In a motion estimation method for use in encoding a moving picture, a full-pixel motion vector is estimated by stochastically sampling a pixel to be processed in a predetermined-sized block of a previous frame or a next frame as a reference frame for each of a plurality of equal-sized blocks in a current frame. Then, a half-pixel motion vector is estimated based on the full-pixel motion vector. Accordingly, both the calculation amount and the calculation time required for the motion estimation are effectively reduced. Further, it can be prevented that the hardware becomes complicated. .
This paper presents a power-efficient hardware realization for a motion estimation technique that is based on the full-search block matching algorithm (FSBMA). The considered input is the quarter common intermediate format of digital video. The mean of absolute difference (MAD) is the distortion criteria employed for the block matching process. The conventional architecture considered for the hardware realization of FSBMA is that of the shift register-based 2-D systolic array. For this architecture, a conservative approximation technique is adapted to eliminate unnecessary MAD computations involved in the block matching process. Upon introducing the technique to the conventional architecture, the power and complexity of its implantation is reduced, while the accuracy of the motion vector extracted from the block matching process is preserved. The proposed architecture is verified for its functional specifications. A performance evaluation of the proposed architecture is carried out using parameters such as power, area, operating frequency, and efficiency.
In this paper we propose a new frame rate up conversion scheme which is used to overcome the motion blur problem of liquid crystal display caused by its slow response. The conventional bilateral motion estimation method which is mainly used in the frame rate up conversion scheme has a drawback that it cannot find true motion vector if there are blocks with simple texture in the search range. To solve this problem, a texture adaptive bilateral motion estimation method that increases cost value of block with simple texture is proposed. Also a motion estimation scheme that utilizes neighboring motion vector effectively is proposed to reduce computation time required to estimate motion. Since the proposed scheme does not apply all available motion vectors within the search range, the execution time of frame rate up conversion can be reduced dramatically. Experimental results show that the interpolated frame image quality of the proposed method is improved in subjective as well as objective view point compared with that of the conventional method.
MASF is a kind of temporal filter proposed for noise reduction and temporal band limitation. MASF uses motion vectors to extract temporal information in spatial domain. Therefore, inaccurate motion information causes some distortions in MASF operation. Currently, bilinear interpolation after MBA(Block Matching Algorithm) is used for the motion estimation sheme of MASF. But, this method results in unreliable estimation when the object in image sequence has larger movement than the maximum displacement assumed in BMA or the input images are severely corrupted with noise. In order to solve this problem, we propose a hierarchical motion estimation algorithm for MASF. Experimental results show that the proposed method produces reliable output under large motion and noisy situations.
Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is the most recent video coding standard, which had been developed by Joint Video Expert Team (JVET). It can improve significant coding performance compared to the previous standard, namely High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Although VVC can achieve the powerful coding performance, it requires the tremendous computational complexity of VVC encoder. Especially, affine motion compensation (AMC) was adopted the block-based 4-parameter or 6-parameter affine prediction to overcome the limit of translational motion model while VVC require the cost of higher encoding complexity. In this paper, we proposed the early termination of AMC that determines whether the affine motion estimation for AMC is performed or not. Experimental results showed that the proposed method reduced the encoding complexity of affine motion estimation (AME) up to 16% compared to the VVC Test Model 17 (VTM17).
