The objective of this study is to characterize a toxicity of Epimedii Herba (EH) in F344 rats and to find a dose levels for the 13 weeks toxicity study. EH is well known as medicinal herb in many Asian countries for traditional medicines of antibacterial and antiviral effects, estrogenic and antiestrogenic effects, and for treatment of osteoporosis, hypotensives, fatigue, kidney disorders, and related complications. However, the indispensable and basic information of toxicological evaluation of EH extract is insufficient to support its safe use. Therefore, we conducted toxicological evaluation of this drug in compliance with OECD and MFDS guideline in this study. The extract of EH was administered orally to F344 rats at dose levels of 0, 500, 1000, 2000, 3500, and 5000 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks. Each group was composed of 5 male and female rats. In this study, there were no treatment of EH-related adverse changes in clinical observations, mortality, body weights, food consumption, urinalysis, gross finding at necropsy, and organ weight examination. Total red blood cell count, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, total cholesterol, and phospholipid were decreased in males and females at 5000 mg/kg/day compared to the control animals. Mean corpuscular volume and reticulocyte counts were increased in males and females at 5000 mg/kg/day compared to control animals. Therefore, we recommend that dose level of 5000 mg/kg/day is a highest treatment group in 13-week EH extract exposure study for further toxicity assessment.
The nutritional status of 362 elderly men and women in Chung-bud area was evaluated in terms of their nutrient intakes, biochemical and anthrophometric measurements by interviews with questionnaires from August to October 1996. Mean intake of all nutrients except ascorbic acid did not meet the RDA for this sample. Protein, vit A, reboflavin, calcium were the most likely to be deficient on the basis of propotions of elderly consuming less than 75% of the RDA. The subjects nutrient intake was significantly affected by gender, marital status, number of family, family composition, educational level, pocket money, and region. Men in rural areas and women over 75 in urban areas were the most vulnerable groups with nutritional deficiency. According to serum biochemical indices, mean level of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, total protein, albumin and iron belonged to normal range but mean level of HDL showed below the normal range. More elderly men and women in urban areas showed a higher percentage of abormal level of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL than those in rural areas. More elderly men and women in rural areas had abnormal levels of RBC, Hematocrit and hemoglobin compared to those in urban areas. Mean height and weight of elderly men was 161.4cm and 56.2Kg, respectively and 149.1cm and 50.5kg for women. The elderly in rural areas were taller than those in urban areas but had less weight, MAC, TSF, MAMC. Mean BMI of this sample belonged to normal range. However, the elderly in rural areas had a higher rate of underweight and lower for overweight than those in urban areas. The elderly in urban areas had higher blood pressure than those in rural areas.
Gaucher's disease is an autosomal recessive disorder resulting from mutation at the glucocerebrosidase locus on chromosome 1q21. As a result, glucocerebroside accumulates principally in the phagocytic cells known as Gaucher cells. In our case, a five-year old girl was admitted with seven days' history of fever and abdominal distension. At physical examination the patient had hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory tests revealed a hemoglobin concentration of 2.8g/L: platelet counts of $23,000/{\mu}l$: normal range of white cell and differential counts, and negative Coombs' test. Liver enzymes were normal. For the evaluation of hepatosplenomegaly, fine needle aspiration was performed blindly against the palpable spleen. Wet-fixed hematoxylin and eosin-stained smears are made. The smears from the spleen showed predominantly macrophages with abundant cytoplasm and rather small, uniform, often eccentric nuclei with small nucleoli. The multinucleated cells were often found. The cytoplasm was pale, with more or less distinct fibrillarity. The cells had the characteristic appearance of Gaucher cells. Gaucher cells were also found in the tissue section from the liver, spleen and lymph node and the bone marrow aspirate. The diagnosis was later confirmed by determination of bela-glucosidase activity in peripheral blood leucocytes. Fine needle aspiration of the spleen is considered as a convenient procedure with a low complication rate for the diagnosis of lysosomal storage disease.
The purpose of this paper was to enable patients, who suffer from muscle damage. to return to their normal activities as soon as possible. With this in mind. this experiment was carried out to make an analysis of a variety of ingredients subjected to changes when muscle damage or muscle soreness was treated with aceclofenac, NSAID, and to find out what effect the anti-inflammation produced in relation to such symptoms. It made use of male rats (Sprague-Dawely) as subjects. It carried out two kinds of experiments: one was a preliminary experiment from March 15, 2001 to March 20, 2001 and the other was a main experiment from March 30, 2001 to April 15, 2001. Each group was composed of five rats. In case of DOMS. it worked with eight male adults from April 20. 2001 to April 30, 2001. It have come up with the following conclusions: 1. The leucocytes and erythrocytes of the experiment group were decreasing with the lapse of time in comparison with those of the contrast group. And a decrease in the number of hemoglobin had remarkably statistic significance (P<0.05). 2. Neutrophil, Lymphocyte and Monocyte decreased in 36, 24, 12 and 24 hours, respectively, which means that they had a significant difference(P<0.05). 3. CPK and LDH were reduced remarkably through the whole time slot in comparison with the contrast group, and had statistic significance(P<0.05). The findings above show that anti-inflammations cure bruises or damage or myalgia in a shorter period of time than the normal recovery of other treatment.
