The three dimensional, steady flows of blood and blood analogue fluids in the abdominal aortic bifurcation are simulated using the finite volume method. The objective of this investigation is to understand the generation and progression of site-specific atherosclerosis from a hydrodynamic point of view. Due to complexity of blood in conducting experimental study, aqueous polymer solutions are used as the substitutional fluids. For comparison purpose of the flow characteristics of blood and substitutional fluids, rheologically different fluids such as water soluble polymers of Carbopol-934 and Separan AP-273 are employed for the numerical simulation. In order to understand the role of hydrodynamics in the formation and development of atherosclerosis lesions flow velocities, pressures and shear stresses along the vessel are calculated for steady flows.
The blood flow characteristics have been closely related to various cardiovascular diseases, it is very important to predict them accurate enough in an efficient way. Thus, this paper proposes a one-dimensional spectral element model for the blood flow through blood vessels. The spectral element model is formulated by using the variational method. The nonlinear terms in spectral element model are all treated as the pseudo-force and an iterative solution method is applied in the frequency domain.

Catheters are used to measure translesional pressure gradients in the stenosed coronary arteries. Uses of catheters during coronary angioplasty cause flow obstructions. A narrowed flow cross section with catheter effectively introduced a tighter stenosis than the enlarged residual stenoses after balloon angiplasty. Catheters in blood vessels cause pressure gradient rise and blood flow drop during the measurements. In this study, three dimensional computer simulations are conducted to investigate the flow blockage effects due to the catheter obstructions during the coronary angioplasty. The computer simulation models are generated by the data, which are measured by coronary angiogram, and the blood is treated as non-Newtonian fluid. The velocity, pressure, and wall shear stress variations are observed for the estimate of damages of blood vessel. This study is also extended to investigate the effects of stenotic vessel size, and shape and catheter size and location.

The rupture of blood vessels in the human brain results in serious pathological and medical problems. In particular, brain hemorrhage and hematomas resulting from impact to the head are a major cause of death. As such, investigating the tensile behavior and rupture of blood vessels in the brain is very important from a medical point of view. In the present study, the tensile characteristics of the blood vessels in the human brain were analyzed using a quasi-static uniaxial tensile test, and the properties of the arteries and veins compared. In addition, to compare the tensile behavior and demonstrate the validity of the experimental results, blood vessels from the legs of pigs were also tested and analyzed. The overall results were in accordance with the histological structures and previous medical reports.
The main objective of the present study is to predict characteristics of three dimensional pulstitile flow by location of stenosis in blood vessel with the second order bifurcation. The present study simulates the incompressible non-Newtonian laminar blood flows using a Fluent V. 6.0. The Carreau model is employed as the constitutive equation for blood. The numerical simulation carried out at five cases without and with symmetry or asymmetry stenosis. It is found that the no stenosis and stenosis before first bifurcation do not have influence on flow at second bifurcated blood vessel. However, the stenosis after first biburcation has effect on flow at second bifurcated blood vessel.
