Colloidal coating solution was prepared to enhance the hydrophilic property of the film surface. Water and ethanol were used as the dispersion media and (glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPS) as a binder in the colloidal silica coatings. Ethylene diamine was added to the colloidal silica solution as the curing agent. The colloidal silica solution was regarded as a hard-sphere suspension model with low volume fraction of the silica particles. Rheological properties of the silica suspensions modified with GPS have been investigated as a function of pH and concentration. The acidic solution showed high viscosity change by fast hydrolysis reaction and adsorption of the organic binders on the surface of silica particles. However, the hydrolysis was slow at the basic condition and the binders combined with themselves by condensation. The viscosity change was smallest at pH 7. The viscosity increased with the curing time after adding ethylenediamine, and the increase of viscosity at low pH was higher than that at high pH. The hydrophilic properties of the coating film were investigated by the contact angle of water and film surface. The smallest contact angle was shown under the strong acidic condition of pH 2.

Nanotechnology is of great importance to molecular biology and medicine because life processes are maintained by the action of a series of molecular nanomachines in the cell machinery. Recent advances in nanoscale materials that possess emergent physical properties and molecular organization hold great promise to impact human health in the diagnostic and therapeutic arenas. In order to be effective, nanomaterials need to navigate the host biology and traffic to relevant biological structures, such as diseased or pathogenic cells. Moreover, nanoparticles intended for human administration must be designed to interact with, and ideally leverage, a living host environment. Inspired by nature, we use peptides to transfer biological trafficking properties to synthetic nanoparticles to achieve targeted delivery of payloads. In this talk, development of nanoscale materials will be presented with a particular focus on applications to three outstanding health problems: bacterial infection, cancer detection, and traumatic brain injury. A biodegradable nanoparticle carrying a peptide toxin trafficked to the bacterial surface has antimicrobial activity in a pneumonia model. Trafficking of a tumor-homing nanoprobes sensitively detects cancer via a high-contrast time-gated imaging system. A neuron-targeted nanoparticle carrying siRNA traffics to neuronal populations and silences genes in a model of traumatic brain injury. Unique combinations of material properties that can be achieved with nanomaterials provide new opportunities in translational nanomedicine. This framework for constructing nanomaterials that leverage bio-inspired molecules to traffic diagnostic and therapeutic payloads can contribute on better understanding of living systems to solve problems in human health.
The effects of ultra-fine pulverization on the physicochemical properties of rice starch (RS) were investigated using a high impact planetary mill. After pulverization, RVA characteristics, peak viscosity, break down, and set back values of RS decreased from 274.75 to 9.42 RVU, 214.46 to 6.17 RVU, and 87.80 to 17.00 RVU, respectively. The pasting properties also changed significantly. X-Ray diffractogram revealed RS had four A-type peaks, which disappeared after pulverization. The peak temperature and gelatinization enthalpy of RS using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were 13.99 J/g at $75.14^{\circ}C$, whereas the pulverized RS (PRS) had two peaks, 0.13 J/g at $63.88^{\circ}C$ and 1.23 J/g at $101.24^{\circ}C$. DSC measurement showed the retrogradation degree of PRS was lower than that of RS after storage at 4 and $25^{\circ}C$. The enzymatic (${\alpha}$-amylase) digestibilities of RS and PRS were 72.7 and 77.3%, respectively.

Twenty-six japonica and 19 Tongil type milled rices were grouped based on water uptake rate at $23^{\circ}C$ and interrelationships between starch properties and hydration group were investigated. There were no significant differences in relative crystallinity, transmittance increase rate of 0.1% starch suspension and soluble amylose between japonica and Tongil type rices. The gel volume of starch n 3M KSCN solution of Tonsil type rice starch was significantly higher than that of japonica one. However, no correlations were observed between starch properties and hydration groups.

Medical imaging techniques have evolved to expand our ability to visualize new contrast information of electrical, optical, and mechanical properties of tissues in the human body using noninvasive measurement methods. In particular, electrical tissue property imaging techniques have received considerable attention for the last few decades since electrical properties of biological tissues and organs change with their physiological functions and pathological states. We can express the electrical tissue properties as the frequency-dependent admittivity, which can be measured in a macroscopic scale by assessing the relation between the time-harmonic electric field and current density. The main issue is to reconstruct spectroscopic admittivity images from 10 Hz to 1 MHz, for example, with reasonably high spatial and temporal resolutions. It requires a solution of a nonlinear inverse problem involving Maxwell's equations. To solve the inverse problem with practical significance, we need deep knowledge on its mathematical formulation of underlying physical phenomena, implementation of image reconstruction algorithms, and practical limitations associated with the measurement sensitivity, specificity, noise, and data acquisition time. This paper discusses a number of issues in electrical tissue property imaging modalities and their future directions.

