The paper seeks to explore some aspects of the current state of knowledge on progressive collapse in the technical literature covering blast loads and structural analysis procedure applicable to reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. The paper describes the progressive collapse analysis of a commercial RC building located in the city of Riyadh and subjected to different blast scenarios. A 3-D finite element model of the structure was created using LS-DYNA, which uses explicit time integration algorithms for solution. Blast loads were treated as dynamic pressure-time history curves applied to the exterior elements. The inherent shortcomings of notional member removal have been taken care of in the present paper by simulating the damage of structural elements through the use of solid elements with the provision of element erosion. Effects of erosion and cratering are studied for different scenarios of the blast.

Steel-concrete single-leaf blast-resistant doors, having steel box and slab inside, are installed on the wall using supporting members such as hinges and latches. Several studies have been conducted on their deflection behavior in the same direction as that of the blast pressure, but studies on their deflection behavior in the opposite direction, that is, studies on negative deflection behavior are relatively insufficient. In this study, we conducted a parameter analysis using finite element analysis on blast-resistant doors, on their rebound behavior in the negative deflection phase. Results revealed that the plastic deformation of the door, and the change in momentum and kinetic energy during rebound, were major factors influencing the rebound behavior. Greater rebound force was developed on the supporting members in the impulsive region, than in the quasi-static region; due to the characteristics in the impulsive region, where the kinetic energy developed relatively greater than the strain energy. In the design process, it is necessary to consider excessive deformation that could occur in the supporting members as the rebound behavior progresses. Additionally, it was found that in the case of steel-concrete blast doors, the rebound force increased relatively more, when the effects of both rebound and negative blast pressure contributed to the negative deflection of the door. Since conditions for the occurrence of this superposition effect could vary depending on structural characteristics and explosion conditions, further investigation may be required on this topic.
Analysis of the internal state of the blast furnace is needed to predict and control the operating condition. Especially, it is important to develop modeling of blast furnace for predicting cohesive zone because shape of cohesive zone influences on overall operating condition of blast furnace such as gas flow, temperature distribution and chemical reactions. Because many previous blast furnace models assumed cohesive zone to be fixed, they can't evaluate change of cohesive zone shape by operation condition such as PCR, blast condition and production rate. In this study, an axi-symmetric 2-dimensional steady state model is proposed to simulate blast furnace process using the general purpose-simulation code. And Porous media is assumed for the gas flow and the potential flow for the solid flow. Velocity, pressure and temperature distribution for gas and solid are displayed as the simulation results. The cohesive zones are figured in 3 different operating conditions.
The analysis methods of blast analysis models are classified into direct analysis and indirect analysis, and the latter is divided into semi-empirical and numerical analysis methods. In order to evaluate the applicability of the ELS blast analysis program, which is a program for analyzing the semi-empirical models, this study selected a simplified analytical model and examined the blast load characteristics of free-air burst explosion and surface burst explosion by using AT-Blast, RC-Blast, and Kinney and Graham's empirical equations, which are the semi-empirical analysis programs. As a result of analyzing the explosion pressure for the scaled distance and the incidence angle for the simplified analytical model, an appropriate analysis can be performed when the range of the scaled distance in the free-air burst explosion analysis was 0.3~0.461 and when the range of the scaled distance in the surface burst explosion analysis was 0.378~0.581. In terms of the incidence angle, the results analyzed within $45^{\circ}$ were considered to be appropriate.
Residual capacity is defined as the load carrying capacity of an RC column after undergoing severe damage. Evaluation of residual capacity of RC columns is necessary to avoid damage initiation in RC structures. The central aspect of the current research is to propose an empirical formula to estimate the residual capacity of RC columns after undergoing severe damage. This formula facilitates decision making of whether a replacement or a repair of the damaged column is adequate for further use. Available literature mainly focused on the simulation of explosion loads by using simplified pressure time histories to develop residual capacity of RC columns and rarely simulated the actual explosive. Therefore, there is a gap in the literature concerning general relation between blast damage of columns with different explosive loading conditions for a reliable and quick evaluation of column behavior subjected to blast loading. In this paper, the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) technique is implemented to simulate high fidelity blast pressure propagations. LS-DYNA software is utilized to solve the finite element (FE) model. The FE model is validated against the practical blast tests, and outcomes are in good agreement with test results. Multivariate linear regression (MLR) method is utilized to derive an analytical formula. The analytical formula predicts the residual capacity of RC columns as functions of structural element parameters. Based on intensive numerical simulation data, it is found that column depth, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, concrete strength and column width have significant effects on the residual axial load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete column under blast loads. Increasing column depth and longitudinal reinforcement ratio that provides better confinement to concrete are very effective in the residual capacity of RC column subjected to blast loads. Data obtained with this study can broaden the knowledge of structural response to blast and improve FE models to simulate the blast performance of concrete structures.