Hematological, chemical and functional characteristics of porcine, chicken and duck blood were evaluated. A porcine blood sample showed the most abundant red blood cell, hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume and plasma protein content as well as its freeze-dried blood possessed the highest contents of protein, fat, Cu and Cr with the highest percentage of heme iron (p<0.05). Unlike porcine blood, chicken blood showed a well balance in some essential amino acids, specifically for a higher isoleucine content (p<0.05). Furthermore, it possessed the highest contents of carbohydrate, Zn and non-heme iron (p<0.05). The most rapid response to form a strong gel, especially at $70^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$, was found in chicken blood, followed by duck and porcine blood, respectively. The result of emulsion activity index (EAI) and emulsion stability index (ESI) at the low protein concentration indicated that chicken blood had the most superior emulsion properties (p<0.05). Regarding duck blood, it exhibited the highest content of Mg and Mn (p<0.05). Moreover, duck blood had similar foaming properties to porcine blood in which they showed higher values than chicken blood (p<0.05). Specific characteristics of blood were therefore diminished by animal species in which this information could be used as food supplementation or product development based on their potential applications.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of Dandelion (Taraxzcum coreanum) supplementation on milk yield, milk composition and blood characteristics in lactating dairy cows. Eight lactating dairy cows were divided into two groups (control: TMR supplementation, treatment: TMR with Dandelion supplementation). The milk yield, milk fat, lactose, solids not fat (SNF) and somatic cells counts (SCC) were not significantly different between the control group and the treatment group, whereas milk protein, milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and free fat acid (FFA) were significantly higher in the treatment group compared to the control (p<0.05). The blood components of the treatment group were compared with those of the control group and only aspartate aminotransferase (AST) appeared significantly high (p<0.05). The other blood components were not significantly different in the two groups. Blood corpuscle components in the groups were not significantly different. Especially, all blood corpuscle components in the treatment group were within the normal range. However, the white blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes (LYM) and hematocrits (HCT) in the control group exceeded the normal range. Based on the above results, the addition of Dandelion to feed increased milk protein, MUN and FFA, but did not significantly affect the composition of the blood and corpuscle in Holstein milking cows.
Experimental and numerical studies for three-dimensional pulsatile flows are conducted to investigate the flow characteristics in the bifurcated tubes. Velocity measurements in experimental study were made by both Pulsed Doppler Ultrasound(PDU) machine and Laser Doppler Anemometer(LDA) system. Glycerin is used for experimental study. Experimental results are used to verify the results of the numerical simulation. Flow characteristics of Newtonian fluid and blood in the bifurcated tubes under the steady and pulsatlie flows are numerically investigated. Finite volume method is employed for three-dimensional numerical simulations. Blood is considered as a non-Newtonian fluid and the constitutive equation of blood is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical analyses are focused on the flow patterns for various branch angles ranging from 30.deg. to 90.deg. and diameter ratios such as 1.0, 0.8, and 0.6. Pulsatile flow characteristics of blood are compared with those of Newtonian fluid. Parameter effects on axial velocity, pressure and wall shear stress distribution along the bifurcated tubes are discussed in terms of the branch angle, diameter ratio, and Reynolds number.
In general, the physiological systems have shown nonlinear complex phenomena. This study analyzes nonlinear characteristics of the flow of peripheral blood vessel dynamics in physiological systems using chaos theory. We performed this study by means of several quantity methods and power spectrum. The quantity methods are a phase space reconstruction and a poincare's map. And the power spectrum method is a conventional linear analysis. Experimental data have been acquired from examining 10 diabetic patients, and 10 control subjects in initial stable state. In acquisition experminetal data, we anlysized the differences of nonlinear characteristics between diabetic group and control group. The results of quality analysis methods showed the flow of peripheral blood vessel had the nonlinear and chaotic characteristics, screening a strange attractor on reconstructed phase space. In conclusion, the flow dynamics of peripheral blood vessel had a chaotic behavior of nonlinear dynamic systems, dynamic system, and differences of characteristic of nonlinear dynamic system.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the ice-cream containing mulberry leaves on glucose levels in blood and on sensory characteristics. Mulberry leaves were treated with sodium hydrogencarbonate (NaHCO3) to remove the fresh green note out of dried mulberry powder with ball mill. The recovery rate of dried mulberry leaf powder was 28.9% from fresh mulberry leaves. The points of ice-cream with (treatment 2 : milk-fatty 23%) and without (treatment 7 : coconut butter 9.5%) milk-fatty in the sensory characteristics were 8.31 and 8.47, respectively, of 9.00 as a full point. The range of age of volunteers taken part in the glucose level test were 21∼25 years old. The glucose levels in blood were measured before and after taking up ice-cream. In case of ice-cream with vanilla, the glucose levels increased 27.8%, while those in the up take of ice-cream with mulberry powder decreased 1.6%. In conclusion, the present study has demonstrated that ice-cream containing mulberry leaf powder has an effect to decrease blood glucose levels after the application.
