The Relationship between Homocysteine, Obesity, Glucose and Lipid Profiles in Small-Breed Dogs (소형견종에서 Homocysteine과 비만, 당 관련 인자, 지방 관련인자의 상관관계에 대한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate whether plasma homocysteine levels were related to obesity or its contributing factors (e.g., lipids, insulin, glucose, glucagon, and fructosamine) in dogs without systemic diseases such as diabetes or renal failure. For achieving our study goal, 100 client-owned dogs without systemic diseases were enrolled in this study. Fasting glucose concentration; lipid profile (i.e., total triglycerides [TG], total cholesterol [TC], highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C], and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C]); and fructosamine, insulin, and glucagon levels were determined. The dogs were subdivided by the body condition score (BCS). The median levels of homocysteine were considerably higher in obese dogs than in lean and normal dogs. Interestingly, not only was homocysteine positively associated with the level of HDL-C, but also found to have a significant positive association with TG, TC, plasma glucagon levels, and fructosamine. In contrast, LDL-C, fasting glucose and insulin did not show any association with homocysteine. The findings presented, suggest that elevated levels of homocysteine may play a biological role in obesity in dogs.

Alteration in Concentrations of Leptin and Insulin in Korean Cattle with Reproductive Disorders (번식장애 한우의 렙틴 및 인슐린 농도 변화)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the changes in concentrations of leptin and insulin in serum of Korean cattle (Hanwoo) with reproductive disorders and to examine the relationship among leptin, insulin, and body condition score (BCS). The concentration of leptin in serum of pregnant Hanwoo showed insignificant difference from that in serum of Hanwoo with reproductive disorder, such as repeat breeding, follicular cyst, corpus luteum cyst, ovarian atrophy, and feeble estrus (p>0.05). However, the concentrations of leptin and insulin in serum were changed with different BCS value. In emaciated Hanwoo (BCS $2.0\sim2.9$), they were significantly decreased compared to BCS $3.0\sim3.4$ (p<0.05). The leptin showed different genotypes with different BCS value. In BCS $2.0\sim2.9$, C/T genotype was expressed (83.3%) more than C/C (16.7%) or T/T (0%) genotype, whereas C/C genotype was expressed (62.5%) more than C/T (25.0%) or T/T (12.5%) genotype in BCS $3.5\sim4.0$. The insulin concentration in follicular fluid obtained from ovary with follicular cyst which has follicles having diameter of $25\sim40 mm$ was significantly higher (p<0.05) than those in normal follicle fluid which has follicles having diameter of $3\sim10 mm$. These results showed that concentration of leptin and insulin in serum were related to BCS value and follicular size and suggest that the changes in concentration of leptin and/or insulin in serum could be a potent biomarker for diagnosis of bovine reproductive disorder.

Decreased Insulin Secretion in Dogs with Chronic Mitral Valve Insufficiency (만성 이첨판 폐쇄부전증 개에서 인슐린 분비기능 감소)

  • Glucose metabolism abnormalities secondary to heart failure, including insulin resistance (IR) and impaired fasting glucose, have been gradually recognized as important prognostic factors in disease progression. However, to date, no study has investigated glucose abnormalities in dogs with chronic mitral valve insufficiency (CMVD). Thus, we hypothesized that glucose metabolism abnormalities due to heart failure may develop in dogs with CMVD. A prospective study was performed on 113 client-owned dogs with variable CMVD severities. Serum insulin, glucagon, fructosamine, and glucose concentrations were measured, and insulin resistance was determined using the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) score. The serum insulin concentration had a significant inverse association with the heart failure severity. However, there was no significant association between the heart failure severity and fructosamine, HOMA score, and fasting blood glucose. Insulin, fructosamine, and HOMA had a significant positive association with body condition scores (BCS), whereas glucose had no association. This study found that insulin secretion in dogs with naturally occurring heart failure due to CMVD might be compromised as the disease worsens.

Genetic relationship of age at first calving with conformation traits and calving interval in Hanwoo cows

  • This study was performed to investigate genetic relationship of age at first calving (AFC) with body development and reproduction capacity in female Hanwoo. The data sets of 52,299 reproduction records of 19,566 heads calved from 2011 to 2019 and conformation records of 19565 heads born from 1997 to 2017 were analyzed by separating them based on age at first calving. In the analysis, conformation traits included the body condition score (BCS), height (HT), body width (BW), hip bone length (HL), hip bone width (HW), and final score (FS). The heritability and genetic correlation of AFC with conformation traits and calving interval (CI) were analyzed. The heritability for AFC was 0.716, 0.087, and 0.097 for the before and after 24 months and combined data, respectively. The genetic correlation of AFC before 24 months with BCS was -0.778, -0.600 with BW, and 0.442 with HT. The genetic correlation of AFC after 24 months with HT was -0.826, -0.706 with BW, -0.623 with HL, -0.456 with HW, and -0.675 with FS. When the first calving age of young heifers approached 24 months, BCS and BW decreased, and HT increased. When first calving is delayed to after 24 months, the conformation traits become smaller, which indicates that conformation to some extent affects the delay in AFC. The genetic correlation between CI and AFC was -0.116, 0.307, and 0.250 for the before and after 24 month of AFC and combined data, respectively. When first calving date approached 24 months, CI was reduced. The obtained results suggest that it is important that first calving occurs at an appropriate age. Additional research is needed to perform proper genetic evaluation of first calving age in Hanwoo cattle in Korea.

