  • To those who spend most time within a room, comfortable indoor environment is a very critical element to job performance and health. The comfort technology, which is for enhancing comfort in human living, relates with various factors to ensure human activities efficient, comfortable, safe and satisfactory. Experiments were performed in environmental chamber. Experimental conditions were combinations from three temperatures of 18, 22 and 26C, and two relative humidity levels of 45 and 60%. Air-flow was controlled to 0.1m/s through the experiment. Four male and four female university students participated in the experiments. They had normal blood pressure and their body temperature was under $37^{\circ}C$. From the experiments for evaluating thermal sensation to the air-heating conditions, relationships among TSV, CSV, $SET^*$, PMV were analyzed. Results can be summarized as followings; Thermal neutrality $SET^*$ of man and female was $24.8^{\circ}C$. In air-heating condition, $SET^*$ values for thermal comfort zone were $23.0{\sim}26.5^{\circ}C$. These values were higher than the values from ASHRAE.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between glucose control, diabetes self-care and depression in community dwelling older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: The cross-sectional survey data of 148 older adults at a senior center were analyzed in this study. We collected data on diabetes self-care, depression, and demographics by face-to-face interviews. Blood samples for HbA1C were obtained from the participants. Results: The average duration of diabetes for the participants was $10.6{\pm}9.31$ years. Fifty percent of the participants had HbA1c higher than 7.0% (mean 7.179%). The level of diabetes self-care was related to depression (r=-.225, p<.01). HbA1c was positively related with the duration of diabetes diagnosis (r=.224, p<.01). The only sub-dimension of diabetes self-care that was related to depression was exercise (r=-.307, p<.01). Conclusion: Only half of the community dwelling older adults with type 2 diabetes had an optimal level of diabetes control. Supported by the evidence, the longer the duration of diabetes since the initial diagnosis, the poorer the glucose control was. Identification and intervention for depression in people with diabetes should be considered to improve diabetes self-care, especially to perform more exercise.

  • In this study, we structuralized the diagnostic indices used for pattern identification (PI) of stroke, and suggested an AHP method to obtain the weights of PI indices. AHP of the subjects under consistency ratio 0.1 showed that the critical indices for stroke PI consists of 9 for Qi-deficiency, 13 for Phlegm/dampness, 7 for blood stagnation, 12 for Yin-deficiency and 16 for Fire/heat. Furthermore, AHP analysis rendered the weights of indices of each PI that will be useful for oriental medical experts to perform objective PI.

  • Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is a chronic disease of the skin marked by groups of watery, itch blisters. It is characterized by urticarial plaques and blisters on the elbows, buttocks, and knees, although other sites may also be involved. The ingestion of gluten (the proteins gliadin and prolamin contained in wheat, rye, oats, and barley) triggers an immune system reponse that deposits a substance, IgA (immonuglobin A), under the top layer of skin. IgA is present in affected as well as unaffected skin. DH is a hereditary autoimmune disease linked with celiac disease. Treatment for DH is twofold. (1) Remove the cause: gluten. (2) Suppress the skin response with drugs such as Dapsone or some other sulphones. The latter is the most common treatment used as it is rapidly relieves the itch. However there are some side effects associated with these medications and they need to be taken under medical monitoring with blood tests to detect side effects. Recently, we experienced a DH and that was successfully treated by the herbal medication and external therapy. The medications taken by the patient were yongdamsagantanggami and external therapy were gosam and gumunhwa. So we report this case with a bief review of the oriental medical and medical literatures.

