Derivatives (microcrystalline chitin, carboxymethylchitin, acetylchitin, N-acetylchitosan, ethylchitosan and chitosansulfate) of chitin and chitosan were synthesized, and the physicochemical properties of the derivatives were compared with those of chitin and chitosan. Carboxymethylchitin was soluble in water or acetic acid, whereas chitosan and ethylchitosan were soluble in acetic acid alone. The water binding capacity of N-acetylchitosan was two fold higher than that of chitin. Lipid binding capacity of carboxymethylchitin was the highest, holding 1800%, and that of chitin was the lowest, holding 511% among the derivatives. Carboxymethylchitin among the derivatives showed the highest emulsifying capacity, however chitin and chitosan didn't produce emulsions. Dye binding capacity of acetylchitin was the highest, holding 0.93 mg dye/g sample (Blue R-250) and 0.96 mg dye/g sample (Red No. 2). It was concluded that carboxymethylchitin is a good emulsifier and N-acetylchitosan, chitosansulfate and chitosan are suitable for use as dye absorbents.
Purpose: This study used raw data from the fifth (2010-2012) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) to assess the relationship between vitamin D level and glycemic control of diabetes, and to provide basic data about the use of vitamin D for preparation of a treatment plan for diabetes in South Korea. Methods: For this study, data of 1,713 diabetes from KNHANES (2010-2012) were used. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program, and complex sample frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, complex sample cross analysis, complex sample general linear regression, and complex sample logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: It was found that the poor glycemic control group among the diabetes subjects had significantly lower level of blood vitamin D than the good glycemic control group. Factors affecting glycemic control included drinking, vitamin D levels, hypertriglyceridemia, duration of diabetes, and treatment of diabetes. Also, diabetics with vitamin D deficiency or shortage showed 3.55- and 2.61-times higher odds ratios, respectively, to be diagnosed as the poor glycemic control group than diabetics without vitamin D deficiency or shortage. Conclusion: This study is significant because it provides rationale and basic data about the use of vitamin D for preparation of a treatment plan for diabetes in South Korea by assessing the dependence of glycemic control on the vitamin D level of diabetics. Additionally, future studies are necessary to determine the appropriate concentration of vitamin D for diabetes prevention and treatment to prevent the side effects of excessive supplementation.
Purpose: This study aimed to compare the differences in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome between menopausal women and women of childbearing age and to determine the risk of metabolic syndrome among women in each group depending on whether they eat alone. Methods: Data of 1,813 women from the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016) were used. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0, and complex sample frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, complex sample cross analysis, complex sample general linear regression, and complex sample logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: According to the results of the study, there was no difference in the prevalence and risk of metabolic syndrome according to the presence of companions during meals between women of childbearing age and post-menopausal women, but there was a difference in health behavior. In other words, women of childbearing age who ate alone had a lot of experience of drinking, and menopausal women who ate alone did not tend to make any efforts to control their weight and did not perform aerobic exercise. In particular, the negative health behavior of menopausal women who ate alone increased the risk of prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: The findings indicate that, for women who eat alone, interventions to prevent metabolic syndrome should be differentiated before and after menopause. Therefore, it is suggested to offer an educational program to prevent metabolic syndrome in women of childbearing age as well as provide regular assessments to diagnose metabolic syndrome and health behavior improvement programs for menopausal women.
