  • The cross-flow fan which constitutes a fan-duct system with a stabilizer and a scroll casing is widely used in many air-ventilating and air-conditioning devices. Its ooperating points of high efficiency and loading conditions frequently induce a annoying sharp tonal component of discrete frequency on the noise spectrum, which is open called as a BPF(Blade-Passing-Frequency) noise and degrades the sound quality of the devices. this BPF tone has been one of the defects of the cross-flow fan. This study proposes two methods in order to reduce this tonal noise component, which are the random distributions of the fan blades and the skewed shapes of the stabilizer. The proposed methods are verified by a simple analytical model and are applied in manufacturing the cross-flow fan and the stabilizer samples. Some experiments are carried out to verify the reduction capability of BPF tones of above two schemes and the experimental results are analyzed. The comparison between two method is also carried out.

  • Axial fans are widely used in heavy machines due to their ability to produce high flow rate for cooling of engines. At the same time. the noise generated by these fans causes one of the most serious problems. This work is concerned with the low noise technique of discrete frequency noise. The prediction model. which allowed the calculation of acoustic pressure at the blade passing frequency and it's harmonics. has been developed by Farrasat. This theory is founded upon the acoustic radiation of unsteady forces acting on blade. To calculate the unsteady resultant force over the fan blade. Time-Marching Free-Wake Method are used. The fan noise of fan system having unsymmetric engine-room is predicted. In this paper, the discussion is confined to the performance and discrete noise of axial fan and front part of engine room in heavy equipments.

  • Unsteady flow characteristics and associated blade tonal noise of a cross-flow fan are predicted by a computational method. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are time-accurately solved for obtaining the pressure fluctuations between the rotating blades and the stabilizer, and sound pressure is predicted using Curie's equation. The computed fan performance is favorably compared with experimental data, and also indicates that the performance is not significantly altered by the random pitch effect at ${\phi}>0.4$. In the present study, the narrow-band noise characteristics of three impellers with a uniform and two random Pitch (type-A and-B) blades are compared by the SPL (Sound Pressure Level) spectra, and their frequency modulation characteristics of the BPF (Blade Passing Frequency) noise are also discussed.

  • Vibration spectrums of the test loop according to flow conditions were analyzed in order to identify the sources of vibration at peak frequencies. While a flow condition of the sweep test was changed by varying pump rotational speed from 450 rpm to 1500 rpm by the step 150 rpm, midspan acceleration of the test section in width-direction and dynamic pressure perturbation in the test section were measured. Other sources of vibration due to the flow structure interactions, such as acoustic resonance, blade pulsing frequency and bellows wrinkles, were investigated. Pressure perturbation in the section and acoustic resonance due to branch pipe give major effects to the vibration of the test section in high frequency range of 1.5 kHz to 2.8 kHz.

  • This paper demonstrates a computational method in predicting aerodynamic noise generated from wind turbines. Low frequency noise due to displacement of fluid and leading fluctuation, according to the blade passing motion, is modelled on monopole and dipole sources. They are predicted by Farassat 1A equation. Airfoil self noise and turbulence ingestion noise are modelled upon quadrupole sources and are predicted by semi-empirical formulas composed on the groundwork of Brooks et al. and Lowson. Aerodynamic flow in the vicinity of the blade should be obtained first, while noise source modelling need them as numerical inputs. Vortex Lattice Method(VLM) is used to compute aerodynamic conditions near blade. In the use of program X-foil [M.Drela] boundary layer characteristics are calculated to obtain airfoil self noise. Wind turbine blades are divided into spanwise unit panels, and each panel is considered as an independent source. Retarded time is considered, not only in low frequency noise but also In turbulence ingestion noise and airfoil self noise prediction. Numerical modelling is validated with measurement from NREL [AOC15/50 Turbine) and ETSU [Markham's VS45] wind turbine noise measurements.

  • An unsteady three-dimensional simulation based on Reynolds time-averaged governing equation and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, was presented for pump-as-turbine, the pressure fluctuation characteristic of hydraulic turbine with guide vane was obtained. The results show that the time domains of pressure fluctuation in volute change periodically and have identical cycles. In volute tongue and inlet pressure fluctuations are light, while in dynamic and static coupling interface pressure fluctuations are serious; In impeller blade region the pressure fluctuation of pressure surface are lighter than that of suction surface. The dominant frequencies of pressure fluctuation concentrate in low frequency region, and concentrate within 2 times of the blade passing frequency.

  • When unifying the functions of widely used two-fan, engine cooling system into a single unit, the noise and power issues must be addressed. The noise problem due to the increased fan radius is a serious matter especially as the cabin noise becomes quieter for sedans. Of the fan noise components, discrete noise at BPF's (Blade Passing Frequency) seriously degrades cabin sound quality. Unevenly spaced fan is developed to reduce the tones. The fan blades are spaced such that the center of mass is placed exactly on the fan axis to minimize fan vibration. The resulting fan noise is $3{\sim}11$ dBA quieter in discrete noise level than the even bladed fan.

  • Axial fans are widely used in household electrical appliances due to their easy usage and high flow rate for cooling capacity. At the same time, the noise generated by these fans causes one of serious problems. In order to calculate the noise of a fan, we develop the software IFD - Intranet Fans Design. With this software we can design, analysis the performance and predict the noise of fan. The prediction model, which allowed the calculation of acoustic pressure at the blade passing frequency and it's higher harmonic frequencies, has been developed by Lowson's equation. To calculate the unsteady resultant force of the blade, time-marching free-wake method is used. The objective of this study is to calculate the effects of number of blades, rotating velocity, and sweep angle on the noise of fan..

  • B.P.F.(Blade Passing Frequency) levels were measured with the cut-off clearance changes. The velocity inside the scroll, pressure fluctuation at cut-off region, and the scroll surface pressure distribution along the scroll from the cut-off to outlet were measured. With a certain cut-off clearance the improvement of efficiency and attenuation of B.P.F. noise level could be achieved. The measured results of pressure fluctuation and scroll surface pressure distribution showed that the secondary flow inside the scroll increased B.P.F. noise level at the cut-off region as the cut-off clearance got wide.
