Potato late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is one of the important diseases in potato cultivation areas. Though the incidence of late blight was depend on the inoculums and climatic condition In each fields, the foliar blight was reached to 100% under the severe disease pressure condition in 2003. Outbreak of foliar blight was concentrated from May and July and evaluation of ten fungicides to control of late blight was made at Daekwallryoung area in potato fields. Based on the company recommendation, those fungicides were applied by a sprayer at the recommended rates on a weekly application schedule. Effect of ten fungicides on foliar blight was based on area under disease progress curve (AUDPC). Across all fungicides was reduced by 77% in AUDPC and dimethomorph was reduced by 92% in AUDPC during the same period, respectively. Those fungicide were inhibited the mycelial growth of isolate with different rate in chemical amended medium and several fungicides were completely limited the growth of isolate.
Isolation and pathogenicity of Fusarium spp. from mulberry shoot rot and severity of diseases which were known as bacterial blight were examined on four mulberry varieties in Suwon, Kongju and Chuncheon, A symptom of mulberry shoot rot was initiated long brown spot on young leaves and shoots. It was developed into dark brown spot and produced white mycelia and spores on the diseased symptoms. A symptom of bacterial blight showed leaf rolling and water soaking spot and produced bacterial ooze on leaf and shoot However later stage of upper two types of symptom was hardly distinguished. Severities of shoot rot and bacterial blight were 7.5% and 4.4% in Suwon, respectively. Isolation of Fusarium spp. on shoot rot symptoms was highter than that on bacterial blight symptoms, but isolation of Pseudomonas spp. was higher on bacterial blight symptoms. Trends of pathogenicity of Fusarium spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were similar to inoculation works, and isolations of pathogenic Fusarium spp. from center of symptom was higher than that from 30cm of symptom of all samples in three cultivation areas. Disease severities of shoot rot on variety of Kaeryangppong were 13.9%, 15.9% and 17.2% in Suwon, Kongju and Chuncheon, respectively. However variety of Cheongolppong was highly resistant to shoot rot disease in three cultivation areas.
After transitioning from periodic to model-based control policy for fire blight blossom infection, it is crucial to provide the timing of field application with easy and accurate information. To assess the risk of blossom infection, Maryblyt was employed in 31 sites across apple-producing regions nationwide, including areas prone to fire blight outbreaks, from 2021 to 2023. In 2021 and 2023, two and seven sites experienced Blossom Infection Risk-Infection warning occurrences among 31 sites, respectively. However, in 2022, most of the sites observed Blossom Infection Risk-Infection from April 25 to 28, highlighting the need for blossom infection control. For the comparison between the two model-based control approaches, we established treatment 1, which involved control measures according to the Blossom Infection Risk-Infection warning and treatment 2, aimed at maintaining the Epiphytic Infection Potential below 100. The analysis of control values between these treatments revealed that treatment 2 was more effective in reducing Blossom Infection Risk-Infection and the number of days with Epiphytic Infection Potential above 100, with respective averages of 95.6% and 93.0% over the three years. Since 2022, the implementation of the K-Maryblyt system and the deployment of Automated Weather Stations capable of measuring orchard weather conditions, with an average of 10 stations per major apple fire blight county nationwide, have taken place. These advancements will enable the provision of more accurate and timely information for farmers based on fire blight models in the future.
A fungus associated with gray blight on tea plant (Camellia sinensis) was identifed as Pestalotiopsis theae based on the mycological characteristics. Mycelial growth on potato dextrose agar and size and shape of conidia of P. theae were similar to those of P. longiseta, but P. theae was different from P. longiseta in the color of three median cells and the number of apical appendages. Artificial inoculation of conidial suspension or mycelial mats on the wounded leaves and shoots of healthy plants induced the same disease, respectively. The Korean native variety was relatively. The Korean native variety was relatively more resistat to P. theae than a Japanese variety‘Yabukita’which has bee recently introduced and planted in large areas of southern parts of Korea. Here, we report the report the first record of gary blight caused by P. theae on tea plant in Korea.
These experiments were conducted at field and green house in order to screen the resistant sesame varieties to Phytopthora nicotianae var. parasitica. and to ascertain the infection conditions of Corynespora cassiicola at different temperatures, soil moistures and leaf stages. Most of varieties studied in this experiment were very susceptible to the Phytopthora blight. Orotall, Suweon 7, Suweon 27 and Jochiweon were resistant to the disease. PI280795 and IS103 showed a tendency to be morderately resistant. The infected areas by Corynespora leaf blight were 15% in Kwangeui and 25% in Kimpo variety at high temperature condition of 3$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The infection areas were 50% in Kwangeui and 70% in Kimpo variety at low temperature condition of 17$^{\circ}C$. These results indicate that the development of the leaf blight was highly increased at low temperature. The infection areas by the Corynespora were 55% in Kwangeui and 80% in Kimpo at wet soil moisture condition, and 10% in Kwageui and 15% in Kimpo at dry condition, respectively. The infection of the leaf blight was highly increased at 6 leaf stage and flowering date compared to at 10 and 20 leaf stages. The infection ratios were 20% at 6 leaf stage and 52.5% at flowering date, respectively.