These biologic test procedures are designed to test the suitability of P.V.C. made in Korea intended for parenteral preparation, which were based on the U.S. Pharmacopeia XIX "Biologic Test-Plastic Container", Official from July 1, 1975. Healthy adult human blood and rabbits weighing 2\ulcorner.2Kg were used for test materials. Sample P.V.C. were sampled from the medical equipments made in Korea randomly and Control P.V.C. were sampled from the standardized Cobe and Polystan P.V.C. tubes. P.V.C. extract was prepared from a homogeneous P.V.C. samples by incubating 60 square centimeters of the sample per 20 millimeters of sterile pyrogen-free saline at 70\ulcorner for 72 hours or autoclaving at 120\ulcorner for 1 hour. The Implantation Test was designed to evaluate the reaction of living tissue to the plastic by the method of the implantation of the Sample itself into animal tissue. The Systemic Injection Test, the Intracutaneous Test, and the remainders were designed to determine the biological response of animals to plastics by the single-dose injection of specific extracts prepared from a Sample. The results are as follows; 1.Implantation Test - No significant difference for reactions was noted between the Sample treated animal and the Control after 72 hours of implantation. 2.Systemic Toxicity Injection Test - No sign of toxicity and/or death immediately after injection and at 4, 24, 48 hours respectfully after injection. 3.Intracutaneous Test - None of the animals treated with the Sample showed a significantly greater reaction than the observed in the animals treated with Blank. 4.Pyrogen Assay-Only one animal treated with the Sample showed the maximal rise of rectal temperature about 0.2\ulcorner after 3 hours of injection, but remainders showed no change. 5.Hemolytic Index - The positive Control tube of distilled water exhibited complete hemolysis while the negative Control tube and P.V.C. extract were negative demonstrating no hemolysis. 6.Cell Morphology of Erythrocytes and Leukocytes on Stored, Heparinized Human Blood -- There was no significant difference in the morphology of either the Control or Sample extract. 7.Clotting Mechanism of Human Blood in vitro - After allowing to the P.V.C. extract at room temperature for 5 Hours and at 10\ulcorner for 24 hours, there was no appreciable difference in Prothrombin Time under these conditions. 8.Clotting Mechanism of Rabbit in vivo - At the termination of 5 days after intraperitoneal injection of the P.V.C. extract, no significant changes in Clotting Time were observed. According to the above results, it could be concluded that the P.V.C. made in Korea was acceptable for parenteral preparation, especially treated with physiologic saline and/or human blood.man blood.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of rat intestinal ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitor ; methanol(80%), ethanol(80%) and $dH_2O$ extract of Schizandra chinensis in Korea(KS : Schizandra chinensis in Korea) and China(CS : Schizandra chinensis in China). When the final concentration was 1 $mg/m{\ell}$ for each sample(KS and CS), MeOH extract of KS($IC_{50}$ 1.62 mg/ml) showed 46.8%, EtOH extract of KS($IC_{50}$ 1.48 mg/ml) showed 47.4%, $dH_2O$ extract of KS($IC_{50}$ 1.72 mg/ml) showed 46.3% and MeOH extract of CS($IC_{50}$ 8.35 mg/ml) showed 13.3%, EtOH extract of CS($IC_{50}$ 8.05 mg/ml) showed 16%, $dH_2O$ extract of CS($IC_{50}$ 8.37 mg/ml) showed 11.54% of inhibiter for p-nitrophenyl ${\alpha}$, D-glucopyranoside ${\alpha}-glcosidase$ activity, respectively, And the contents of total phenol, flavonoid of Schizandra chinensis were measured. When the final concentration was 1 $mg/m{\ell}$ for each sample(KS and CS), total phenol and flavonoid in KS were higher than CS, respectively.

Benthic macroinvertebrate communities collected from eight different streams in South Korea were analyzed to compare community and biological indices across different levels of water pollution. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) was utilized to provide overview on association of the proposed indices. The sample sites were accordingly clustered according to the gradient of pollution on the SOM. While the general trends of the indices were commonly observable according to different levels of pollution, the detailed differences among the indices were also illustrated on the SOM. The conventional diversity and evenness indices tended to be high even though the water quality state was poor representing relatively weak gradient at polluted sites, while the index presenting the saprobic degree such as family biotic index showed the stronger gradient at the polluted area and was robust to present the gradient. Our results also confirmed the general characterization of two indices: The Shannon index is more strengthened by the number of species occurring at the sample sites, while the Simpson index is more influenced by the degree of evenness among the species. The patterning based on the SOM was efficient in comparatively characterizing the proposed indices to present ecological states and water quality.
