  • Black-white reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display was prepared with two color liquid crystal layers, the combination of yellow color liquid crystal and blue color liquid crystal. The rubbing of cholesteric liquid crystal panel affects the brightness and color spectrum due to increase the planar domain texture. The CIE chromaticity coordinate of white is (0.31, 0.31).

  • The purpose of this study is to survey colors of background, marker, and pointer being used in passenger car's display panel, and to suggest ergonomic design guidelines of car's display panel to enhance driver's visibility. An experiment was conducted, in which reading time of display was measured as dependent variable, and colors of black, white, blue and green were selected as background colors of display, and black, white, yellow, and green as marker's colors, and black white, yellow, green and red as pointer's colors. The results showed that reading time of display with white background, yellow marker and pointer was shortest. It was expected that this results could be used as valuable design guidelines in car's display panel.

  • We present a microcapsule manufacturing technique, which contains a polymer coated white $TiO_2$ and black particles suspension as the core material for a electrophoretic display ink, via the in-situ polymerization method using melamine? formaldehyde as a wall material. The obtained capsules have $50 {\sim} 300 {\mu}m$ of the diameter range. They show a good mechanical strength and thermal and optical property. We fabricate the microcapsules to the single layer to test the black/white electrophoretic display application.

  • This study evaluated the effects of the syllable number(one, two), font type(gothic, myung), color contrast (black on white, white on black), display type(paper, LCD), age(20s, 60s) and character size(2~80pt) on the Korean characters' legibility. Total twenty subjects from two age groups (20s: n=10, 60s: n=10, five male and five female in each group) participated in the legibility test. A target panel was presented in the distance of 50 cm, and subjects conducted a reading tests for, in total, 16 treatment conditions (full combination of syllable number, font type, color contrast and display type). Results showed that two-syllable words revealed better legibility than one-syllable character. The main effects of the age, display type, font type, color contrast, and character size were statistically significant(p<0.01). Paper showed better legibility than LCD, particularly in the 20s and in the character sizes of less than 9pt. Gothic revealed more correct answers than Myung, particularly in the 60s, paper, and white on black conditions. It is expected that these results can provide basic data for the determination of the Korean characters' minimum legible size standards. For example, the minimum legible size for the Gothic and black on white characters presented in the paper should be 5pt for 20s and 1lpt for 60s if the 75% correct reading(3 correct answers in this study) was applied for the legibility criterion.

  • In this paper, we propose the modified display color control system using white point line, boundary lines and S-shaped curves to emphasize blue and red tone colors on CIE1931 diagram. The proposed system divides RGB gamut into movable area and non-movable area by using boundary lines. The colors in movable area are moved into right side or left side along quadratic curve to change the bluish (or reddish) color to more bluish (or more reddish), while those in non-movable area are excepted from color control to prevent skin color from changing. The loci of the quadratic curves are very similar to the arc of the white-point line which connects all points that represent the chromaticities of a black body radiator at different temperatures and is also called the black body locus. The RGB gamut extension by movement of chromaticity coordinate can improve color reproducibility. Therefore in the case of application to LCD, the display shows excellent performance because the LCD's color reproducibility is comparatively lower than that of other display systems. The proposed system is also experimentally demonstrated with Xilinx Virtex FPGA XCV2000E- 6BG560 and the TV set.

  • In this study, the use of a discharging process for charged particles is proposed to achieve an ideal electrical balance or neutralization and to improve the electrical and optical properties of a reflective electronic display. Here, negatively charged particles (white) and positively charged particles (black) are used. The q/m (charge per mass for a particle) values of the black and white particles are $+4.5{\mu}C/g$ and $-4.5{\mu}C/g$, respectively. We compared the movement of the charged particles by varying their discharging time. Stable movement of the charged particles is obtained with an appropriate discharging time, which resulted in improvements of the optical properties of the panel.

  • In this study, we have investigated a process of preparation of white and black pigment particles by physical or chemical coating with functionalized polymers for the flexible low-cost paper-like display. This polymer coating provided <1 ${\mu}m$ monodispersed particles changed their dispersion, density, optical and electrical properties.

  • In this paper, we describe the fabrication of nano-scale ink particles with narrow size distribution to offer high optical density in electrophoretic display applications. Charged white ($TiO_2$ and polyester) and black (carbon black and polyester) nano size ink particles in size range of 200 ~ 700nm were made successively using modified non-aqueous base emulsion process. The EPD showed white reflectance of 58% and saturation voltage of ${\pm}10V$.

  • The black/white electronic ink containing high mobility white nano particles and the organic black pigment particles dispersed in dielectric fluid were prepared. A charge control agent affects the electrophoretic zeta potentials of white particle, which show the maximum value in zeta potential. The electronic ink panel fabricated with the charged white particles and the black particles exhibits more than 15:1 contrast ratio at 10V.

  • We analyzed the movement and response time of charged particles according to particle-inserting methods to understand the variation of quantity of q/m of charged particles, which is a very important factor in electrical and optical characteristics of the charged particle type display, such as lifetime, response time, contrast ratio, reflectivity, etc. For our study we used white and black charged particles of which diameter is $20{\mu}m$, prepared pieces of ITO(indium tin oxide) coated glass substrate, and formed ribs on the glass substrates. The width of a rib is $30{\mu}m$ and the cell size is $220{\mu}m{\times}220{\mu}m$. As the particle-inserting methods, the white and black charged particles were respectively inserted into a front and a rear panel with a very small electric field and also the mixture of the white and black charged particles were inserted into a rear panel. As a result of the driving characteristics of charged particles, the factors about variation of quantity of q/m according to the particle inserting method was experimentally demonstrate, showing very different driving voltage, response time, the particle movement, etc.
