  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify nursing students' perception of patient rights, their ethical values and biomedical ethics awareness, and to examine the factors affecting the nursing students' biomedical ethics awareness. Methods: The participants of this study were 273 nursing students in B and K metropolitan city. Data collection was conducted through the structured questionnaires from March 2 to March 25, 2016. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS WIN v 21.0. Results: The mean scores of nursing students' perception of patient rights, ethical values and biomedical ethics awareness were $4.56{\pm}0.38$, $3.26{\pm}0.31$, $2.91{\pm}0.20$, respectively. Biomedical ethics awareness was positively correlated with the nursing students' perceptions of patient rights (r=.38, p<.001) and ethical values (r=.25, p<.001). Factors affecting the nursing students' biomedical ethics awareness were the perception of patient rights (${\beta}=.36$, p<.001) and ethical values (${\beta}=.13$, p=.023). Conclusion: The results suggest that nursing educational program should include perception of patient rights and ethical values to foster biomedical ethics awareness for nursing students.

Results: The mean scores for the variables were 3.03 for perception of death, 2.92 for awareness of biomedical ethics, and 3.16 for attitude toward death with dignity. Positive correlations were observed between the perception of death and awareness of biomedical ethics(r=.172, p=.004). Negative correlations were observed between the perception of death and attitudes toward death and dignity(r=-.289, p<.001). The factor that most influenced the attitude toward death with dignity was the perception of death(𝛽=-.219, p<.001). Conclusion: Biomedical ethics education suitable for the job is needed to promote a positive attitude toward death with dignity by promoting a positive perception of death and improving awareness of biomedical ethics.

  • This study was conducted to identify the effects of the degree of death orientation, attitudes toward withdrawing life-sustaining treatment, and awareness of biomedical ethics on paramedic students' own biomedical ethics. The participants of this study were 228 paramedic students from a college located in D city. Data were collected from April to June 2019 through a self-report questionnaire. There was a positive correlation between awareness of biomedical ethics and attitude toward withdrawing life-sustaining treatment (r=.63, p<.001). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the factors affecting students' awareness of biomedical ethics were religion (β=.12, p=.018) and their attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment (β=.61, p<.001), with an explanatory power of 41.0%. Educational programs must focus on attitudes toward withdrawing life-sustaining treatment to improve paramedic students' awareness of biomedical ethics.

There were differences in biomedical ethics awareness by ethical education experience, grade, clinical practice experience, and ethical education willingness to attend. Also, major keywords analysed with biomedical ethics were withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, critical thinking, sexual attitude, nursing professionalism, and death perception. Study results can be used to provide basic data for preparing nursing ethics education in the future.

  • In the study, the moral sensitivity, moral distress, and biomedical ethics awareness levels of hospital nurses are examined, and the mediating effect of biomedical ethics awareness in the relationship between moral sensitivity and moral distress is verified. As the study subjects, 153 hospital nurses were selected from both university hospitals and general hospitals in S city and J city. Using the SPSS WIN 21.0 system, data analysis was conducted via t-tests, the Sheffe test, correlation analysis, multiple regression analyses, Sobel test. The average level of moral sensitivity experienced by the hospital nurses was 4.70(out of 7), moral distress was 62.80(out of 336), and biomedical ethics awareness was 2.21(out of 4). Moral distress had a static correlation with moral sensitivity and biochemical ethics awareness, and moral sensitivity had a static correlation with biomedical ethics awareness. Finally, biomedical ethics awareness showed a partial mediating effect in the relationship between moral sensitivity and moral distress. It is important to develop a biomedical ethics education program that can help hospital nurses to resolve moral issues, thereby improving moral sensitivity and diminishing their moral distress.
