  • Counterexamples of a skew-normal distribution are developed to improve our understanding of this distribution. Two examples on bivariate non-skew-normal distribution owning marginal skew-normal distributions are first provided. Sum of dependent skew-normal and normal variables does not follow a skew-normal distribution. Continuous bivariate density with discontinuous marginal density also exists in skew-normal distribution. An example presents that the range of possible correlations for bivariate skew-normal distribution is constrained in a relatively small set. For unified skew-normal variables, an example about converging in law are discussed. Convergence in distribution is involved in two separate examples for skew-normal variables. The point estimation problem, which is not a counterexample, is provided because of its importance in understanding the skew-normal distribution. These materials are useful for undergraduate and/or graduate teaching courses.

  • The paper extends earlier work on the skew-normal distribution, a family of distributions including normal, but with extra parameter to regulate skewness. The present work introduces a singly truncated parametric family that strictly includes a truncated normal distribution, and studies its properties, with special emphasis on the relation with bivariate normal distribution.

  • We present a simple geometric approach which uses polar transformation and elementary trigonometry to evaluating an orthant probability in a bivariate normal distribution. Figures are provided to illustrate the situation for varying correlation coefficient. We derive the distribution of the sample correlation coefficient from a bivariate normal distribution when the sample size is 2 as an application.

  • The various analyses of the historical rainfall data need to be utilized in a hydraulic engineering project. The probability distributions of the rainfall events according to annual maximum continuous rainfall depths are studied for the hydrologic frequency analysis. The bivariate normal distribution, the bivariate lognormal distribution, and the bivariate gamma distribution are applied to the rainfall events composed of rainfall depths and its durations at Kangnung, Seoul, Incheon, Chupungnyung, Teagu, Jeonju, Kwangju, and Busan. These rainfall events are fitted to the the bivariate normal distribution and the bivariate lognormal distribution, but not fitted to the bivariate gamma distribution. Frequency curves of probability rainfall events are suggested from the probability distribution selected by the goodness-of-fit test.

  • Bivariate Laplace distributions for which both marginal distributions and Laplace are discussed. Three kinds of bivariate Laplace distributions which are extended bivariate exponential distributions of Gumbel (1960) are introduced in this paper. These symmetrical distributions are compared with asymmetrical distributions of Kotz et al. (2000). Their probability density functions, cumulative distribution functions are derived. Conditional skewnesses and kurtoses are also defined. Their correlation coefficients are calculated and compared with others. We proposed bivariate random vector generating methods whose distributions are bivariate Laplace. With sample means and medians obtained from generated random vectors, variance and covariance matrices of means and medians are calculated and discussed with those of bivariate normal distribution.

  • This article deals with the problem of testing for the correlation coefficient in the bivariate normal distribution. We propose Bayesian hypothesis testing procedures for the bivariate normal correlation coefficient under the noninformative prior. The noninformative priors are usually improper which yields a calibration problem that makes the Bayes factor to be defined up to a multiplicative constant. So we propose the default Bayesian hypothesis testing procedures based on the fractional Bayes factor and the intrinsic Bayes factors under the reference priors. A simulation study and an example are provided.

  • The marginal distribution of X is considered when (X, Y) has a truncated bivariate t-distribution. This paper mainly focuses on the marginal nontruncated distribution of X where Y is truncated below at its mean and its observations are not available. Several properties and applications of this distribution, including relationship with Azzalini's skew-normal distribution, are obtained. To circumvent inferential problem arises from adopting the frequentist's approach, a Bayesian method utilizing a data augmentation method is suggested. Illustrative examples demonstrate the performance of the method.

  • We propose some methods to obtain optimal thresholds and classification functions by using various cutoff criterion based on the bivariate ROC curve that represents bivariate cumulative distribution functions. The false positive rate and false negative rate are calculated with these classification functions for bivariate normal distributions.

  • In this paper, we consider the estimation of the correlation coefficient in the bivariate normal distribution, based on a sample obtained using a modification of the moving extreme ranked set sampling technique (MERSS) that was introduced by Al-Saleh and Al-Hadhrami (2003a). The modification involves using a concomitant random variable. Nonparametric-type methods as well as the maximum likelihood estimation are considered under different settings. The obtained estimators are compared to their counterparts that are obtained based simple random sampling (SRS). It appears that the suggested estimators are more efficient

  • Testing for normality has always been a center of practical and theoretical interest in statistical research. In this paper a test statistic for bivariate normality is proposed. The underlying idea is to investigate all the possible linear combinations that reduce to the standard normal distribution under the null hypothesis and compare the order statistics of them with the theoretical normal quantiles. The suggested statistic is invariant with respect to nonsingular matrix multiplication and vector addition. We show that the limit distribution of an approximation to the suggested statistic is represented as the supremum over an index set of the integral of a suitable Gaussian Process. We also simulate the null distribution of the statistic and give some critical values of the distribution and power results.
