  • This report examines the economic feasibility of a commercial 50,000 barrel per day direct/indirect coal liquefaction (DCL/ICL) facility to produce commercial-grade diesel and naphtha liquids from medium-sulfur bituminous coal. The scope of the study includes capital and operating cost estimates, sensitivity analysis and a comparative financial analysis. Based on plant capacity of 50,000BPD, employing Illinois #6 bituminous coal as feed coal the total capital cost appeared $3,994,858,000(DCL) and $4,942,976,000(ICL). Also, the internal rate of return of DCL/ICL appeared 13.27% and 12.68% on the base condition. In this case, coal price and sale price of products were the most influence factors. And ICL's payback period(6.8 years) was longer than DCL's (6.6 years). According to sensitivity analyses, the important factors on DCL/ICL processes were product sale price, feed coal price and the capital cost in order.

  • Given the fact that the entire bituminous coal used for a boiler is imported, the supply of coal is often affected by the rise of international coal price. Moreover, coal suppliers have been diversified due to the competition among power generation companies for reducing costs and inexpensive sub-bituminous coal is used. As a result, boilers combustion conditions have been deviated from the initial boiler design. This requires the selection of adequate excessive air ratio for different combustion conditions to enhance the efficiency of boiler operation. The boiler efficiency has been identified through an examination on the change of excessive air ratio by mixed fuel in unit 8 of Dangjin power plant complex. In addition, an excessive air ratio was calculated based on the examination result. According to the study result, the adequate excessive air ratio was 13% when Macquarie and Powder river were mixed at a ratio of 5:5 and when Sonoma and Megaprima persada were mixed at a ratio of 5:5. When BHP Billiton and Powder river were mixed at a ratio of 4:6 and Centennial and Batubara were mixed at a ratio of 3:7, the adequate excessive air ratio was 11%.

  • A numerical investigation has been carried out about the performance of a 500MW class tangentially coal-fired boiler, focusing on the optimization of separated overfire air (SOFA) position to reduce NOx emission. For this purpose, a comprehensive combination of NOx chemistry models has been employed in the numerical simulation of a particle-laden flow along with solid fuel combustion and heat and mass transfer. A reasonable agreement has been shown in baseline cases for predicted operational parameters compared with experimental data measured in the boiler. A further SOFA calculation has been made to obtain optimum elevation and position of SOFA port. Additionally, clarifying on the effect of SOFA on NOx emission has been carried out in the coal-fired boiler. As a result, this paper is valuable to provide an information about the optimum position of SOFA and the mechanism by which the SOFA would affect NOx emission.

  • New way to effectively capture $CO_2$ in coal fired power plant is the combustion of coal using oxy-fuel technology. Combustion characteristics of Minco sub-bituminous coal at oxy-fuel conditions using TGA and drop tube furnace (DTF) were included activation energy about the char burnout, volatile yield and combustion efficiency of raw coal, the porosity of pyrolyzed char and fusion temperature of by-product ash. TGA result shows that the effect of $CO_2$ on combustion kinetics reduces activation energy by approximately 7 kJ/mol at air oxygen level(21% $O_2$) and decreases the burning time by approximately 16%. The results from DTF indicated similar combustion efficiency under $O_2/CO_2$ and $O_2/N_2$ atmospheres for equivalent $O_2$ concentration whereas high combustion efficiency under $O_2/N_2$ than $O_2/CO_2$ was obtained for high temperature of more than $1,100^{\circ}C$. Overall coal burning rate under $O_2/CO_2$ is decreased due to the lower rate of oxygen diffusion into coal surface through the $CO_2$ rich boundary layer. By-product ash produced under $O_2/CO_2$ and $O_2/N_2$ was similar IDT in irrelevant to $O_2$ concentration and atmospheres gas during the coal combustion.