The influence of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax on the metabolism of hens are studied experimentally. The hens are fed with three dose levels of ethanol extract of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax for 24 months and for comparing, there are control hens and young control hens. The results are as follows. 1. Hemoglobin, hematocrit and erythrocyte sedimentation rate values of hens fed with Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax are not significantly. different from control group. There is tendency of decreasing of erythrocyte sedimentation rate with aging. 2. The serum total lipid values of hens fed with Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax have tendency of increment compared with control group, especially in large dose treated hens of Panax ginseng and it is statistically significant. The serum cholesterol levels of all treated hens seem to be increased without significance statistically. Serum triglyceride level is higher in young hens compared with aged, and Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax treated hens reveal much higher values than control hens. So the increment of triglyceride levels in the Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax treated hens may be mainly contribute to increment of total lipid content. 3. Long-term administration of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax seem to increase total serum protein content. Such increment seem to be due to the increment of globulin, especially gamma globulin, which is statistically significant in the large dose group of Acanthopanax. There are no differences of serum albumin levels of all the groups. 4. The blood glucose level and the glycogen content of liver and muscle have no difference among all the experimental groups. To summarize the results, the effects of Panax ginseng and Acanthopanax on the metabolism of hens have similarity in the majority of data of this experiment, and seem to be mainly influence to lipid and protein metabolisms by increasing serum triglyceride and globulin, especially gamma globulin.
The present study was conducted to determine the effect of cold stress on broiler performance and ascites susceptibility. Male chicks were obtained from a commercial strain of broiler breeders. The trial was divided into two treatments (control and cold stress groups). Ascites was induced in broiler chickens in the trial by exposing the chickens to low temperature (Ta) and by supplying a pelleted diet. The two experimental treatments consisted of: 1) Control group, $33.3^{\circ}C$ the $1^{st}$ wk, $30.2^{\circ}C$ the $2^{nd}$ wk, and $27.5^{\circ}C$ the $3^{rd}$ wk. 2) Cold stress group, $29.0^{\circ}C$ the $1^{st}$ wk, $26.4^{\circ}C$ the $2^{nd}$ wk, and $23.1^{\circ}C$ the $3^{rd}$ wk. From the end of the $3^{rd}$ wk all broilers were reared to 6 wk of age at a constant temperature of $21^{\circ}C$. There was significant difference in live BW during wk 1 to 5. The control group was consistently the heaviest; however, at 6 wk of age, both groups weighed the same. Body weight gain up to 3 wk was significantly decreased by cold stress. During wk 3 and 6 the chicks in the cold stress group had greater BW gain compared with the chicks in the control group. There were significant differences in mortality due to ascites between the groups. During wk 3 and 6 the cold stress group exhibited the most ascites mortality (9.52%) when compared with the control group (1.90%). At 5 wk of age cold stress condition caused significant changes in packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cell counts (RBC). Right ventricle weight was significantly heavier in the cold stress group than the control. There were also significant differences in right ventricle/total ventricle (RV/TV) ratios at 5 wk. the right ventricle/total ventricle ratios in the cold stress group was higher (0.25) than the control group (0.20). It was concluded that, fast growth and cold temperatures are the primary triggers for ascites during commercial broiler production.
This preliminary feeding trial was conducted to study the effects of different dietary selenium (Se) levels on growth performance and toxicity in juvenile black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli (Bleeker). Fish averaging $7.0{\pm}0.1g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) were fed one of the five semi-purified diets containing 0.21, 0.30, 0.52, 1.29 and 12.3 mg sodium selenite ($Na_2SeO_3$)/kg diet (Se 0.21, Se 0.30, Se 0.52, Se 1.29 or Se 12.3) for 15 weeks. After the feeding trial, weight gain (WG), feed efficiency (FE), specific growth rate (SGR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed Se 0.21, Se 0.30, Se 0.52 and Se 1.29 diets were not significantly different, however fish fed Se 12.3 diet showed significantly lower WG, FE, SGR and PER than those of fish fed the other diets (p<0.05). Fish fed Se 0.21, Se 0.30, Se 0.52, Se 1.29 and Se 12.3 diets showed no significant differences in hematocrit (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cells (RBC), however fish fed Se 12.3 diet showed lower values of PCV, Hb and RBC than those of fish fed the other diets. Histopathological lesions such as tubular necrosis and polycystic dilation of tubules in the kidney tissues were observed in fish fed Se 12.3 diet. Se was accumulated in a dose-dependent manner in the liver, kidney, muscle and gill tissues. Based on the results of this preliminary feeding trial, a dietary Se level of 0.21 mg $Na_2SeO_3/kg$ diet could be optimal for proper growth performances, and a dietary Se level of 12.3 mg $Na_2SeO_3/kg$ diet may ultimately be toxic to juvenile black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli.