5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is an antimetabolite anticancer agent active against many types of solid tumors. Tegafur (TF), a prodrug of 5-FU, is frequently used in combination with uracil as dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) inhibitory fluoropyrimidine. We studied the stability of 5-FU and TF in biological fluids of rats and determined their bioavailability (BA) and excretion into bile, and urine. The drug concentrations were analyzed by an HPLC method. At room temperature, there was a 14-30% decrease in the concentration of 5-FU and TF in bile, urine, and plasma specimen at 10 and $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ over 240 min. No significant difference was noted among the sample types or between two different concentrations of 10 and $100{\mu}g/ml$. The decrease in drug concentration was significantly less in samples kept on ice (6-12%) for both drugs. These data indicate that biological fluid samples containing 5-FU or TF in plasma, urine, or bile should be placed on ice during the sample collection. Following these storage guidelines, samples were collected after administration 50 mg/kg of each drug via i.v. or oral route. BA was 1.5 folds greater for TF (60%) than that of 5-FU (42%). Approximately 0.52 and 3.3% of the i.v. doses of 5-FU and TF was excreted into bile, respectively. Renal clearance of 5-FU was about 16% of its total body clearance. These results suggest that instability of 5-FU and TF in biological fluids should be considered in pharmacokinetic or pharmacogenomic studies.
Specification and heavy metal contents of canned seafoods packed in oil were investigated. 30 species of canned tuna were classified by 4 groups as follow; group (sample codes, 1-10) composed of tuna and oil only, group (11-18) composed of tuna, vegetable and oil, group (19-27) composed of tuna, sauce and oil, and group (28-30) composed of tuna, vegetable, sauce and oil. Commercial canned shellfish packed in oil were mainly produced from sea mussel (sample codes, 31 and 32) and oyster (33-35). Can bodies of canned tuna were made by tin-plate, and used c-enamel or aluminium-paste as coating materials. In pH values of canned tuna, sample codes 1-10 (pH 5.55-5.69) and 19-27 (pH 5.17-5.85) were higher than sample codes 11-18 (pH 4.95-5.43) and 28-30 (pH 5.20-5.38). There was no difference in salinity (1.3-1.9%) and vacuum degree (15-18 mmHg) among canned samples. Heavy metal contents of canned seafoods ranged from 1.04-9.03 ppm for Sn, and 0.17-0.68 ppm for Pb. Those values are below the permitted range (less than 150 ppm for Sn and 2 ppm for Pb).
In this study, the canadian peat moss extract was purified by a supercritical 2 using three different conditions and assessed its biological activities. Peat moss was extracted by acid-alkaline extraction method (sample 1) and purified by a supercritical $CO_2$ at $40^{\circ}C$ under pressure of 100 bar (sample 2), 120 bar (sample 3) or 150 bar (sample 4). We evaluated the antioxidant activities of the samples by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging, $Fe^{2+}$/ascorbate (FTC) and 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) methods. The antioxidant activities were examined by comparing the results with that of ascorbic acid as a positive control. Sample 3 showed relatively higher DPPH radical-scavenging activities than other samples. The antioxidant activity by FIC method exhibited similar results as the DPPH radical-scavenging activities. On the other hand, sample 2 showed higher antioxidant activity measured by TBA method of all. The whitening effects of the samples were examined using mushroom tyrosinase and B16F10 melanoma cells. Sample 3 exhibited overall significant whitening effects, however, other samples showed relatively lower effects. These results suggest that the peat moss extract purified by a supercritical 2 could be used as a cosmetic ingredient for the anti-aging and whitening effects.
Clinical laboratory order communication system was developed to run fast and effective laboratory tests at the Chungbuk National University Hospital. The present system incorporated with the main Hospital Management Information System accepts :aboratory orders, classifies them based on the predefined logical system, and outputs various practical informations for the user. These assist sample taking, sample management, and work plan organization. A special care was taken to the sample management by introducing the bar code system. The system was written in the INFOS hierarchical database and COBOL, and is currently in the practical use for both in - and out-ward patients. The present system enabled fast and effective data communication as well as reducing the time and man power indispensable when the manual slips are used for order communication.
