  • In order to evaluate the exact effect of detergency it is necessary both to measure the actual soil content by chemical analysis and to determine the degree of soil removal visually. Since it takes considerable time and effort to use both methods, usually one of the two methods is used. Many studies have been carried out through increasing the visibility of oily soil to evaluate detergency by measuring reflectance of fabrics. In this study Sudan Black B, an oil soluble dye was used as an indicator to increase the visibility of oily soil on cotton and polyester fabrics. The condition of artificially soiled fabrics and the method of evaluating detergency were investigated which represent the actual detergency of oily soil by measuring the reflectance only. Also the detergency of Sudan Black B and that of oily soil were compared with each other under various washing conditions, As a result, the K/S values converted from the reflectances showed a good correlation with the actual soil content. Linear relationship between K/S value and the actual soil content was obtained. The K/S values of washed fabrics were higher than those of unwashed fabrics which included same content of soil since the soil visibility changed during washing. But the difference was small when Sudan Black B was used. With the increase of soil content, detergency of cotton fabric decreased, but detergency of polyester fabric increased gradually. With regards to soiled fabrics, detergency of cotton fabric measured by K/S value was close to that of actual oily soil when Sudan black B was used as an indicator.

  • Black Friday, a biggest holiday shopping season in the United States, has been regarded as a great opportunity that fashion retailers can dramatically increase their sales. However, there has been a lack of attention to consumers' shopping experiences on Black Friday from the consumer perspectives. The objective of this study is to explore consumer shopping experiences on Black Friday, in terms of consumer responses toward the experiences, shopping values, and any possible factors influencing the experiences. The method of critical incident technique was used with 198 critical incidents extracted from 165 responses of university students in the United States. As results, the shopping experiences on Black Friday were categorized into positive vs. negative shopping experiences. After that, the positive and negative experiences were respectively divided into two common themes: utilitarian shopping value vs. hedonic shopping value. In addition to the common themes, 12 categories were also emerged. Among positive experiences, utilitarian shopping experiences includes two categories of off-price shopping and shopping for expensive products, whereas hedonic shopping experiences includes three categories of impulse buying, holiday atmosphere, and shopping for the latest or luxury brand products. Among negative experiences, utilitarian shopping experiences includes four categories of modest discounts, out of stock, time-consuming queues, and fatigue of holiday shopping, while hedonic shopping experiences includes three categories of crowded environments, compulsive buying, and poorly managed stores. In conclusion, it is notable that consumer can undergo negative as well as positive shopping experiences on Black Friday. Implications and suggestions are also discussed.

  • We present the results from analysis of the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) for the 4 Hz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) around the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1550-564. The resultant Hilbert spectra demonstrate that the QPO is composed of a series of intermittent signals appearing occasionally. From the analysis of the HHT, we further found the distribution of the lifetimes for the intermittent oscillations and the distribution for the time intervals with no significant signal (the break time). The mean lifetime is 1.45 s and 90% of the oscillation segments have lifetimes less than 3.1 s whereas the mean break time is 0.42 s and 90% of break times are less than 0.73 s. We conclude that the intermittent feature of the QPO could be explained by the Lense-Thirring precession model and rules out interpretations of continual frequency modulation.

