This study is analyzed the financial feasibility of biomass power plant in China in terms of fuel marginal price of biomass power plant. The range of fuel price is 150~300 RMB and IRR(Internal Rate of Return), NPV(Net Present Value), DSCR(Debt Service Coverage Ratio) and operation time are analyzed by 10 RMB from 150 RMB. The sensitivity of IRR went down by 1.35 on average. The sensibility of NPV showed big difference by 20% on 260 RMB and 270 RMB. In addition, DSCR of loan is at 1.0 at raw cost of 242 RMB and at lower than 1.0 when the raw cost over 242 RMB. It means that the pay-off of principal and interest of the loan is expected to be difficult in that case. The operation time of power plant should be 88% against standard operation time to maintain over 1.0 of DSCR. Therefore, the factors affecting the cost of raw material to build the power plant and to operate it should be prioritized.

Many countries have conducted extensive studies for biomass co-firing to enhance the durability of reactor on high-temperature corrosion. However, due to the complicated mechanisms of biomass co-firing, there have been limitations in accurately determining the current state of corrosion and predicting the potential risk of corrosion of power plant. In order to solve this issue, this study introduced Lab-scale corrosion system to analyze the corrosion characteristics of the A213 T91 material under the biomass co-firing conditions. The corrosion status of the samples was characterized using SEM/EDS analysis and mass loss measurement according to various biomass co-firing conditions such as corrosion temperature, $SO_2$ concentration, and corrosion time. As a result, the corrosion severity of A213 T91 material was gradually increased with the increase of $SO_2$ concentration in the reactor. When $SO_2$ concentration was changed from 0 ppm to 500 ppm, both corrosion severity and oxide layer thickness were proportionally increased by 15% and 130%, respectively. The minimum corrosion was observed when the corrosion temperature was $450^{\circ}C$. As the temperature was increased up to $650^{\circ}C$, the faster corrosion behavior of A213 T91 was observed. A213 T91 was observed to be more severely corroded by the effect of chlorine, resulting in faster corrosion rate and thicker oxide layer. Interestingly, corrosion resistance of A213 T91 tended to gradually decrease rather than increases as the oxide layer was formed. The results of this study is expected to provide necessary research data on boiler corrosion in biomass co-firing power plants.
Co-firing of renewable fuel in coal fired boilers is an attractive option to mitigate $CO_2$ emissions, since it is a relatively low cost option for efficiently converting renewable fuel to electricity by adding biomass as partial substitute of coal. However, it would cause reducing plant efficiency and operational flexibility, and increasing operation and capital cost associated with handling and firing equipment of renewable fuels. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of biomass co-firing on $CO_2$ emission and capital/operating cost. Wood pellet, PKS (palm kernel shell), EFB (empty fruit bunch) and sludge are considered as renewable fuels for co-firing with coal. Several approaches by the co-firing ratio are chosen from previous plant demonstrations and commercial co-firing operation, and they are evaluated and discussed for $CO_2$ reduction and cost estimation.
This study is intended to clarify the structure and seasonal dynamics of warm tolerant benthic marine algal community in Korea. The species composition and biomass of marine algae at the discharge canal of Wolseong nuclear power plant on the East Coast of Korea were investigated seasonally from February 2001 to October 2005. As a result, 43 species (6 blue-green, 8 green, 9 brown and 20 red algae) of marine algae were found at the discharge canal during the past five years. In general, the number of species observed was abundant during winter to summer and less in autumn. Lyngbya confervoides and Enteromorpha compressa always occurred at the discharge canal during the past five years, and Oscillatoria brevis, Padina arborescens and Caulacanthus ustulatus were common species found more than 80% frequency during the study period. Seasonal fluctuations of mean biomass were 2-659 g dry wt m–2 and dominant species in biomass were Caulacanthus ustulatus (contribution to a total biomass proportion 37%), Enteromorpha compressa (26%) and Padina arborescens (24%). Results showed that, in the floristic composition, the green algae occurred as common algal group at the discharge canal of Wolseong nuclear power plant. In the quantitative aspect, however, the red algae such as Caulacanthus ustulatus and Ahnfeltiopsis flabelliformis appeared as predominant group at the discharge canal, in contrast to Kori nuclear power plant where there was a definite green algal dominance. Differences in algal communities developed at the discharge canals of three nuclear power plants on the East Coast of Korea can probably be related to local environmental factors.
