  • A high NIR-reflective black pigment is developed by Mn doping of Fe2O3. The pigment powders are prepared by spray pyrolysis, and the effect of the Mn concentration on the blackness and optical properties is investigated. Mn doping into the crystal lattice of α-Fe2O3 is found to effectively change the powder color from red to black, lowering the NIR reflectance compared to that of pure Fe2O3. The pigment doped with 10% Mn, i.e., Fe1.8Mn0.2O3, exhibits a black color with an optical bandgap of 1.3 eV and a Chroma value of 1.14. The NIR reflectance of the prepared Fe1.8Mn0.2O3 black pigment is 2.2 times higher than that of commercially available carbon black, and this material is proven to effectively work as a cool pigment in a temperature rise experiment under near-infrared illumination.

  • Hanging boards of the Joseon royal court are hung on buildings related to the royal family, such as palaces and Jongmyo Shrine, to show the hierarchy and character of the building. In addition, the manufacturing method and materials are recorded in the royal protocols of the Joseon Dynasty, so it is an important material for studying the manufacturing method and material changes at that time. However, the hanging boards were restored several times due to fire or war, and it is presumed that there is a change in the original form and material of the hanging boards. In particular, many hanging boards of the Joseon royal court were written with calligraphy by kings, so there are many forms consisting of gold letters on a black background. This study tried to analyze the pigments remaining in the letters of 44 of the Joseon royal hanging boards, which are presumed to be gold letters, and to find out the changes in the hanging board production method and materials by referring to the analysis results. The letters of the hanging boards studied were classified according to the current state of the gold pigment and the detected components. As a result of the analysis of character pigments, 24 embossing techniques and 5 intaglio techniques were mainly detected with gold (Au), but 15 embossing techniques were detected with brass (Cu, Zn). Only blue-green substances, not gold pigments, remain in some of the hanging boards in which brass components were detected. A reproduction experiment was conducted because the pigments of the brass component were not recorded in the literature and were not currently used as Dancheong pigments. In the reproduction experiment, it was difficult to confirm the application and use of brass pigments due to the limitations of materials, but it is judged that research on the timing and method of using brass pigments is needed in the future.

  • Colored rices are a hulled grains having red or purple pigments in bran. Especially black rice (Heugjinjubyeo) is considered to be a healthy food in Asia. Black rice is of great interesting because of the possible biological activity with their anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are water-soluble plant pigments and representatives of flavonoids. The anthocyanins in black rice include cyanidin 3-O-glucoside, peonidin 3-O-glucoside, malvidin 3-O-glucoside, pelagonidin 3-O-glucoside and delphinidin 3-O-glucoside. In this study, anthocyanins in a black rice were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively with HPLC and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The anthocyanins contained approximately 95% of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and 5% of peonidin-3-O-glucoside. Antioxidant activities of the anthocyanin extract were investigated by using various in vitro methods. The 100g/ml concentration of the anthocyanin extracted exhibited 88.83% inhibition on the peroxidation of linoleic acid, 55.20% DPPH free radical scavenging activity, 54.96% superoxide anion radical scavenging activity, and 72.67% hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity. And it also showed high ferrous ion reducing capability. These results suggest that the anthocyanin extracted from black rice may be utilized as a possible antioxdiant agent against ROS.

  • This study aimed to analyze the nature and characteristics of the preserved state, materials, and colored pigments of a Buddhist painting of Eunhaesa temple(gwaebultaeng), which is Treasure No. 1270 of Korea, through scientific investigation and analysis. Based on the historical background of the subject, the study investigated the aspects of conservation and analyzed the material characteristics of each pigment in the painting. Results indicate that various colors were created using inorganic pigments such as white lead, minium, cinnabar, orpiment, gold, atacamite, malachite, and smalt and using organic pigments such as black and indigo. The Eunhaesa painting used "cho" as a material for wallpaper, which was unusual during the Joseon period. In addition, a white layer was formed using various white pigments, which was also rare during this period.

  • The Donggwanwangmyo Shrine was built in the period of Joseon Dynasty in 1602. There are Clay Statues (Gwanwo, Jangbi, Woojanggun, Juchang, Jojaryoung and so on) enshrined in the inside of the main hall. Original color of these Clay Statues are deteriorated by inorganic pollutant like dust. And the origanal forms were damaged during several process of restorations and repaintings. This study carried out XRD, SEM-EDS, P-XRF and chromaticity measurement for characterization of pigments which painted on Clay Statues. As a result, cinnabar, hematite and red lead were used to paint in pigments for the red and brown colors. Light red pigment was made by gypsum with these minerals that make colors. Graphite and gold were used to color of black and gold pigment, respectively. Green pigment is identified of malachite, atacamite and glauconite. Blue pigment which is clearly painted on Clay Statues is interpreted a morden industrial pigment that were painted at repair work. White pigments are detected calcite, gypsum and silver white. Orpiment and litharge were used to color of yellow and light yellow pigment.

  • Ceramic pigments, which show good thermal and chemical stabilities, have been applied for various industry with development of digital printing technology. Ceramic inkjet printing has advantages of high efficiency of ink usage and eco-friendly process. Thus, the interest of the ceramic pigments with various function and color including CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) digital primary color is increasing. Here, we investigated the thermal and chemical stabilities of white ceramic pigment for digital inkjet printing process. The microstructure and crystal structure of MgO, $Al_2O_3$, $MgAl_2O_4$, $CeO_2$ were analyzed, and the stability with glaze were evaluated. In order to evaluate the applicability for digital inkjet printing, the chemical stability of white ceramic pigments at high temperature was investigated by characterization of the mixed color properties with CMYK ceramic pigments after firing process.

  • There has been known C3G (Cyanidin-3-Glucoside), D3G (Delphinidin-3-Glucoside), and Pt3G (Petunidin-3-Glucoside) were main anthocyanin pigments in black-seeded soybean. Anthocyanin contents of total 1,032 black-seeded soybean germplasms were analyzed by HPLC. Average of total anthocyanin content was 11.67 mg/g on the all materials ranged from 0.54 to 23.45 mg/g. Mean value of C3G, D3G, and Pt3G contents in all black-seeded soybeans were 8.81, 1.78 and 0.79 mg/g, respectively. Environmental conditions influenced anthocyanin contents during seed development. Delayed flowering, especially of later maturing germplasms, has been showed to result in increased anthocyanin content. So, prolonged maturation period germplasm is generally higher than that of shorten genotypes. It may be concluded that the higher levels of anthocyanin content was associated with the late dates of harvest maturity. Also larger seeds showed high anthocyanin contents than smaller. That inclination is similar in C3G's occasion because C3G content contribute highly to total anthocyanin content than other pigments.

  • Microscopical studies of Leucothrix sp. and its histological effect on the gill tissue of Penaeus japanicus have been made. Infection of Leucothrix sp. results in color change of the gills of the shrimp which is mainly due to the brown or black pigments of the filamentous bacteria. Higher degree of the infections makes necrosis and serious histological changes of the gill tissue and this infection affects the respiratory activity of the shrimp.