Effects of Recipient Factors on the Pregnancy and Abortion after Transfer of In Vitro Produced Korean Native Cow Embryos (한우 체외수정란이 이식된 수란우의 임신과 유산에 영향을 미치는 수란우 측 요인들)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of various factors of recipients such as recipient parity, body condition score(BCS), estrus type, corpus luteum, uterine size and uterine horn, on pregnancy and abortion after transfer of in vitro produced Korean Native Cow embryos. The pregnancy rate of nulliparous $(43.5\%)$was significantly higher than that of multiparous $(33.6\%)$, but there were no difference in the abortion rates $(122.6\;vs.\;7.5\%)$. There were no difference in pregnancy among the groups of BCS treatment, but the abortion rate was significantly higher in the group of below BCS $2.0\~3.0\;(55.6\%)$ than the group of BCS $3.0\~3.9\;(10.8\%)$. The pregnancy and abortion rates from the estrus type, corpus luteum, uterine size and uterine hem were not differ among treatment groups.

Seasonal Variation in Scrotal Circumference and Semen Characteristics of Black Bedouin and Black Bedouin-Damascus Crossbred Bucks

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate monthly variation in semen characteristics in Black Bedouin and Black Bedouin${\times}$Damascus crossbred bucks. Twenty one Black Bedouin Goat bucks (BG) and 20 $F_1$ Black Bedouin${\times}$Damascus crossbred goat bucks (CB) were used in the study. Animals were 2 to 5 years old at the beginning of the study. Body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), scrotal circumference (SC) and semen samples were evaluated monthly for all bucks. Body weight, BCS and SC differed according to month of collection (p<0.0001). Body weight and BCS were greater in the spring and summer months while SC reached their highest values during the autumn months. No differences were detected between breeds with respect to semen characteristics with the exception of ejaculate volume (p<0.05) and ejaculate appearance (p=0.053) which were greater in CB than in BG bucks. With the exception of ejaculate appearance, all semen characteristics were influenced by month of collection (p<0.05). Semen concentration and motility were better during the late summer and autumn months than during the spring. The percentage of abnormal spermatozoa declined from its greatest values in the spring to its lowest values in the autumn. Results of the present study show no effects of goat breed on most of the studied parameters. In general, most semen quality parameters were better in both breeds during the autumn than the spring months. Minimal variation in semen quality was observed between the summer and autumn months indicating the ability to use bucks for semen collection and for natural breeding during both of these seasons.

  • Fifth one Nili-Ravi dairy buffaloes in their last two months of gestation, were selected in NWFP Pakistan. Rectal palpation was carried out fortnightly, until the occurrence of first estrus. Ovulation was confirmed per rectum and milk progesterone levels (MPL). Body condition score (BCS)was recorded weekly. Milk samples were collected weekly for MPL and blood samples fortnightly for metabolites analysis. Milk yield was recorded and samples were collected for milk fat. The buffaloes calving during the normal breeding season (NBS, August to January)had short (p<0.01) postpartum estrus interval of $55.95{\pm}4.90$ days versus $91.15{\pm}11.61 $ days in the buffaloes calving during the low breeding season (LBS, February to July). MPL in the LBS calvers remained lower than NBS calves (p<0.01). The incidence of silent ovulation was higher during LBS as compared to NBS (70.6% versus 29.4%). MPL showed a pattern opposite to atmospheric temperature. In NBS calvers serum glucose levels were higher (p<0.01) and magnesium levels were lower (p<0.01) than LBS calvers. Higher serum urea was found in summer and spring than that autumn and winter (p<0.05). The reproductive performance in buffaloes calving in the LBS coincided with a low BCS (p<0.01). Fat corrected milk production (FCM) was higher in NBS than LBS (p<0.01) calvers.