Human plasma low density lipoprotein(LDL) is the main carrier for cholesterol, and recent studies suggest the normal LDL can be readily oxidized by free radical and not interact with LDL receptor. Lipoprotein pariticles are consisted of lipid andprotein, and fatty acids of lipoproteins are prone to oxidation. LDL particles readily undergo oxidative modification by copper. From the results, oxidized LDL altered its biological properties. A marked increase in the electrophoretic mobility of LDl on agarose gel indicated that negative surface charge of the LDL particles was increased. Also, the results from the HPLC showed that oxidized LDL was degraded into several polypeptides nonenzymatically. Degradation tests which measured the amount of 5-IAF labelled oxidized LDL were carried out by monocyte and hepatocyte cell culture. Hepatocyte cell culture of modified LDL did not show consistent pattern. However, binding rate of modified LDL with HMDM(human monocyte derived macrophage) was enhanced with oxidation, but was retarded by addition of antioxidants(hyaluronic acid, vitamin A, vitamin E). Also comparisons of oxidized-LDL, acetyl-LDL and MDA-LDL showed significant differences in the chemical properteis and binding affinity to HMDM. Thus, modificaition of normal LDL altered its biological properties.
In this paper, basic study of diagnostic device development for early detection of cancer, we present the optical property measurements of 12 histologically classified biological tissue and blood specimens in order to determine whether significant optical contrast exists for detection of disease(cancer). In vitro, optical properties of each 630nm, 660nm, 780n, 880nm and 940nm shows consistent changes in effective absorbtion coefficients, ${\mu}$$\_$${\alpha}$/ with tissue classification of pig an chicken and human blood according to the 27.3%, 35.4%, 45.6% and 59.1% of HCT. We found differences in optical properties at each of specific wavelengths and histologically classified biological tissue.
The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used as an implant material due to its higher fatigue strength and strengthto-weight ratio compared to pure titanium, excellent corrosion resistance, and bone-like properties that promote osseointegration. For rapid osseointegration, the adhesion between the titanium surface and cellular biomolecules is crucial because adhesion, morphology, function, and proliferation are influenced by surface characteristics. Polymeric peptides and similar coating technologies have limited effectiveness, prompting a demand for alternative materials. There is growing interest in 2D nanomaterials, such as MoS2, for good corrosion resistance and antibacterial, and bioactive properties. However, to coat MoS2 thin films onto titanium, typically a low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis method is required, resulting in the synthesis of films with a toxic 1T@2H crystalline structure. In this study, through high-temperature annealing, we transformed them into a non-toxic 2H structure. The implant coating technique proposed in this study has good corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties.
The effect of citric acid on rice starch gelatinization and low-temperature (4 ℃) storage was studied in order to produce rice cake with a lower retrogradation rate. A citric acid solution in the ratio of 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% (w/w) of the water used during production was utilized. The gelatinization properties, gel strength, thermal properties, and texture analysis were evaluated to determine the retrogradation rate. The result showed that acid hydrolysis occurred in samples treated with citric acid. Thus, increasing citric acid decreased gelatinization temperature (58.63±1.98 to 45.84±1.24 ℃). The moduli of elasticity increased with increasing citric acid concentration, indicating an increased gel strength. Thermal analysis of starch showed that the onset, peak, and conclusion temperatures of retrogradation were increased significantly with the storage period and decreased with citric acid concentration. After 72 h of low-temperature storage (4 ℃), the retrogradation rate was lowest in the rice cake with 1.5% citric acid solution, with an increased ratio of 12.01 to 13.60% compared to the control sample, with a ratio of 12.99 to 43.54%. This shows a high retrogradation rate in the control sample. Additionally, sensory properties and retrogradation ratio suggest that the addition of 1.0% citric acid solution during rice cake production is efficient in retarding the retrogradation without an adverse effect on the rice cake modeling and acceptance.

Poly(ether sulfone) (PES) embedded diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy composites were fabricated for improving its mechanical properties and thermal stability. The mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact strength of the composites changed significantly with the introduction of PES. The value of the fracture toughness of this composite also was increased remarkably about 24%. Thermal stability of PES/epoxy composites also improved 12%, which was calculated with integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT). From the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) result, the curing temperature and curing heat decreased according to the increase of PES contents. These were attributed to the good distribution and the formation of the semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) composed of the epoxy network and linear PES.
