  • ZnS:Cu phosphor used on powder electroluminescent device has a green emission in low frequency and a blue emission in high frequency. In this paper, to obtain the powder electroluminescent device of the blue emission in low frequency, the emission properties with mixed the ratio between phosphor and dye was investigated. The mixed ratio of the dye was from 0 to 5 weight percent. To inquire into the blue emission, the emission spectrum, the CIE coordinate system and the brightness were measured.

  • We studied the emission characteristics of white phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs), which were fabricated using a two-wavelength method. To optimize emission characteristics of white PHOLEDs, white PHOLEDs with red/blue, blue/red and red/blue/red emitting layer (EML) structures were fabricated using a host-dopant system. In case of white PHOLEDs with red/blue structure, the best efficiency was obtained at a structure of red (15 nm)/blue (15 nm). But the emission color was blue-shifted white. In case of white PHOLEDs with blue/red structure, the better color purity and efficiency were observed at a blue (29 nm)/red (1 nm) structure. For additional improvement of color purity in white PHOLEDs with blue (29 nm)/red (1 nm) EMLs, we fabricated white PHOLEDs with red (1 nm)/blue (28 nm)/red (1 nm) structure. The current efficiency, external quantum efficiency, and CIE (x, y) coordinate were 27.2 cd/A, 15.1%, and (0.382, 0.369) at 1,000 $cd/m^2$, respectively.

  • This study uses neon and xenon gas mixture discharges to determine the effects of the neon plasma emission on the characteristics of visible emission from the stimulation of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers in a surface-type alternate current plasma display panel(AC PDP). With a mixture of less than 2% xenon to neon, it is found that the luminance changes in the visible emission of the phosphor layers are similar to those of the neon plasma emission. In the range of xenon mix ratio from 2 to 5%, the luminance of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers decreases with a decrease in the neon plasma emission intensity. However, with a mixture of above 5% xenon to neon, the luminance of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers increases regardless of a decrease in the neon plasma emission intensity. Furthermore, the color purity of the red, green, blue(RGB) phosphor layers improve as the neon plasma emission intensity decreases. Accordingly, it is concluded that the optical properties of the phosphor layers, including color purity and luminance, depend on the neon plasma discharge emission as well as the visible emission from the stimulation of the phosphor layers.

  • Anthracene has been a motive molecule for the blue-emitting materials in OLED. Since the blue emission needs big band gap between HOMO and LUMO, the blue-emitting materials are rare. In this paper, some anthracene derivatives containing simple aryl groups are synthesized and characterized. Regardless of the substituents the absorption and the emission bands are similar to each other and similar to the derivatives with the bulky silyl groups. The thermal and the CIE tests imply that among the tested 9-(2-naphthyl)-10-phenylanthracene is most promising for the diode. The material for the emission layer has to be investigated, which is simple to be prepared as well as good in the electrical and the thermal properties.

  • We have synthesized new pure blue-emitting hyperbranched polyfluorene (Hyper-PDHF) through $A_2$ and $B_3$ type monomers via Suzuki coupling polymerization. The weight-average molecular weights ($M_w$) of the Hyper-PDHF was found about 35,000 with polydispersity index as 6.1. The UV absorption peak of the Hyper-PDHF film was at around 335 nm which was far blue shifted than that of linear PDHF film which was found at 380 nm. The pure blue photoluminescene (PL) peak of the Hyper-PDHF was measured at 419 nm as main emission with 397 and 444 nm as shoulder peaks. The Hyper-PDHF showed also higher PL quantum efficiency in solution than linear PDHF (Hyper-PDHF, $\Phi$sol =0.81; PDHF, $\Phi$sol=0.78). The annealed PDHF film (5 hrs on hot plate at $80^{\circ}C$) showed increased shoulder peak emissions and emission color was changed into the green emission. But, Hyper-PDHF film shows almost no excimer emission peak even the film was annealed. The enhanced PL efficiency and no excimer emission of Hyper-PDHF results from the inhibition of excimer formation by the introduction of the hyperbranched system into the polyfluorene backbone.

  • Low-dimensional (zero-dimensional (0-dim), 2-dimensional (2-dim)) nanoparticles, such as chalcogenide compound semiconductors, III-V semiconductors, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), II-VI semiconductors, nanocarbons, hybrid quantum dots (QDs), and perovskite QDs (PQDs), for which blue light emission has been observed, are reviewed. Current synthesis and device fabrication technologies as well as their prospective applications on next-generation quantum-dot-based light-emitting diodes are discussed.

  • New iridium complexes with 2-(3',5'-bis-trifluoromethylphenyl)-4-metoxypyridine [$(CF_3)_2ppyOMe$] were synthesized and characterized for blue phosphorescent materials. It was found that $Ir[(CF_3)_2ppyOMe]_2$(acac) gives blue emission at 471 nm with strong luminescence efficiency. We discuss the role played by electron withdrawing substituents and also how the ancillary ligand influences the emission peak.

  • High efficiency white organic light emitting diodes were fabricated by using an alignment free mask patterning method. Only red/green emission without any blue emission was observed in the red/green patterned region and blue emission was emitted in other area. A combination of the red/green and blue emission gave a high efficiency white emission. A maximum current efficiency of 30.7 cd/A and a current efficiency of 25.9 cd/A at 1000 cd/$m^2$ were obtained with a color coordinate of (0.38, 0.45).

  • Efficient deep-blue organic light-emitting diodes were demonstrated using 4,4'-bis(9-ethyl-3-carbazovinylene)-1,1'-biphenyl doped in double-emission layers (D-EMLs). The D-EML system, which consists of 2-methyl-9,10-di(2-naphthyl)anthracene and 1,4-(dinaphthalen-2-yl)-naphthalene as blue hosts, was employed to broaden the recombination zone and to ensure the good confinement of the holes and electrons. The optimized device showed a peak current efficiency of 4.47 cd/A, a peak external quantum efficiency of 4.09%, and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.16, 0.10).

  • The bilayer organic light-emitting diode using Al (DBM) $_3$ (DBM=Dibenzoylmethane) as an emitting material and poly (N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) as hole-transport material, emitted bright blue-green light instead of blue light. The blue-green emission is attributed to exciplex formation at the solid interface between Al (DBM) $_3$ and the hole-transport material. The exciplex formation was evidenced by the measurement of the photoluminescence spectra and lifetimes of Al (DBM) $_3$, PVK and an equimolar amount of mixture of Al (DBM) $_3$ and PVK.