Studies on the Incidence of Reproductive Disorder in Hanwoo (한우 암소의 번식장애에 관한 조사 연구)

  • A survey was carried out to investigate the symptoms and occurance of reproductive disorder in Hanwoo(Korean native cattle). Data of the reproductive disorder of 561 heads from 28 farm households have been collected from Dec. '95 to Nov. '96 and analyzed calving no, nutritional body condition and housing forms. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The incidence of reproductive disorder was 20.1% and the major common symptoms were repeat breeding(39.8%), anestrous(31.0%), nymphomania(10.6%) and subestrous(8.9%). 2. The incidence of reproductive disorder according to the calving no., that of heifer, calved one to two calving no. and over three calving no. were 20.6%, 13.9% and 34.5%, respectively. 3. Reproductive disorder incidence according to the nutritional body condition was 18.3%, 14.6% and 48.7% at body condition score(BCS) less than 2.0, 2.5 to 3.0 and over than 3.5, respectively. At BCS over 3.0, the symptoms of common reproductive disorder were repeat breeding(17.6%), anestrous(12.2%), nymphomania(10.8%) and subestrous(2.7%). 4. The incidence of reproductive disorder according to the housing form 15.8% and 34.6% for group feeding in open house and individual stanchion feeding in stall, respectively. In group feeding, reproductive disorder incidence of cows raised in space of more than 9.9$m^2$ per head was 14.1%, while that of cows raised less than 9.9$m^2$ per head was 18.2%. And incidence of repeat breeding, aneestrous and subestrous was more frequent in individual stanchion feeding than group feeding.

Relationship between the Conception Rate after Estrus Induction using CIDR and Other Parameters in Dairy Cows (젖소에서 CIDR 투여에 의한 발정 유도 후 수태율과 다른 인자와의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between conception rate and other parameters (body condition score; BCS, progesterone concentrations and follicle size) before estrus induction with CIDR(intravaginal progesterone-releasing controlled internal drug release). The conception rate in cows with < 2.75, 2.75 to 3.25, and 3.25 <, BCS regardless of AI (artificial insemination) time was 46.6%, 63.3%, and 46.6% at CIDR insertion, respectively. The conception rate regardless of BCS was 54.9% in cows inseminated based on detected estrus, and 48.7% in cows inseminated at 72 to 80 hours (timed artificial insemination, TAI) after removal of CIDR. The conception rate regardless of AI time was 40.0% in cows with low progesterone concentrations (less than 1.0 ng/ml), and 56.6% in cows with high progesterone concentrations (more than 1.0 ng/ml) at CIDR injection. The conception rate regardless of progesterone concentrations was 53.8% in cows inseminated based on detected estrus, and 38.0% in cows of TAI after removal of CIDR. The conception rate regardless of AI time was 43.3% in cows with small follicle (less than 5 mm), 53.3% in cows between 5 mm to 10 mm of follicle, and 63.3% in cows with large folliclc (more than 10 mm) at CIDR injection, respectively. The conception rate regardless of follicle size was 58.4% in cows inseminated based on detected estrus, and 45.9% in cows of TAI after removal of CIDR. These results indicated that if the cows with BCS 2.75 to 3.25, active corpus luteum, and/or large dominant follicle (more than 10 mm) are used for estrus induction, the conception rate will be greater.

Risk factors limiting first service conception rate in dairy cows and their economic impact

  • Objective: We determined the risk factors limiting first service conception (FSC) rate in dairy cows and their economic impact. Methods: Data were collected from 790 lactations regarding cow parity, peri- and postpartum disorders, body condition score (BCS), reproductive performance, and expenses associated with reproductive management (treatment, culling, and others). Initially, we identified the risk factors limiting FSC rate in dairy cows. Various biological and environmental factors, such as herd, cow parity, BCS at 1 month postpartum and first artificial insemination (AI), resumption of cyclicity within 1 month of calving, year, AI season, insemination at detected estrus or timed AI, peri- and postpartum disorders, and calving to first AI interval, were evaluated. Next, we evaluated the economic impact of the success or failure of FSC by comparing the expense associated with reproductive management until conception between cows that did or did not conceive at their first service. Results: Cows with BCS <3.0 had a lower probability of conceiving at first insemination (odds ratio [OR] = 0.64, p<0.05) than cows with $BCS{\geq}3.0$. Cows inseminated during summer were less likely to conceive (OR = 0.44, p<0.001) than cows inseminated during spring. Cows with peri- or postpartum disorders were less likely to conceive (OR = 0.55, p<0.001) than cows without disorders. Survival curves generated using MedCalc showed an 81 day extension in the mean interval between calving and conception in cows that failed to conceive over those that did conceive at first insemination. Cows failing conceive required additional expenditure on reproductive treatment ($55.40) and other management ($567.00) than cows that conceived at first insemination. Conclusion: Lower BCS, hot weather at first insemination, and peri- and postpartum disorders are risk factors limiting FSC, which result in an economic loss of $622.40 per dairy cow.
