  • This paper presents a genetic programming based evolutionary strategy for on-line adaptive learnable evolvable hardware. genetic programming can be useful control method for evolvable hardware for its unique tree structured chromosome. However it is difficult to represent tree structured chromosome on hardware, and it is difficult to use crossover operator on hardware. Therefore, genetic programming is not so popular as genetic algorithms in evolvable hardware community in spite of its possible strength. We propose a chromosome representation methods and a hardware implementation method that can be helpful to this situation. Our method uses context switchable identical block structure to implement genetic tree on evolvable hardware. We composed an evolutionary strategy (or evolvable hardware by combining proposed method with other's striking research results. Proposed method is applied to the autonomous mobile robots cooperation problem to verify its usefulness.

  • Recently, the Internet of Things is attracting attention as an important key technology of the 4th Industrial Revolution, and SW education using physical computing is suggested as a good alternative to supplement the problems raised by beginners in programming education. Among the many teaching tools that can be used for physical computing education, MODI is a modular manufacturing tool that anyone can easily assemble like Lego. MODI is a teaching tool that can improve learners' achievement by linking a self-linked block-type code editor called MODI Studio to lay the foundation for programming in a relatively small amount of time and immediately check the results in person. In this paper, a physical computing education method using MODI was designed to be applied to basic programming courses for programming beginners and applied to after-school classes for middle school students. As a result, it was found that students' interest and satisfaction were much higher in physical computing classes using MODI than in text-based programming classes. It can be seen that physical computing education that allows beginners to see and feel the results in person is more effective than grammar-oriented text programming, and it can have a positive effect on improving basic programming skills by increasing students' participation.

  • Formal specification plays important roles in guaranteeing software safety of safety-critical systems such as nuclear power plant's digital control systems. We had developed a technique [1] which synthesizes Function Block Diagram(FBD) programs from NuSCR formal requirements specifications, but it did not be used widely as it had no automatic tool support. FBD is one of the programming languages for Programmable Logic Controllers(PLC) based system. This paper introduces a CASE tool, NuSCRtoFBD, developed to automate the synthesis procedure. The CASE tool NuSCRtoFBD can reduce a number of errors occurred in the process of manual FBD programming.

  • Recently, the artificial intelligence(AI) is used in various environments in life, and research on this is being actively conducted in education. In this paper, we designed a Design-Based Research(DBR)-based AI programming education program and analyzed the application of the program for the improvement of understanding of AI in elementary school. In the artificial intelligence education program in elementary school, we should considerthat itshould be used in conjunction with software education through programming activities, rather than creating interest through simple AI experiences. The designed education program reflects the collaborative problem-solving procedures following the DBR process of analysis - design - execution - redesign, allowing the real-world problem-solving activities using AI experiences and block-type programming language. This paper also examined the examples of education programs to improve understanding of AI by using Machine Learning for Kids and to draw implications for developing and operating such a program.

  • Elementary students are studying software training to teach coding education using text-based languages such as Python. In general, these higher-level languages support learning activities in combination with a kits for physical computing or various programming languages, in contrast to block-coding programming languages. In this study, we conducted a coding project based on computational thinking using the ARCS model to overcome the difficulties of text-based language. The results of the experiment show that students are generally confident and interested in programming. Especially, the understanding of repetition, function, and object was high in the change of computational thinking power, so this trend is believed to be due to the use of text-based languages and the Python module.

  • Team-based programming methods are widely applied to solve various difficulties that pre-service teachers experience in the programming lessons. To prepare effective collaboration strategies necessary for them, it is necessary to analyze various collaborative factors that affect learners' programming competencies. Therefore, in this article, a questionnaire survey was conducted by dividing learners' collaboration factors into individual and team competencies, and the relationship between learners' programming competencies was analyzed. As a result of the verification, the program design competency showed significant results in all elements of the learner's personal competency, team techniques such as data sharing skills necessary for collaboration, and team collaboration. It was analyzed that an individual's understanding of learning and team collaboration influenced the program implementation competency. In addition, the group with relatively high team technique showed significant differences in programming competence, interest, and satisfaction. Accordingly, by linking meaningful factors related to individual and team competencies according to the programming process, a collaborative strategy practically necessary for pre-service teachers was suggested.

  • A multibit DRAM BIST methodology reducing redundancy programming overhead has been proposed. It is capable of counting and locating faulty bits simultaneously with the test. If DRAM cells are composed of n blocks generally, the proposed BIST can detect the state of no error, the location of faulty bit block if there is one error and the existence of errors in more than two blocks, which are n + 2 states totally, with only n comparators and an 3 state encoder. Based on the proposed BIST methodology, the testing scheme which can detect the number and locations of faulty bits with the errors in two or more blocks, can be easily implemented. Based on performance evaluation, the test and redundancy programming time of 64MEG DRAM with 8 blocks is reduced by 1/750 times with 0.115% circuit overhead.

  • To determine the educational effects of writing to describe using Entry, block-based programming language, we instructed first year students at the national university of education on these activities for four weeks and analyzed the changes in their writing perception and attitude, ability of descriptive writing, computational thinking and learner's competencies. As a result, writing to describe using Entry did not affect students' writing perception and attitude change. However, the experimented students who wrote to describe using Entry became acquainted with the way of writing to describe, and improved their ability to describe objects. In addition, the computational thinking and critical thinking improved. Based on these results, it is hopped to be used as a basic material for expanding the education of descriptive writing using programming languages.

  • Open source software allows revising and adding a new idea on them as well as debugging themselves. The open source software can be utilized as various educational programs as well as development of a commercial software products using them. MIT App Inventor, one of the block-based visual programming environments for education, supports building a local server and even revision of the platform itself by providing its own source codes. In this paper we implement App Inventor open sources on the local server. Especially we present how to revise and implement a new App Inventor platform reflecting their own requirements in schools or educational institutes and how to build a local server operating the revised App Inventor platform. They can provide more interactive educational environments to students and improve educational satisfaction through the active customizing of the platform itself such as adding new programming block components requested by students.

  • Recently, as user feedback such as social reading become active, demand has been increased on e-book contents making which is based on user feedback. However, to reflect the user feedback onto the e-book, direct coding is required, which was difficult to the author who was not good at programming. To resolve this problem, Block assembly style feedback editor system, using Blockly was developed. This editor enables to reflect the user feedback by area allocation, component allocation, block editing, and code generating insertion, contrary to the existing way of programming realization in which direct coding was required for input, processing and output separately. This system was developed by using HTML. Javascript, PHP, and Codeigniter. Block editing is enabled to do provision and assembly of blocks by Blockly. The function of code generation & insertion allows to insert the Library function code. Through this system, the general users who are not capable of coding also can reflect feedback without doing actual coding.
