures. In this study, a warm tensile test of magnesium alloys was performed to measure tensile strength and elongation. An improvement in formability was confirmed at increased temperatures above about $250^{\circ}C$. Car body warm forming technology was conducted for forming forming reinforced dash components of the magnesium alloy AZ31B sheet at elevated temperatures.

  • Temperatures of blood and skin, respiratory rate and plasma cortisol concentration in sheep at a warm (average ambient temperature of $15.3^{\circ}C$) and a hot (average ambient temperature of $27.0^{\circ}C$ environment were measured to investigate the effect of hot environment on the physiological responses in ruminant. Temperatures of core, mean skin and mean body in sheep were tended to increase at day time and to decrease at night time at both warm and hot environment, while 24-hr average for those temperatures were significantly higher at hot environment than at warm environment (P<0.05). The calculated body heat content was higher in sheep at hot environment than at warm environment (P<0.05). Respiratory rate and plasma cortisol concentration had no significant differences between warm and hot environment, suggesting that sheep were not stress by the hot environment in this experiment. It is, therefore, suggested that sheep were well adopted to hot environment by increasing body heat content against heat stress.

  • The common KIMI-Theory of Oriental medicine has evaluated clinical effects of herbal-drug based on KI, nature of berbs, and tastes. The KI in the theory consists of hotness, warm, cool and coldnes and also the Mi does five tastes such as sour, bitterness, sweet, spicy hotness and saltiness. However the KI does not mean thermal effect only. Thus we tried to determine skin and rectal temperatures at the same time for evaluating the relationship between KI and berbs. Male, adult Sprage-Dawly rat was chosen and berbal extract, 10g/Kg, was given orally once at 9:00 A.M. changes in rectal and skin temperatures were measured at 10, 30, 60, and 90 mins after the drug administratin. The changes in body temperatures are in greate deal of agreement of KI written in Herbology literatures.

  • Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of a footbath program on heart rate variability, blood pressure, body temperature and fatigue of stroke patients with stroke-induced hemiparesis. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were 40 stroke patients, twenty for the footbath program and twenty for the control group, who were hospitalized in a long-term rehabilitation hospital in G city of Korea, from February to April 2014. The twenty participants in the experimental group received the intervention of footbaths and an educational program focused on the prevention of stroke complications; Collected data were analyzed by the IBM SPSS WIN 20.0 program using a t-test, ${\chi}^2$ test, Mann-Whitney U test and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Significant differences were found in heart rate variability, systolic blood pressure, hand and foot temperatures and fatigue between the two groups. But no significant differences were found in diastolic blood pressure, core temperatures, forehead temperatures, and hand temperatures between the two groups. Conclusion: The footbath program was an effective intervention for skin temperature change and fatigue reduction for stroke patients. Therefore, it is recommended that the footbath program can be utilized as an effective nursing intervention for stroke patients in long-term rehabilitation care hospitals.

  • The present study was designed to see what the local cooling of different body regions especially head and neck, hands and feet effect physiological responses in cold environment. Four male subjects wore garments covering whole body except face and rested for 20 min and then they rested for 40 min with uncovered head, neck, hands and feet, respectively in a cold environment(10$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, 50$\pm$5%R.H.) 1. Rectal temperature increased when hands and feet were exposed to cold environment respectively, and when head and neck, hands and feet were exposed to cold environment together. 2. Exposed skin temperatures fell in cold environment. And hands temperature was lower than any other exposed skin temperatures. The hands temperature was significantly lower when head was exposed than when head was covered. And the feet temperature were significantly lower when hands were exposed than when hands were covered. 3. Mean skin temperature was the lowest when head and neck, hands and feet were exposed simultaneously, In conclusion, skin temperatures of extremities were decreased due to exposure to the cold environment. Especially upper extremities were lower than lower extremities by exposed parts of the body. It seemed that the extremities played the role of cold receptors but head and neck didn't. And there were large heat losses from the unprotected head and neck. In cold environment of 1$0^{\circ}C$ , thus, it is suggested for the purpose of thermoregulatory responses that head and neck would be covered and extremities would be exposed, especially upper extremities.

  • This study is proposed to find an appropriate body for high expansion glass ceramics of ${Na}_2O-{Al}_2O_3-{SiO}_2$ system. The compositions of basic glasses are selected to be melted easily and to be crystallized into nepheline with various contents of alumina. The crystallization temperatures of basic glasses are determined by DTA. The crystals in the basic glasses developed by heat treatment are investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis, and thermal properties such as expansion coefficients, fusion points are measured. We find, therefore, that crystallization temperatures, crystal phases and thermal properties are affected by content of alumina.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to help preparing the evidence-based data for the manual of heat applications by finding the differences of superficial and core temperatures after applying dry and moist heats on shoulder and thigh. Methods: Moist and dry heats were alternately applied on the 33 subjects a day apart from May 15, 2010 through June 9, 2010. The experiment was conducted with $23^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ room temperature and 50% to 66% of moisture from 2 to 6 p.m. After heat was applied on the shoulder of the subjects wearing shorts and gowns for 30 minutes, their superficial and core temperatures were measured. The same method was used on the thigh after two hours. Results: Both superficial and core temperatures on the shoulder and thigh increased significantly after heat therapy. There was no significant difference between the temperatures before and after intervention according to applying methods and regions. Conclusion: This study provides a theoretical basis that a dry heat is a convenient nursing intervention for hypothermic patients.