In this study, the succession and stand dimension attributes related to the disaster prevention function of Pinus thunbergii coastal forests were examined after damage from Diplodia tip blight. In 2015, 101 years after the Taisho eruption, field investigations were performed on the vegetation, soil thickness, and pH of surface soil of P. thunbergii coastal forests in western Sakurajima (Hakamagoshi plot) and Taisho lava flows in southeastern Sakurajima (Seto plot). The Hakamagoshi plot had more woody plant species with larger basal areas than that in the Seto plot. The mean age and height, maximal age and height of plant species, and H/D ratio were all larger in the Hakamagoshi plot than in the Seto plot. These results may be explained by the relatively smaller effect of volcanic ash and gas on forests in the Hakamagoshi plot compared to the Seto plot, resulting in a more suitable environment for many plant species. Although P. thunbergii coastal forests in Sakurajima are currently recovering from damages owing to Diplodia tip blight, there has not yet been a sufficient recovery compared to the results from a 1997 study. Furthermore, the results of assessment based on the H/D ratio and abundance of trees in P. thunbergii forests indicate that both regions are not yet effective in disaster prevention. Thus, it is necessary to establish Pinus trees, which can adjust to harsh environments like coastal areas and are resistant to volcanic ash and gas, to enhance the disaster prevention function of P. thunbergii coastal forests in volcanic regions. It may also be helpful to establish coastal forests with ectotrophic mycorrhizal fungi and organic matter coverage. Additionally, it is necessary to ensure the continuous maintenance of stand density and soil quality, and further develop efforts to prevent Diplodia tip blight and promote forest recovery.
To preventively control fire blight in apple trees and determine policies regarding field monitoring, the Maryblyt ver. 7.1 model (MARYBLYT) was evaluated in the cities of Chungju, Jecheon, and Eumseong in Korea from 2015 to 2020. The number of blossom infection alerts was the highest in 2020 and the lowest in 2017 and 2018. And the common feature of MARYBLYT blossom infection risks during the flowering period was that the time of BIR-High or BIR-Infection alerts was the same regardless of location. The flowering periods of the trees required to operate the model varied according to the year and geographic location. The model predicts the risk of "Infection" during the flowering periods, and recommends the appropriate times to control blossom infection. In 2020, when flower blight was severe, the difference between the expected date of blossom blight symptoms presented by MARYBLYT and the date of actual symptom detection was only 1-3 days, implying that MARYBLYT is highly accurate. As the model was originally developed based on data obtained from the eastern region of the United States, which has a climate similar to that of Korea, this model can be used in Korea. To improve field utilization, however, the entire flowering period of multiple apple varieties needs to be considered when the model is applied. MARYBLYT is believed to be a useful tool for determining when to control and monitor apple cultivation areas that suffer from serious fire blight problems.
Epicoccosorus nematosporus was detected in all 22 counties surveyed, but the frequency of occurrence of fingerprint stem blight disease (FSBD) on Eleocharis kuroguwai caused by the fungus varied with fields and regions. The disease occurred more frequently in mountain areas than in plain areas. E. nematosporus was detected in less than 20% of plain areas such as Cimjae and Milyang, whereas, it occurred in 40-60% of mountain areas such as Sangiu and Jangsoo. In Milyang, mean temperature in July to August 1993 ranged from 17 to $27^{\circ}C$ with 14.3 h of dew period. Meanwhile, in the mountain area such as Sangiu, Gyeongbook, temperature ranged from 17 to $24^{\circ}C$ with 16.1 h of dew period. Plant mortality was 61% in Milyang and 82% in Sangju. Underground tuber formation was highly suppressed at 16 and 33 tubers per plot in Sangju and Milyang, respectively. In 1992 and 1995, plants infected ranged from 40 to 78% in July to September. This sharply decreased to an average of 15% in 1999.
Since fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) firstly broke out at mid-Korea in 2015, it is necessary to investigate potential spread of the invasive pathogen. To speculate environmental factors of fireblight epidemic based on disease triangle, a fire blight predicting program, MARYBLYT, was run with the measured meteorological data in 2014-2017 and the projecting future data under RCP8.5 scenario for 2020-2100. After calculating blossom period of Singo pear from phenology, MARYBLYT was run for blossom blight during the blossom period. MARYBLYT warned "Infection" blossom blight in 2014-15 at Anseong and Cheonan as well as Pyungtak and Asan. In addition, it warned "Infection" in 2016-17 at Naju. More than 80% of Korean areas were covered "Infection" or "High", therefore Korea was suitable for fire blight recently. Blossom blight for 2020-2100 was predicted to be highly fluctuate depending on the year. For 80 years of the future, 20 years were serious with "Infection" covered more than 50% of areas in Korea, whereas 8 years were not serious covered less than 10%. By comparisons between 50% and 10% of the year, temperature and amount of precipitation were significantly different. The results of this study are informative for policy makers to manage the alien pathogen.
Since 1995, boxthorn bight caused by Phytophthora spp. has occurred at Chongyang areas in Chungnam province. Infected plants showed yellows and wilt at early stage, but the symptom rapidly progressed into blight due to the decay of roots and basal stem tissues. The disease was relatively severe in poorly drained lowlands and incidence reached ca. 20% in some fields. Two species of Phytophthora were constantly isolated from freshly infected roots and asal stems. Among 39 isolates collected, 26 were identified as P. nicotianae and 13 as P. drechsleri based on their mycological characteristics. Both fungi showed strong pathogenicity to boxthorn cv. Chongyang No. 1. However, the former expressed stronger pathogenicity than the latter. Phytophthora blight of boxthorn caused by the fungi has not been reported n Korea previously.
