  • Underground structures usually consist of rock masses or concretes which can be cracked or have cracks. This study aims to develop an analysis program which can deal with the effect of discontinuous behavior due to those cracks using the block theory. It is assumed that rock masses form blocks along the discontinuity lines, and deformation within the block is relatively small. The behavior of discontinuity plane of the structures is divided into sliding along the discontinuity plane. separation of discontinuity by tensile force, and degradation of asperity angle of discontinuity plane by external force with sliding of rock Basses. These behaviors are implemented using constitutive relation and relevent load-displacement relation defined through normal and shear stiffnesses. Time varying displacements and block velocities are calculated by explicit time stepping algorithm. The effect of rock supports including rockbolts is also considered, and the tending effects which occurs in relatively thin lining is also considered.

  • In this paper, we propose a motion estimation algorithm for the discontinuity blocks. The algorithm uses sub-SAD value (i.e. the sum of absolute difference for a quarter of a block) to identify the discontinuity region, and produces additional motion vectors for these sub-blocks if necessary. We show with experimental results that, in comparison with some conventional motion estimation algorithms, the proposed algorithm achieves quality enhancement for the sequences with discontinuity blocks, and also shows the same computational quantity as to normal algorithms for sequences with less discontinuity.

  • In this paper, we propose an Overlapped Block and an Hanning Window to prevent a Block Discontinuity when we use an algorithm to eliminate ringing artifact which is based on a block structure. The algorithm to eliminate ringing artifact operates with a block structure and 24-RGB data and is based on a modified K-means algorithm. The proposed overlapped block method is piled up one on another per an half of the size of unit-block when an input image is split into several unit-blocks. Therefore, we define a data unit as the unit-block of the block size, $16{\times}16$ pixels. We reconstruct the processed data units into the original form of input image by using an isotropic form of Hanning Window. Finally, in order to evaluate the performance of the abovementioned algorithms, we compare three image, an input image with ringing artifact, an image result obtained by conventional method (non-overlapped), and an image result obtained the proposed method.

  • This paper proposes a method to improve video quality on images that have blocking artifacts at block boundary. Block image transform coding suffers from blocking artifact that is a main cause of degrading video quality because of the quantization error of transform coefficients in quantization process. filtering and DPCM for DC components have been widely used to reduce blocking artifact. Recently, lots of works focus on the technique that minimizes block effects using discontinuity of block boundaries. In this paper, image blurring in decoding stage is improved by adding compensation factor to each transformed blocks so that discontinuity of block boundaries can be decreased. The compensation factor is applied on each block without much loss of edge components.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach for reducing the blocking artifact that is one of drawbacks of the block-based Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) without introducing additional information or significant blurring. We modify the inter-block discontinuity minimization technique to preserve edges within a block as well as to reduce visible block boundaries. The homogeneity of each block is decided by the threshold value reated to Q-factor, which is included in a JPEG as well as MPEG streams. The quantization error is estimated by minimizing the discontinuity, which is weighted in proportion to block discontinuity and added to each pixel in the block to compensate block artifacts. The proposed algorithm reconstructs images which have less noticeable block boundaries from a subjective viewpoit without anyconstraints.

  • The error concealment is very useful technique for real-time communication, such as video conference. In this paper. we propose the error concealment technique to minimize discontinuity of block boundary in consideration of the fact that human visual system is sensitive to discontinuity. The error concealment for each loss block is performed by extended block matching method based on gradient difference. In the simulation result, performance improvement for the proposed technique is on the average 1.32㏈ in comparison with the conventional technique.

  • Previous analytical models for key blocks have been based on the assumption of infinite persistent discontinuities. In this paper, a key block analysis method considering the finite persistence of discontinuities is proposed as a stability evaluation method in tunnel constructions, and then applied to an actual example site. Three-dimensional rock block identification with consideration of the persistence of discontinuities is performed by using discontinuity disk model. The removability and stability analyses of rock blocks formed by the identification method are performed. The identification method can handle convex and concave shape blocks. In order to demonstrate the applicability of this developed numerical method to the stability evaluation in tunnel constructions, the analytical results are examined and compared one another.

  • In this paper, we propose a content-based MPEG transcoding method using a discontinuity feature in the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) domain. A DCT block is transcoded differently depending on the height of dominant discontinuity within a block. In the experiment, we show the result that the video quality of content-based transcoding is better than that of a constant cut-off method and the processing time of the adaptive method is much faster compared with the pixel domain methods in the same bandwidth.

  • One of the standard procedures of discontinuity survey is the joint set identification from the population of field orientation data. Discontinuity set identification is fundamental to rock engineering tasks such as rock mass classification, discrete element analysis, key block analysis. and discrete fracture network modeling. Conventionally, manual method using contour plot had been widely used for this task, but this method has some short-comings such as yielding subjective identification results, manual operations, and so on. In this study, the method of discontinuity set identification using genetic algorithm was introduced, but slightly modified to handle the orientation data. Finally, based on the genetic algorithm, we developed a FORTRAN program, Genetic Algorithm based Clustering(GAC) and applied it to two different discontinuity data sets. Genetic Algorithm based Clustering(GAC) was proved to be a fast and efficient method for the discontinuity set identification task. In addition, fitness function based on variance showed more efficient performance in finding the optimal number of clusters when compared with Davis - Bouldin index.