  • Urine production is vital for the removal of certain waste products produced by metabolism in the body and for the maintenance of homeostasis in the body. The kidneys produce urine by the following three precisely regulated processes: filtration, reabsorption, and secretion. Urine is composed of water, certain electrolytes, and various waste products that are filtered out of the blood through the glomeruli. The physical features of urine are evaluated carefully to detect any abnormal findings that may indicate underlying diseases in the genitourinary system. A change in urine color may indicate an underlying pathological condition, although many of the causes of abnormal urine color are benign effects of medications and foods. A characteristic and specific odor may be the result of a metabolic disease rather than a concentrated specimen or a simple urinary tract infection. Although transient changes in urine output and nocturia are usually benign conditions, persistent abnormal findings require further workup, with a thorough medical history taking. This article presents many of the conditions that physicians may encounter and will help them in the diagnosis and in establishing a treatment plan.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of swimming training and cholesterol diet on the activation of hepatic antioxidant enzymes and serum lipid in Sprague Dawley rats(24 weeks of age). They were divided into five groups which were made up of normal-diet detraining group(C), 2% cholesterol-diet detraining group(CC), 2% cholesterol-diet swimming training groups which were classified according to their training time(CSA: 12min, CSB:8min, CSC:4min). They were given normal diet for the first 6weeks and then, separated normal-dietary and 2% cholesterol-dietary for 14 weeks. During these periods, 10 weeks’ swimming training was performed after 4 weeks later. And then we analyzed blood and liver by decapitating those rats. Swimming training showed a tendency to increase the activation of GSH-peroxidase, Nonprotein-SH and malondialdehyde, and decrease total- cholesterol, LSL-C/HDL-C and VLDL significantly. Whereas, cholesterol diet which has no training showed decrease the activation of hepatic antioxodant enzymes, and increase total-cholesterol and LDL-C/HDL-C absolutely. These results suggest that swimming training should stimulate the activation of hepatic antioxidant enzymes and decrease total-cholestrol even if they had cholesterol diet.

  • Antioxidant activity of dropwort fermented extract (DFE) was measured according to fermentation period, and liver protective effects were examined using Sprague-Dawley rats. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents as well as DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities increased up to 60~80 days and then decreased slightly. Proper fermentation time for DFE was more than 60 days and less than 80 days. Administration of alcohol to rats for 10 days at 10 mL/kg/day raised serum AST, ALT, total cholesterol, and triglyceride (TG) levels, which were then lowered by DFE and sugar liquid with the same soluble solids. While sugar liquid increased the blood lipid profile, especially TG levels, DFE had no effect due to its antioxidant activity. When TBARS content of the DFE group in liver tissue significantly decreased in a concentration-dependent manner compared to that of the ALH group (p<0.05). Liver damage was recovered by DFE treatment and was confirmed by hamatoxylin-eosin staining. These results suggest that DFE has a protective effect against alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity in SD rats.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Serum ferritin levels are significantly increased after menopause and greatly affect women's health. The aim of this study was to investigate the dietary and non-dietary factors associated with high ferritin levels in postmenopausal women. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Among adult women in 2010-2012, qualified postmenopausal women (n = 3880) were separated into quartiles of serum ferritin. The variable differences among the quartiles of ferritin were determined using either procsurvey chi-square test (${\chi}^2$-test) among categorical variables, or GLM (Generalized Linear Model) among continuous variables. The odds ratio for high ferritin in relation to dietary factors was also determined using procsurvery logistic analysis. RESULTS: Age, obesity, drinking habit, and blood glucose levels were found to be significant indicators of high serum ferritin level after adjusting for all confounding factors. Among the food groups, grain, milk, vegetable, and seaweed intakes were significantly associated with high ferritin levels, but after adjusting for all confounding factors, only grains and vegetables remained significant factors. Among the nutrient groups, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C intake were significant factors, but after adjustment, none of the nutrient groups analyzed were associated with a high risk of ferritin. CONCLUSION: Age, obesity, drinking habit, and glucose levels, as well as inadequate intakes of grains and vegetables, were found to be significantly associated with high serum ferritin levels in postmenopausal Korean women.

  • Ginseng is a shade-loving perennial herb that is cultivated mainly in Korea, Japan, and China. The ginseng root has been used as a tonic remedy, and its antidiabetic activity has been demonstrated as early as 1920s. Although wild ginseng was anecdotally thought to be superior to cultivated ginseng as far as pharmacological properties were concerned, there have been no prior reports on the antidiabetic effect of wild ginseng. In this study, we investigated the preventative anti-diabetic and anti-obese effects of wild ginseng ethanol extract (WGEE). In the preventive experiment, WGEE co-administered with a high fat diet significantly inhibited body weight gain, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, and free fatty acid levels in a dose dependent manner. WGEE-treated mice at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg improved the insulin resistance index by 55% and 61% compared to the high fat diet (HFD) control, respectively. Diameters of white and brown adipocytes were also decreased by 62% and 46% in the WG500-treated group compared to those in HFD fed control mice. Taken together, WGEE has potential as a preventive agent for type 2 diabetes mellitus (and possibly obesity) and deserves clinical trial in the near future.