This study was undertaken to investigate the nutrient intake, dietary behavior, perception of body image and iron deficiency of high school adolescent girls. The subjects were 463 high school girls in Inchon. This cross-sectional survey was conducted by questionnaires and data were analysed by SAS program. Nutrient intakes collected from 3 day-retails were analyzed by the Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis Program. The following anthropometric measurements were made on all participants height, weight, body fat (%), skinfold thirkness, subscapular skinfold thickness, mid-upper arm circumference and waist-hip circumference. Blood samples were obtained and analyzed for iron nutritional status. The mean obesity index of rural students were highest among students. However, over 18% of the urban and rural students belonged to the low-weight group. Proportions of skipping meals were most high in urban vocational students and the main reason was lack of time for meal. Most nutrient intakes of the students were below the RDA, in particular calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin B$_2$. Most of the students were concerned with body image and weight control. Also they were not satisfied with their body image. The mean fell hemoglobin and transferrin saturation of rural students were lowest among students. The total binding capacity of urban vocational student\ulcorner were Invest among students. Prevalence of iron deficiency was most high in urban general students when judged by Hb, MCV and serum ferritin. In conclusion, this study indicates that nutrient intake in the female high school students was considerably lower than RDA. They should also be notified that severe weight control is very harmful for health. And they had lower self -satisfaction for their body image and undesirable flood habits. Therefore, prefer nutrition education is required to maintain desirable flood habits and improve their iron status in female high school students.
In the previous studies, one of our author had observed the obligatory nitrogen losses through urine and feces in young Korean male adults, and utilization of whole egg protein in Korean young adults with ordinary intake of energy as a basic study for estimating protein requirements of Korean. This study has tried to determine the protein requirement and utilization when subjects ate the Korean mixed diet at the energy level of 45 kcal per Kg body weight per day. Six healthy Korean young female adults, college students, aged $20{\sim}25$ years old, and $45{\sim}61Kg$ of body weight participated as the study subjects. They were given isocaloric diets with four different protein levels for five days each successively. These diets contained protein levels of 0.45, 0.60, 0.75 and 0.90g per Kg of body weight per day, respectively. It was attempted to observe energy and protein intake, urinary and fecal nitrogen losses, true digestibility of protein, net protein utilization of protein in the body over last two days of period of eating each diet and nitrogen balances were calculated. The body weight change and hematological observation were also performed. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1) True digestibility of protein of Korean mixed diets ranged from 83.1% to 86.5% and the average of which was $84.7{\pm}1.7%$. 2) Net protein utilization rate of Korean mixed diets was range of 49% to 55% and the average of which was $52{\pm}3%.$ 3) The body weight of subjects were slightly increased and the values of hemoglobin and hematocrit of the blood were also little increased during the experimental periods of twenty days. 4) Protein requirements of Korean mixed diet with the energy level of 45 kcal/Kg body weight per day of Korean young female adults were estimated as 1.00g/Kg/day on this experimental condition.
The Nutritional Anaemia due to Iron Deficiency is by for the most common variety of anaemia throughout the world, affecting many women in their reproductive years, infant and children. In Korea, several studies reported that most of the female was iron-deficient and anemic. The present study was undertaken to investigate the nutritional anaemic state of the college girls in kwang-ju city area. Seventy-five college girls in child-bearing age (from 17 to 22 years old) were selected and practiced physical examination, hematological and parasitological tests. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1) The mean body height $(158.6{\pm}3.4cm)$higher tendency compared to other studies, but the mean body weight $(51.1{\pm}5.6kg)$was lighter. 2) The mean red blood cell number was $441.4{\pm}17.7\;10^4/mm^3$, and most of the subjects were included normal criteria. The average hemoglobin level was $12.5{\pm}0.7gm%$, and 25..7% of the subjects was anaemic. (l2gm% below) The average hematocrit value was $39.1{\pm}2.3%$ and 7.0% was anaemic. (below 37%) The average M C.H.C. value was $32.1{\pm}0.9%$, and 86.0% was anaemic. (32% below) These results showed that the incidence of anaemia was high and the anaemia was characterized by hypochromic in general. 3) The mean value of serum total protein and albumin were $6.6{\pm}0.4gm%$ and $4.2{\pm}0.4gm%$. These values were indicated total protein intake was insufficiency, but albumin value was comparatively high. 4) The infestation rate of helminthes was 25.4%, (Ascaris lumbricoides: 20.3%, Trichuris trichiura: 8.5%) and there was no hookworm infected case.
