In this work, the effect of chemical treatments on the carbon blacks as-received has been studied in the context of surface, adsorption, microstructure properties, and physical surface free energetics. As an experimental result, the basic chemical treatment leads to an increase in the either dispersive or specific component without significant change the pH and specific surface area. While, acidic chemical treatment do significantly change the surface and adsorption properties, and microstructures of the carbon blacks. In particular, the result given by basic chemical treatment shows an increase of the London dispersive component of the surface free energy which is a major parameter in evaluating the dispersion or specific surface area of the carbon blacks studied. This is probably a major role in evaluating the dispersion the carbon blacks, which are reinforced in elastomer matrix in a composite system.
Quaternary ammonium salt terminated silane was prepared from aminopropyldimethylethoxysilane with methyliodide and ionized 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane $(Li^+TCNQ^-)$ was prepared from TCNQ with methyliodide and lithium iodide. Quaternary ammonium salt silane-TCNQ adduct (ST) was prepared by reacting quaternary ammonium salt terminated silane with $Li^+TCNQ^-$ solution. Poly (dimethylsiloxane)-ST adduct (PST) was prepared by condensation of $\alpha,\omega-hydroxyl$ group terminated poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) with ST. Maleated polyethylene modified with PDMS (PST-g-MPE) was prepared by melt polymerization of maleated PE and PST in internal mixer and PST-g-MPE/carbon black (CB) and MPE/CB composites were prepared by compounding PST with MPE and PST-g-MPE, respectively. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were measured and dispersion characteristics of CB in matrix rosins show that the dispersion of CB in PST-g-MPE/CB was better than that of MPE/CB composite.
The monomer N,N'-bis(2-pyrrol-1-yl-propyl)-4,4'-bipyridine(bpb) was electrochemically polymerized on the glassy carbon electrode surface, which was modified with 1:1 ratio of erichrome black T(EBT) and glutathione(GSSG) to give a type of GC/poly-bpb, EBT, GSSG electrode for depositing Zn(II). The diffusion coefficients of the incorporated ions were 2.43${\times}10^{-15}$ and 9.14${\times}10^{-15} cm^2s^{-1}$ before taking Zn(II) ions and after them respectively. The modified electrodes are stable at the electrode process. The polymerized poly-bpb of 2.83${\times}10^4gmol^{-1}$ can deposit 2.15${\times}10^4gmol^{-1}$ of Zn(II). The number of pumping ions involving in the redox procedure at 0.77 V was 81.7% of the captured 180 ions into the polymer matrix, which was 3 times larger than that of the electrode modified with EBT alone.

System identification is the field of modeling dynamic systems from experimental data. As a modeling technique, we can mention finite element method (FEM). In addition, we are able to measure modal data as the experimental data. The system can be generally categorized into a gray box and black box. In the gray box, we know mathematical model of a system, but we don't know structural parameters exactly, so we need to estimate structural parameters. In the black box, we don't know a system completely, so we need to identify system from nothing. To date, various system identification methods have been developed. Among them, we introduce system realization theory which uses Hankel matrix and Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) that enable us to identify modal parameters from noisy measurement data. Although we obtain noise-free data, however, we are likely to face difficulties in identifying a structure with hidden modes. Hidden modes can be occurred when the input or output position comes to a nodal point. If we change a system using a mode decoupling controller, the hidden modes can be revealed. Because we know the perturbation quantities in a closed loop system with the controller, we can realize an original system by subtracting perturbation quantities from the closed loop system. In this paper, we propose a novel method to identify a structure with hidden modes using the mode decoupling controller and the associated example is given for illustration.

Semiconducting layers are thin rubber film between electrical cable wire and insulating polymer layers having a volume resistivity of ${\sim}10^2{\Omega}cm$. A new semiconducting material was suggested in this study based on the carbon nanotube(CNT)-reinforced polymer nanocomposites. CNT-reinforced polymer nanocomposites were prepared by solution mixing with various polymer type and dual filler system. The mechanical, thermal and electrical properties were investigated as a function of polymer type and dual filler system based on CNT and carbon black. The volume resistivity of composites was strongly related with the crystallinity of polymer matrix. With decreased crystallinity, the volume resistivity decreased linearly until a critical point, and it remained constant with further decreasing the crystallinity. Dual filler system also affected the volume resistivity. The CNT-reinforced nanocomposite showed the lowest volume resistivity. When a small amount of carbon black(CB) was replaced the CNT, the crystallinity increased considerably leading to a higher volume resistivity.

