  • A bioterrorism attack is the deliberate release of viruses, bacteria, or other agents used to cause illness or death in people, animals, or plant. These agents are found in nature, but it is possible that they could be changed to increase their ability to cause disease, make them resistant to current medicines, or to increase their ability to be spread into the environment. Terrorists may use biological agents because these agents can be extremely difficult to detect and do not cause illness for several days. Some bioterrorism agents, like smallpox virus, can spread from person to person, like anthrax, can not. From these agents, we discussed the characteristics of biological agents and national safety regulation on the weapons of mass destruction including bioterrorism.

  • Biosensors, which are analysis devices used to convert biological reactions into electric signals, are made up of a receptor component and a signal transduction part. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are new types of carbon nanoparticles that have drawn a significant amount of attention in nanoparticle research. The unique features exhibited by GQDs and CQDs are their excellent fluorescence, biocompatibility, and low cytotoxicity. As a result of these features, carbon nanomaterials have been extensively studied in bioengineering, including biosensing and bioimaging. It is extremely important to find biomaterials that participate in biological processes. Biomaterials have been studied in the development of fluorescence-based detection methods. This review provides an overview of recent advances and new trends in the area of biosensors based on GQDs and CQDs as biosensor platforms for the detection of biomaterials using fluorescence. The sensing methods are classified based on the types of biomaterials, including nucleic acids, vitamins, amino acids, and glucose.

  • This study is based on crane fly specimens collected during more than 80 years, from 1937 through 2019, and are in collections maintained at the United States National Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, USA; at Korea University collection, Seoul, South Korea, and the National Institute of Biological Resources, Incheon, South Korea. Three species belonging to genus Phylidorea Bigot, 1854 originally were described from North Korea and in total four species were known from the Peninsula. Phylidorea (Phylidorea) multidentata (Alexander, 1938) is a Korean endemic. We are adding P. (P.) melanommata (Alexander, 1921) to the list of Korean species, which was previously recorded from Japan and Far East of Russia. We present general information on genus and subgenera, redescriptions of species based on Korean specimens, illustrations of both sexes, elevation range, period of activity, habitat information, general distribution, and a distribution map for the Korean Peninsula (including North Korea) for each species.

  • Amount of biological data information has been increasing exponentially. In order to cope with this bio-information explosion, it is necessary to construct a biological data information integration system. The integration system could provide useful services for bio-application developers by answering general complex queries that require accessing information from heterogeneous bio data sources, and easily accommodate a new database into the integrated systems. In this paper, we analyze architectures and mechanisms of existing integration systems with their advantages and disadvantages. Based on this analysis and user requirement studies, we propose an integration system framework that embraces advantages of the existing systems. More specifically, we propose an integration system architecture composed of a mediator and wrappers, which can offer a service interface layer for various other applications as well as independent biologists, thus playing the role of database management system for biology applications. In other words, the system can help abstract the heterogeneous information structures and formats from the application layer. In the system, the wrappers send database-specific queries and report the result to the mediator using XML. The proposed system could facilitate in silico knowledge discovery by allowing combination of numerous discrete biological information databases.

  • Indonesia is a mega-biodiversity country having at least one trillion US Dollars value of biological resources per year over the next 20 years. Indonesia is home to 11 percent of the world's flowering plant species and 12 percent of all mammals. Many of Indonesia's species and more than half of the archipelago's endemic plant species are found nowhere else on the Earth. This information is just a small portion of all higher plants and animals being found in Indonesia. Former studies described that total number of species in Indonesia is estimated more than 1,000,000 and most of them remain unknown scientifically. Most of lower plants and animals have not been studied yet, so that greatest portion of Indonesia's biological resources has never been assessed with respect to its economic value or conservation status. Many developed countries are building cooperation with Indonesia on resources, mainly in the fields of grant aid, socio-economic services, R & D, researcher exchange, technology transfer, infrastructure, education/training, finance, etc. Indonesia will obtain greater benefits and management of its biological richness via increasing its international capacity to add value and information to its biological diversity. These goals can be achieved by close international collaboration on search of important biological resources and other bioactive products that have potential economic values. Development of biological resource-based technology stands as the industry of the $21^{st}$ century and, therefore, Indonesia has a unique opportunity to lead the process in the world.

  • A biologically inspired fuzzy multilayer perceptron is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm is established under consideration of biological neuronal structure as well as fuzzy logic operation. We applied this suggested learning algorithm to benchmark problem in neural network such as exclusive OR and 3-bit parity, and to digit image recognition problems. For the comparison between the existing and proposed neural networks, the convergence speed is measured. The result of our simulation indicates that the convergence speed of the proposed learning algorithm is much faster than that of conventional backpropagation algorithm. Furthermore, in the image recognition task, the recognition rate of our learning algorithm is higher than of conventional backpropagation algorithm.

  • This paper presents the infectious watermarking model (IWM) for the protection of video contents that are based on biological virus modeling by the infectious route and procedure. Our infectious watermarking is designed as a new paradigm protection for video contents, regarding the hidden watermark for video protection as an infectious virus, video content as host, and codec as contagion medium. We used pathogen, mutant, and contagion as the infectious watermark and defined the techniques of infectious watermark generation and authentication, kernel-based infectious watermarking, and content-based infectious watermarking. We experimented with our watermarking model by using existing watermarking methods as kernel-based infectious watermarking and content-based infectious watermarking medium, and verified the practical applications of our model based on these experiments.

  • Cell membrane proteins play crucial roles in the cell's molecular interaction with its environment and within itself. They consist of membrane-bound proteins and many types of transmembrane (TM) proteins such as receptors, transporters, channel proteins, and enzymes. Membrane proteomes of cellular organisms reveal some characteristics in their global topological distribution according to their evolutionary positions, and show their own information transfer complexity. Predicted transmembrane segments (TMSs) in membrane proteomes with HMMTOP showed near power-law distribution and frequency characteristics in 6-TMS and 7-TMS proteins in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, respectively. This reaffirms the important roles of membrane receptors in cellular communication and biological evolutionary history.