Marine algal flora and community structure were examined seasonally at four study sites around Taean Power Plant, Korea from Jan. to Nov. 2006. A total of 73 algae species (12 green, 9 brown, 52 red) and 1 marine plant were identified. The number of species was maximal at the power plant Discharge (57 species) site followed by Hakampo (46 species), Intake (28 species) and Breakwater (15 species) sites during the study period. The average biomass in dry weight varied from 13.12g/m2 at Intake to 69.60g/m2 at Hakampo. Dominant and sub dominant species in terms of biomass were Gelidium divaricatum - Ulva pertusa at Intake, Chondria crassicaulis - Ulva pertusa at Discharge, Corallin a pilulifera - Chondrus ocellatus at Breakwater, and Corallina pilulifera - Sargassum thunbergii at Hakampo. Species richness of warm tolerant and green algae were greater at Discharge site than Hakampo, showing similar species richness. However, community indices were not distinguishable between Discharge and other study sites. In conclusion, species richness and biomass of seaweeds were greater at Discharge site compared to intake and breakwater sites, and the abundance of warm tolerant and green algal species were higher than Hakampo.
Recently, biomass application for energy is getting more interests from many countries since biomass is widely available over the nation wide, whereas fossil fuels are produced in several limited regions. Recognizing the importance, government is promoting renewable energy use in Korea. The locational characteristics of the existing biomass potential directly can be used to decide scale of power plant for local agricultural facility. Although there are a few studies on feasible biomass potential in local areas, it is expected that both government and commercial sectors recognize the potential of biomass energy and the importance of reducing greenhouse gases. When planning biomass energy systems, biomass price is determined by the costs of collection, transportation, chipping, drying if required. In this paper investigates the economic and spatial characteristic of biomass location by land use map. However typical area of each categories in local region is not correct to agricultural census data. Therefore we concerned about how to calculate feasible biomass potential which it can be describing total amount of plant scale, and to match both of data. Even though its spatial distribution, in rural area in Korea, to expand biomass energy programs in the area, government serve to find areas of higher biomass production with suitable locations for plants to convert to bio-energy in order to increase the usage of renewable energy.
One of domestic power generation companies, Korea East-West Power Corporation(EWP) had no performance in overseas business just two short years ago. However, EWP has accomplished breakthrough results with the profit of KRW 17.8 billion in 2010, only overseas business part. With overseas power plant growing fast, there is a possibility that EWP may face the limitation of sustainable growth with the current low income structure, which is mainly focused on commissioning and power plant management. Accordingly, this study was made on overseas biomass plant business participation plan through the establishment of joint venture. The characteristics of a joint venture establishment was searched, choosing business partner; the ideas of how to organize a joint venture was drawn, what the role of each partner in joint venture is, and what proper capital share is; and chose business field, considering changing global energy mix, renewable energy market scale, and growth prospects. Considering government policy for renewable energy vitalization and renewable energy market share, We chose the European union as a market to which our business entered.
Utilization of biomass as a substitute fuel for conventional energy systems have been grown larger everyday in the world. In particular, co-firing of biomass in a large coal power plant are common in Korea after the introduction of RPS since 2012, and the application of biomass-derived fuel is now spreading to district heating and power, industrial energy supply, and transportation sectors. For biomass to energy, appropriate conversion process is needed to satisfy the fuel requirements of a specific energy system. In this study, various kinds of thermochemical conversion technologies will be presented for renewable fuel productions from biomass.
This paper is the second part of a literature review describing the current status of biomass energy use in the USA. The bioenergy technologies that convert biomass resources to a form of energy were presented, in particular focused on existing coal fired boiler, high efficiency gasification combined cycle. We presented latest biomass power energy supply, economic issues such as its production and plant investment cost in the Part I. In the Part II, our review summarized policy and market issues for electricity consumers, benefits from biomass power which could offer an alternative to conventional energy sources in the form of environmental, rural economic growth, and national energy security in the USA.

Torrefaction technologies convert assorted biomass feedstocks into energy-concentrated, carbon neutral fuel that is economically transported and easily ground for blending with fossil coals at numerous power plants around the world without needs to retrofit. Utilization of torrefied biomass in conventional electric generating units may be an increasingly attractive alternative for electricity generation as aging power plants in the world need to be upgraded or improved. This paper examines the economic feasibility of torrefaction in different scenarios by modeling torrefaction plants producing 136,078 t/year (150,000 ton/year) biocoal from wood and corn stover. The utilization of biocoal blends in existing coal-fired power plants is modeled to determine the demand for this fuel in the context of emerging policies regulating emissions from coal in the U.S. setting. Opportunities to co-locate torrefaction facilities adjacent to corn ethanol plants and coal-fired power plants are explored as means to improve economics for collaborating businesses. Life cycle analysis was conducted in parallel to this economic study and was used to determine environmental impacts of converting biomass to biocoal for blending in coal-fired power plants as well as the use of substantial flows of off-gasses produced in the torrefaction process. Sensitivity analysis of the financial rates of return of the different businesses has been performed to measure impacts of different factors, whether input prices, output prices, or policy measures that render costs or rewards for the businesses.