  • Black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) produce alarm calls apparently related to their anti-predator behaviors, but the hypothesis that the calls are actually used as functionally referential alarm signals has not yet been tested. In this study, we performed a series of experiments using visual (a stuffed goshawk: Accipiter gentilis) and acoustic (alarm calls and a control vocalization) stimuli at 15 sites in Sinjindo-ri and Dowhang-ri, Taean-gun, Chungnam province to examine anti-predator responses of the gulls to alarm calls in playback trials. We found that the gulls' visual recognition of a perched hawk model in the absence of alarm vocalizations was weak or absent because the model was noticed in only two out of 16 trials. The gulls' responses to playbacks of the alarm call only and the alarm call with a visual stimulus differed from responses to the control vocalization in latency to approach, time mobbing, and the percentage of gulls responding, while the responses to alarm call only differed from alarm call with a visual stimulus in latency to first fly, latency to call, and time mobbing. The results of this study suggest that alarm calls of black-tailed gulls are used to elicit appropriate anti-predator behaviors that are intensified when a predator is detected visually.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine optimal culture conditions for the production of tubers of Calla (Zantedeschia elliottiana 'Golden Affair' and 'Black Magic') in Korea highland. In vitro produced plantlets and tuberlets of Calla 'Golden Affair' and 'Black Magic' were planted plastic film greenhouse and grown for 100, 120, 140 days, with different night temperature treatments ($0{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ : no heating, 10, $15^{\circ}C$). In both cultivars, tuber size(tuber diameter, tuber height) and tuber weight increased with increasing cultivation period when the night temperature was maintained at $10^{\circ}C$. The largest tuber diameter in vitro produced plantlets was 5.8cm in 'Black Magic' and 3.2cm in 'Golden Affair', and daily tuber growth rate was 1.110g in 'Black Magic' and 0.092g in 'Golden Affair' under the culture conditions. Consequently we think that tuber harvest date was Oct. 30 and night temperature was $10^{\circ}C$ and no heating that was proper method of tuber production. However we had selection of $10^{\circ}C$ treatment for tuber production because it appeared freezing damage occasionally in highland late in October.

  • To find out the planting times for the economic yield of a super sweet corn hybrid, "Cambella 90" was planted from 1 April of 2003 and 2004 at the 10 days intervals under black polyethylene (P. E.) film mulch and in bare soil in Gyeongsan. Daily maximum soil temperature under black P. E. film mulch was lower, while daily minimum soil temperature was higher compared to bare soil. Soil moisture content under black P. E. film mulch maintained optimum level longer than in bare soil. Emergence rate, percent stand, culm length, and the number of marketable ears were higher under black P E. film mulch compared to bare soil. Silking date under black P. E. film mulch was earlier compared to bare soil by $4{\sim}6$ days at April plantings, while only 1 day earlier at June plantings. Silking date of individual plants in a plot ranged $3{\sim}5$ days depending on planting dates and soil mulch in the same plot. The number of large ears decreased as planting dates delayed. Considering emergence rate and the number of marketable ears, the planting time for the economic yield of a super sweet com hybrid, "Cambella 90" ranged 1 April to 20 June in the southern part of Korea.

  • This study was carried out to develop the automation bark peeling process of paper mulberry for making Hanji. Nowadays, almost raw material has been imported from south-east asia for making Hanji. Raw material dependence is very high for Hanji-making by low productivity in korea. This study is focused on the resolution for problem of bark peeling automation. Water and sand jet of compressed air was possible bark peeling for black bast fiber. The effect of removing black bast fiber increased the longer the steaming time. Also using drum of bark peeling showed that results under temperature $80^{\circ}C$ and Rpm 50/min were best bark peeling and separating bast fiber from stem. The contents of holocellulose, lignin, ethanol-benzene extractives, and ash were 91.63~95.55%, 1.4~2.0%, 1.12~1.65%, and 1.4~4.3%, respectively. Chemical characteristics are similar between imported raw-material with drum bark.

  • We present a new ray-tracing code, "Odyssey", for the Kerr spacetime accelerated by the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). Taking advantage of the ability of nVidia graphic cards to evaluate trajectories of a large amount of photon simultaneously, the code is two orders of magnitude as fast as the previous CPU-based code corresponding to the speed of few nanoseconds per photon per time step. In the light of the Graphic User Interface (GUI) powered by the GPU-enhanced 2D/3D displaying technique, DirectX, it is feasible for users to manipulate diverse results such as rotating and zooming in/out the trajectories of photon instantly near the black hole. Thus the Odyssey can serve as a tool not only for scientific but also for the educational purpose. We discuss possible applications in detail in light of several results such as the shape of the silhouette of a black hole, the shape of a hot spot orbiting a black hole, and 3D photon trajectories.
