  • Bipolaris coicis, B. cynodontis, B. maydis and Curvularia lunata were leaf blight fungi detected from 45 seed samples of Job's tears and B. coicis was the predominant species in seed samples followed by C. lunata, B. cynodontis and B. maydis. When the seed components were plated on test tube agar, B. coicis and C. lunata were highly detected from invelucre, glume, endosperm and stamen, but not detected from plumule. Seed infection with B. coicis casued seed rot, coleoptile blight and seedling blight of Job's tears. Conidial characteristics of leaf blight fungi were as follows; B. cynodontis was fusiform, brown, slightly curved, 0~5 distoseptate, and 16.8-48$\times$7.2-16.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size; B. cynodontis was fusiform, brown, slightly curved, 0~8 distoseptate, and 16.8-72$\times$9.6-19.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$; B. maydis was fusiform, brown, distintly curved, 0~10 distoseptate, and 28.8-110.4$\times$12-21.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. C. Lunata was fusiform, brown, typically curved, 0~3 distoseptate, and 7.2-24$\times$4.8-12 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. B. coicis was highly pathogenic to Job's tears and corn, weakly pathogenic to rice, but not pathogenic to wheat and barley. c. lunata was highly pathogenic to Job's tears (No. 2), corn, wheat and barley, weakly pathogenic to Job's tears (No. 1), but not pathogenic to rice. All treatments were effective to inhibition of leaf blight fungi when carboram, benoram, fludioxonil, prochloraz, thioram, and tap water treated to infected seeds.

  • Nine species of Bipolaris, two species of Drechslera and two species of Exserohilum were identified from 66 isolates collected from leaf spots and leaf blights on gramineous hosts of field crops, grass pasture plants, turfgrasses and wild weeds in Korea in 1998. They included B. bicolor, B. coicis, B. cynodontis, B. maydis, B. oryzae, B. panici-miliacei, B. setariae, B. sorghicola, B. sorokiniana, D. dictyoides, D. graminea, E. oryzicola and E. turcicum. Of these, B. bicolor, B. sorghicola, D. dictyoides, and E. oryzicola were recorded for the first time in Korea.

  • Diseased leaves of Job's tears were collected at six locations in Korea to isolate and identify the pathogen causing leaf blight. Conidia were brown, fusoid, and slightly curved. They were $25{\sim}46{\times}10{\sim}15\;{\mu}m$ in size, and had mostly 4 septa which were characteristic of pseudosepta. A few conidia had slightly protruding hila, whereas most had no hilum. Conidial germ tubes were produced mostly from both polar end cells (bipolar), and progressed in semiaxial direction. When seedlings of Job's tears were inoculated with conidia, long, spindle-shaped, and brown lesions were produced on leaves, and entire leaves became blighted 15 days later. Based on the aggressiveness in pathogenicity, the isolates could be divided into two groups. Considering the mycological characteristics and pathogenicity of the fungus, the pathogen causing leaf blight of Job's tears was determined to be Bipolaris coicis (Nisikado) Shoemaker.

  • The perfect state of Bipolaris coicis, causing leaf blight of Job's tears, was in duced under in vitro conditions. Eighty nine isolates of the fungus were collected from 17 locations in Korea from 1994 to 1996. They were crossed on Sach's nutrient agar, on which a piece of rice straw was placed, and incubated at $25^{\circ}C$. Pseudothecia were produced only by certain combinations of compatible isolates. Although pseudothecia were usually produced on rice straw two weeks after incubation, asci and ascospores were observed only in a few pseudothecia examined. The pseudothecia were black and globose with protruding ostiolar beaks. The locules were filled with a mass of hyaline and filamentous pseudoparaphyses. Asci were cylindrical to clavate and straight or slightly curved. The ascus wall was bitunicate with short stipes. Ascospores were filiform, hyaline, and arranged parallel to slightly coiled in the asci, measuring $143-166.4{\times}2.6-3.8\;{\mu}m$. Perfect state of the fungus was identified as Cochliobolus nisikadoi (Tsuda, Ueyama & Nishihara Alcorn), based on the morphological characteristics.

  • An attempt was made to screen antifungal activities of Bacillus thuringiensis strains on various plant pathogens, Botryosphaeria dothidea, Diaporthe actinidiae, Botrytis cinerea, Glomerella cingulata, Colletorichum cocodes, Sclerotinia scierotiorum, Alternaria alternata, Helicobuidium mompa, Bipolaris coicis, Fusarium graminearum and Rhizoctosnia solani. Ten and forty-five strains of B. thuringiensis were isolated from animal feces in Korea and Japan, respectively. Inhibitory effects of the strains on the mycelial growth of the pathogens were examined on the mixed media of potato dextrose agar and nutrient agar. Approximately half of the strains inhibited the mycelial growth of one or more pathogens. Most of the pathogens were inhibited by any of the strains but Fusarium graminearum and Rhizoctonia solani were not inhibited at all. This is the first report that B. thuringiensis shows a potent antifungal activity on plant pathogens in Korea.
