Development Brief of A Body Area Network for Ubiquitous Healthcare : An Introduction to Ubiquitous Biomedical Systems Development Center

  • The fusion technology of small sensor and wireless communication was followed by various application examples of the embedded system, where the social infrastructural facilities and ecological environment were wirelessly monitored. In addition, this technology represents the primary application area being extended into the healthcare field. In this study, a body area network for ubiquitous healthcare is presented. More specifically this represents a wireless biomedical signal acquisition device characterized by small size, low power consumption, pre-processing and archiving capability. Using this device, a new method for monitoring vital signs and activity is created. A PDA-based wireless sensor network enables patients to be monitored during their daily living, without any constraints. Therefore, the proposed method can be used to develop Activities of Daily Living (ADL) monitoring devices for the elderly or movement impaired people. A medical center would be able to remotely monitor the current state of elderly people and support first-aid in emergency cases. In addition, this method will reduce medical costs in society, where the average life expectancy is increasing.

  • Cancer immunotherapy has been acknowledged as a new paradigm for cancer treatment, with notable therapeutic effects on certain cancer types. Despite their significant potential, clinical studies over the past decade have revealed that cancer immunotherapy has low response rates in the majority of solid tumors. One of the key causes for poor responses is known to be the relatively low immunogenicity of solid tumors. Because most solid tumors are immune desert 'cold tumors' with antitumor immunity blocked from the onset of innate immunity, combination therapies that combine validated T-based therapies with approaches that can increase tumor-immunogenicity are being considered as relevant therapeutic options. This review paper focuses on immunogenic cell death (ICD) as a way of enhancing immunogenicity in tumor tissues. We will thoroughly review how ICDs such as necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis can improve anti-tumor immunity and outline clinical trials targeting ICD. Finally, we will discuss the potential of ICD inducers as an adjuvant for cancer immunotherapy.

의식적인 손 운동을 통한 뇌기능 증진의 메커니즘에 관한 연구 (The Study of the Mechanism for Brain Function Improvement with Intentional Hand Movement)

  • 본 연구는 집중력, 기억력 및 학습 능력의 뇌기능 증진을 위한 의식적인 손 운동에 관련된 연구이다. 우선 효과적인 재활을 위한 손가락 운동 패턴을 연구하였다. 단순한 손가락 운동(Simple Finger Movement ; SFM) 패턴과 의식적인 손가락 운동(Intentional Finger Movement ; IFM)패턴을 비교하였다. 다음으로 각각 두 패턴 운동을 시켜 피험자의 집중력과 학습 능력의 증진을 검증하고자 한다. SFM 패턴과 IFM 패턴의 비교와 집중력과 학습 능력의 증진의 검증은 뇌파(mid $\alpha$파)를 이용하였다. 실험은 먼저 SFM 패턴의 운동을 시키고 다음에 IFM 패턴의 운동을 시키는 실험을 하였다. 결과적으로 IFM 패턴에서 mid $\alpha$ 파의 증가가 이루어졌음을 측정함으로써, IFM 패턴이 뇌의 집중력과 학습 능력을 증진시킨다는 결과를 얻었다.

Biomimetics of the extracellular matrix: an integrated three-dimensional fiber-hydrogel composite for cartilage tissue engineering

  • The native extracellular matrix (ECM) consists of an integrated fibrous protein network and proteoglycan-based ground (hydrogel) substance. We designed a novel electrospinning technique to engineer a three dimensional fiber-hydrogel composite that mimics the native ECM structure, is injectable, and has practical macroscale dimensions for clinically relevant tissue defects. In a model system of articular cartilage tissue engineering, the fiber-hydrogel composites enhanced the biological response of adult stem cells, with dynamic mechanical stimulation resulting in near native levels of extracellular matrix. This technology platform was expanded through structural and biochemical modification of the fibers including hydrophilic fibers containing chondroitin sulfate, a significant component of endogenous tissues, and hydrophobic fibers containing ECM microparticles.

  • In this study, we implement the color image processing algorithm to analyze the quantitative assessment of denticulus by computing spectral characteristics in HGB color domain. We can observe that we can utilize the normalized HGB color feature to assess the quantitative formation of denticulus.

  • 피부에 나타나는 난치성 질환인 백반증은 심리적인 위축감을 주어 정상적인 생활에 지장을 줄 수 있는 질병이다. 이에 따라서 본 연구에서는 피부에 나타나는 백반증의 진행 상태를 판단하기 위하여 L*a*b* 컬러 공간으로 변환된 피부 영상에 Otsu 임계값 설정 기법을 적용하여 백반증의 발병 영역을 자동으로 판별하는 알고리즘을 제안하였다.
