This research aimed at developing a technique for estimating the tree height using BRF (Bi-directional Reflectance Factor) through the clarification of the relation between shape of the tree crown and the tree height and the relations between the shape of the tree crown and BRF. This paper, reports the results of analyses of data acquired by field measurements done to clarify relation between crown shape and tree height.
Macroalgae has been strongly touted as an alternative biomass for biofuel production due to its higher photosynthetic efficiency, carbon fixation rate, and growth rate compared to conventional cellulosic plants. However, its unique carbohydrate composition and structure limits the utilization efficiency by conventional microorganisms, resulting in reduced growth rates and lower productivity. Nevertheless, recent studies have shown that it is possible to enable microorganisms to utilize various sugars from seaweeds and to produce some energy chemicals such as methane, ethanol, etc. This paper introduces the basic information on macroalgae and the overall conversion process from harvest to production of biofuels. Especially, we will review the successful efforts on microbial engineering through metabolic engineering and synthetic biology to utilize carbon sources from red and brown seaweed.
Algal vegetation in the subtidal zone between a small rock output and the Juckdo Island, eastern coast of Korea was investigated at several selected sites. The objectives of the survey were to descirbe the poorly known macroalgae community in this area and correlate the pattern of distribution as well as the change of zonatin with the environmental conditions. The water movement, light intensity and theinclinatin of substrate are considered as the environmental parameters. The upper and mid subtidal zones in sheltered area with less steep rocky surface are dominated by large brown algae Srgassum confusum; in the exposed area are characterised by species of Costaria costata. In the lower subtidal zone, the difference of vegetaton between the sheltered and the exposed areas is not recognized. At this depth the light intensity is an important ecological factor. Six narrow algal zones occur in the sheltered area, whereas two broad belts occur in the exposed area. the biomass value is 4 times greater in the sheltered area than in the exposed area.
Green roof's performance in reducing stormwater runoff has been reported by numerous studies. Nonetheless, the roles of low growing vegetation in influencing stormwater runoff reduction on green roofs have been greatly overlooked. This paper describes an experiment investigating the influence of low growing vegetation in the reduction of tropical stormwater runoff on extensive green roofs. Three types of locally occurring native vegetation and one non-native Sedum species were selected (fern, herb, grass and succulent) for the experiment. Stormwater runoff reduction performance from different low growing species was done by measuring excess water runoff from the simulated green roof modules. The results show significant differences in stormwater runoff reduction from different types of vegetation. Fern was the most effective in reducing stormwater runoff, followed by herb, Sedum and grass. Vegetative characters that are found to attribute towards the performance of stormwater runoff are rooting density, structure, density, leaf type, and vegetation biomass.
From several industrial wastewaters, 14 bacterial strains which degrade benzene, toluene, o-xylene, m-xylene, or p-xylene (BTX) were obtained. These strains were characterized as to their species composition and the substrate range, kinetic parameters and the substrate interactions were investigated. Although BTX components have a similar chemical structure, isolated strains showed different substrate ranges and kinetic parameters. None of the strains could degrade all of BTX components and most of them showed an inhibition (Haldane) kinetics on BTX, BTX mixtures were removed under inhibitory substrate interactions with variation in the intensity of inhibition. For a complete degradation of BTX, a defined mixed culture containing three different types of patyways was constructed and all of the BTX components were simultaneously degraded with the totla removal rate of 225.69 mg/g biomass/h Judging from the results, the obtained mixed culture seems to be useful for the treatment of BTX-contaminated wastewater or groundwater as well as for the removal of BTX from the contaminated air stream.

Immobilization of biosorbent is very important for application to real wastewater treatment process because biosorbent itself does not have enough tough structure. Therefore, resent research on heavy metal biosorption using biomass has been focused on its efficient immobilization method. To improve the mechanical strength of freely biosorbent, many immobilization methods have been suggested for applications to the biosorbent such as microorganisms or polysaccharides. In this study, various immobilization methods such as adsorption, covalent binding, entrapment, encapsulation, and crosslinking will be introduced.
Community dynamics of benthic macroinvertebrates in response to natural disturbances (flooding and water temperature) were investigated in the Suyong and Soktae Streams in Busan from October 1997 to September 1998. Oigochaeta and Chironomus, organic polluted indicators, were dominant and various taxa were observed at the study sites. The density and biomass of two dominant taxa increased in warm months while the indicators were washed away in the flooding season. From October to February when the water temperature was less than $15^{\circ}C$, Oligochaeta appeared to be dominant at the Soktae Stream. In contrast various taxa were collected at the Suyong stream. The densities of Oligochaeta and Chironomus increased at the Soktae and the Suyong streams in March. Due to the big flooding in April, the density of dominant taxa decreased abruptly. The community structure showed differences patterns in the flooding season at two streams from June to August. In the Soktae stream, the density increased in August. The reverse patterns were observed in the Suyong stream, washing out in June followed by slow recovery of densities in the fellowing months. Density and biomass showed relatively higher correlations in most taxa. CCA (Canonocial Correspondence Analysis) showed that taxa was different response to different environmental factors.
Although biomass syngas is very low calorific gas, it is utilized by means of dual fuel combustion technology in the fields of industrial furnace and boiler as a substitute oil technology. The basic structure of duel fuel combustion burner is designed so that low caloric gas fuel is supplied around an oil burner in the middle. In the present study, three types of mixing burners were manufactured to conduct performance experiment. Low caloric gas was evenly distributed around the oil burner and the method of changing the angle of gas nozzle was applied. CO generation decreased according to the increase of the amount of air for combustion. In addition, the shapes and colors of flame changed according to the proportions of gas and oil used. Remained flame after combustion was from the lack of atomization at the exit of oil burner. Although it was difficult to maintain the optimum air ratio due to different required air ratio for oil and syngas, stable combustion was able to maintained within excess oxygen concentration of 4.7~8.2%. From this study, it was shown that the oil atomization at the exit of fuel oil nozzle was promoted by the increased rate of syngas combustion and the CO concentration in flue gas lower than only fuel oil combustion.
Fish assemblages associated with eelgrass beds and unvegetated area were compared based on specimens collected every month in Jindong Bay. The common fish species were Hexagrammos otakii, Acanthopagrus schlegeli, Lateolabrax japonicus, Pholis nebulosa, P. fangi, Leiognathus nuchalis, Repomucenus valenciennei, and Acanthogobius flavimanus. H. otakii, A. schlegeli, P. nebulosa and L. japonicus were higher abundance in an eelgrass bed than unvegetated area, whereas P. fangi, R. valenciennei and A. flavimanus were higher in unvegetated area. Sillago japonicus, Hippocampus japonica, Takifugu niphobles, Pseudoblennius percoides, Sebastes inermis, Syngnathus schlegeli, Sebastes schlegeli were found in an eelgrass bed, but not in unvegetated area. Most of fish species were primarily small fish species or juveniles of fish species in an eelgrass bed, while larger fish species were found in unvegetated area. The eelgrass bed in Jindong Bay seem to play a nursery role for fishes. Seasonal variations in both species composition and abundance were large in two habitats; higher number of species and individuals occurred May 2002, and April 2002 to July 2002, while biomass was the highest in April 2002 and July 2002. Fish numbers as well as biomass were lowest in January 2002. Species richness, number of individuals and biomass of fishes in an eelgrass bed were significantly higher than those of in unvegetated area. These result suggest that differences in fish species richness and abundances are primarily related to habitat structure. Different habitat preferences were evidenced for the juveniles and adult of several fish species.