This study is aimed to obtain the critical crack lengthes of the concrete gravity dam and to investigate variation of the effective stress intensity factors at the crack tips of multiple cracks. Applied loads are dynamic load composed of blast vibration and hydrodynamic pressure which can be considered in case of the blast work at near construction site, in addition to static load composed of hydrostatic pressure, crack pressure, and gravity load of the dam. The critical crack lengthes were calculated according to the crack locations, directions, and magnitudes of blast vibration. Also variation of the effective stress intensity factors with respect to the multiple crack shapes and distances between the crack tips was investigated.

Blast walls are integral structures at the typical offshore topside module to provide safety barriers for personnel and critical equipment against any blast loading and hydrocarbon explosions. The blast wall structures are usually configured with stainless steel. It can be referred as the good mechanical properties of the stainless steel against blast load, which features the characteristics of significant energy absorption and ductility. In this study, the proposed designs of corrugated panel are examined in order to determine the best design which satisfies the design criteria. The criteria on maximum deflection and stress are used to decide the best design. The effect of inclined angle of profile on deformation characteristics of blast wall is also performed. The numerical study was performed by using NX Nastran 7.5.
With the development of modern society, there have been great technical advances, and the meaning, shape, and type of preservation objects have also become diverse. However, the legislation of executives established in 1961 has nt yet been revised realistically. Thatses administrative problems related to the usge and storage of explosives. In this study, the cases of civilian's question and thought that had been submitted to the government agency were surveyed. In order to analyze the effects of preservation object, ENPro3.1, which is a simulation program to analyze the sound pressure, was used to estimate the blast pressure when a magazine containing preservation objects exploded. With the damage due to the blast pressure, the problem with the safe distance depending on the preservation object levels was investigated. From the investigation, the blast pressures in the two cases with the artificial structures at the real distance 309 m and without the artificial structures at the legitimate standard space distance 440 m, were found to be 123 dB(L) and 138 dB(L), respectively. That means the influence of blast pressure in shorter distance with artificial structures is 15 dB(L) lower than longer distance without them. Therefore, it is recommended to apply the preservation distance based on the engineering analysis with a consideration of surrounding environment.

The supersonic shock wave generated by fully coupled explosion will change into subsonic shock wave, plastic wave, and elastic wave consecutively as the wave propagates through rock mass. While the estimation of the blast-induced peak pressure was the main aim of the companion paper, this paper will concentrate on the estimation of the rise time of blast-induced pressure. The rise time can be expressed as a function of explosive density, isentropic exponent, detonation velocity, exponential coefficient of the peak pressure attenuation, dynamic yield stress, plastic wave velocity, elastic wave velocity, rock density, Hugoniot parameters, etc. Parametric analysis was performed to pinpoint the most influential parameter that affects the rise time and it was found that rock properties are more sensitive than explosive properties. The probabilistic distribution of the rise time is evaluated by the Rosenblueth'S point estimate method from the probabilistic distributions of explosive properties and rock properties. Numerical analysis was performed to figure out the effect of rock properties and explosive properties on the uncertainty of blast-induced vibration. Uncertainty analysis showed that uncertainty of rock properties constitutes the main portion of blast-induced vibration uncertainty rather than that of explosive properties. Numerical analysis also showed that the loading rate, which is the ratio of the peak blasting pressure to the rise time, is the main influential factor on blast-induced vibration. The loading rate is again more influenced by rock properties than by explosive properties.
This paper presents a computational study for the structural response of blast loaded metallic sandwich panels, with the emphasis placed on their failure behaviours. The fully-clamped panels are square, and the honeycomb core and skins are made of the same aluminium alloy. A material model considering strain and strain rate hardening effects is used and the blast load is idealised as either a uniform or localised pressure over a short duration. The deformation/failure procedure and modes of the sandwich panels are identified and analysed. In the uniform loading condition, the effect of core density and face-sheets thicknesses is analysed. Likewise, the influence of pulse shape on the failure modes is investigated by deriving a pressure-impulse (P-I) diagram. For localised loading, a comparative study is carried out to assess the blast resistant behaviours of three types of structures: sandwich panel with honeycomb core, two face-sheets with air core and monolithic plate, in terms of their permanent deflections and damage degrees. The finding of this research provides a valuable insight into the engineering design of sandwich constructions against air blast loads.