  • This study was performed to analyze coal flames and measure tar and soot yields and structures of chars for two coals depending on the volatile content by the LFR(Laminar Flow Reactor) which can be applied to a variety of coal researches. The results show that volatile contents and oxygen concentration have significant influence on length and width of the soot cloud and it also indicate that the length and width of the cloud in condition of combustion decrease than those of pyrolysis atmosphere. Until the sampling height reach at 50 mm, the tar and soot yields of Berau (Sub-bituminous) coal contained relatively lots of volatile matters are less than those of Glencore A.P. (Bituminous) coal. On the other hand, tar and soot yields of Berau coal are higher than those of Glencore A.P. coal by reacted residual volatile matter. In addition, the images of samples obtained from the particle separation system of the sampling probe support for above results with the yields, and the pore development of char surface by devolatilization.

  • Two coals which have a quite different properties were selected to compare the combustion characteristics in a cyclone combustor. The capacity of the combustion test rig is about 75kW and total volume is 5.7 liters. The pulverized sample coals are well burned from fuel rich(air ratio 0.4) to fuel lean(airs ratio 1.6). Two different property coals show quite different patterns of ash collection in slag pot, dust separator and combustion chamber. Combustion temperature of subbituminous coal is about $100^{\circ}C$ lower than bituminous coal at the entire region, and in case of bituminous coal, hot spot appeared at the lower part and axial line of the combustion chamber.

  • The main objective of materials testing is to simulate in-situ field conditions as closely as possible, including loading conditions, climatic conditions, etc. Also, the test method should be easy, inexpensive, simple, and efficient to conduct to become an acceptable standard laboratory testing method for many agencies. Based on these reasons, a new test method employing repetitive axial loading with confinement was developed to evaluate the rutting(permanent deformation) of asphalt concrete. The new laboratory test protocol was developed based on the study of the various structural analysis and field data. This protocol divides asphalt layer(s) into three categories depending upon the depth. Different temperatures and vertical stress levels were used in these areas.

  • Assessing the handling properties of coal becomes a major issue for the operation of a fuel supply system in power plants, due to the increased types of coal imported into Korea. In this study, the cohesion strengths of 13 bituminous and sub-bituminous coals from different countries were tested by measuring the amount of force that leads to a failure of consolidated particles. The particle size was in the range of 0.1-2.8 mm, which represents the coarse particles before pulverization. While the cohesion strength was proportional to the compression force in the tested range, the effects of the surface moisture content and the weight fraction of fines were crucial for cohesive coals. At fixed conditions of surface moisture and particle size, large variations were found in the cohesion propensity between coals. For coals of 0.1-0.5 mm with the moisture added close to the critical value, cohesive coals had the density over $900kg/m^3$ after consolidation. The cohesion propensity was not correlated with the basic properties of coals with sufficient statistical significance.

  • It was investigated whether the scrap tire can be recycled as a construction material for controlling the frost heave of the ground. Some frost heave tests and a frost penetration depth test in the laboratory were performed on the weathered granite soil mitred with variable amount of scrap tire powder under the atmospheric temperature at -$17^{\circ}$ to find the basic effects of the scrap tire on the control of frost. The frost heave control layer of the crushed stone mixed with scrap tire chips directly below thin subbass in the bituminous pavement was found to be effective for practical use. And the equation for the required thickness of this frost heave control layer with freezing index was suggested.

  • Coal is the energy resource which is important with the new remarking energy resource. Coal combustion produces more NOx per unit of energy than any other major combustion technology. Pollutant emission associated with coal combustion will have a huge impact on the environment. Coal conversion has three processes which are drying, coal devolatilization and char oxidation. Coal devolatilization process is important because it has been shown that HCN which is converted from volatile N contributes 60 to 80% of the total NOx produced. This paper addresses mass release behavior of char, tar, gas and HCN in an experiment of Laminar Flow Reactor with two coals such as Roto middle coal (Sub-bituminous) and Anglo coal (Bituminous). The experiment is compared with the data predicted by CPD model for mass release of HCN about Roto south, Indominco, Weris creek and China orch coals. The results show that HCN increases as a function of decreasing the ratio of fixed carbon(FC)/ volatile matter(VM of the coals contain.)