The electrical and mechanical properties of room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber composites are investigated as functions of multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT), carbon black (CB), and thinner content. The thinner is used to improve the CNT and CB dispersion in the matrix. The electrical and mechanical properties of the composite with CNT are improved when compared to the composite with CB at the same content. As the thinner content is 80 phr, the electric resistance of the composite decreases significantly with the CNT content and shows contact point saturation of CNT at 2.5 phr. As the thinner content increases, the dispersion of conductive particles improves; however, the critical CB content increases because of the reduction in the CB weight ratio. It is believed that an electrode that needs good flexibility and excellent electrical properties can be manufactured when the amount of CNT and CB are increased with the thinner content.
In computer Go, the method evaluating the situation of a face is not generalized. To evaluate the situations all the faces accurately, computer Go must judge owners of 361 positions according the changes of the faces. In this paper, we apply the structure of graph as a method analyzing the rules and characters of Go. The Situation Evaluation System(SES) which can evaluate the situation of a face without DB information oかy using strength of stone(SS), influence power(IP), safety(S), position value(PV), and position-value matrix(PM) is proposed. This system is very effective to evaluate the whole situations of Go because it can show the owner of 361 positions between Black and White. As a result, SES can well compute the situations in the opening game of Go. It makes 70.9% hit-ratio as compared with the practical Go games of professional players. According to the results compared with Nemesis, the commercial program which has the joseki(established stones: hewn sequences of moves near the corner which result in near-equal positions for White and Black), SES is superior to Nemesis by 10% higher in the hit-ratio of situation evaluations of professional players.
The effect of acid-base treatments of carbon blacks (CBs) was investigated in the mechanical properties of CBs/rubber composites. The surface characteristics of the CBs were determined by the pH, acid-base values, and surface energetics. Their mechanical properties of the composites were also evaluated by the crosslink density $(V_e)$ and tearing energy (T). As an experimental result, acidically treated CBs led to the increase of the specific component $({\gamma}s^{sp})$, resulting in decreasing the mechanical properties of the composites. However, basically treated CBs showed a higher value of the dispersive component $({\gamma}s^L)$ than that of the untreated or acidically treated CBs. It was also found that the interaction of the CBs-rubber was improved, resulting in the improvement of the crosslink density and mechanical properties of the composites. It was then remarked that the acid-base characteristics of the CB surfaces made an important role in improving the physical properties of the rubber matrix composites.

Solution plasma is a unique method which provides a direct discharge in solutions. It is one of the promising techniques for various applications including the synthesis of metallic/non-metallic nanomaterials, decomposition of organic compounds, and the removal of microorganism. In the context of nanomaterial syntheses, solution plasma has been utilized to produce carbon nanoparticles and metallic-carbon nanoparticle systems. The main purpose of this study was to synthesize nickel nanoparticles embedded in a matrix of carbon particles by solution plasma in one-step using waste vegetable oil as the carbon source. The experimental setup was done by simply connecting a bipolar pulsed power generator to nickel electrodes, which were submerged in the waste vegetable oil. Black powders of the nickel nanoparticles-embedded carbon (NiNPs/Carbon) particles were successfully obtained after discharging for 90 min. The morphology of the synthesized NiNPs/Carbon was investigated by a scanning electron microscope, which revealed a good dispersion of NiNPs in the carbon-particle matrix. The X-ray diffraction of NiNPs/Carbon clearly showed the co-existence of crystalline Ni nanostructures and amorphous carbon. The crystallite size of NiNPs (through the Ni (111) diffraction plane), as calculated by the Scherrer equation was found to be 64 nm. In addition, the catalytic activity of NiNPs/Carbon was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry in an acid solution. It was found that NiNPs/Carbon did not show a significant catalytic activity in the acid solution. Although this work might not be helpful in enhancing the activity of the fuel cell catalysts, it is expected to find application in other processes such as the CO conversion (by oxidation) and cyclization of organic compounds.
Nondestructive damage sensitivity of carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their adding contents was investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by acoustic emission (AE), which was correlated to the change in electrical resistance, ΔR under double-matrix composites (DMC) test. Stress sensing on carbon nanocomposites was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic loading. At the same volume fraction, the damage sensitivity for fiber fracture, matrix deformation and stress sensing were highest for CNT/epoxy composite, whereas for CB/epoxy composite they were the lowest among three carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Damage sensitivity was correlated with morphological observation of carbon nanocomposites. Homogeneous dispersion among CNMs could be keying parameters for better damage monitoring. In this study, damage sensing of carbon nanocomposites could be evaluated well nondestructively by the electrical resistance measurement with AE.
