At present, the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process for removal of nitrogen and phosphorus is being constructing to keep pace with the reinforced standard of effluent quality and the traditional activated sludge process of preexistence is being promoting to retrofit. At the most case of retrofitting, processes are subjected to be under consideration as alternative BNR process for retrofitting. However, process evaluation methods are restricted to compare only treatment efficiency. Therefore, when BNR process apply, process evaluation was needed various method for treatment efficiency as well as sludge production and aeration cost, and all. In this study, the evaluation method of alternative process was suggested for the case for retrofitting S wastewater treatment plant which has been operated the standard activated sludge process. Three BNR processes for evaluation of proper alternatative process were selected and evaluated with suggested method. The selected $A^2$/O, VIP and DNR processes were evaluated using the mathematical model which is time and cost effective as well as gathered objective evaluation criteria. The evaluation between 5 individual criteria was possible including sludge production and energy efficiency as well as treatment performance. The objective final decision method for selection of optimal process was established through the fuzzy inference.

The amount of waste water generated from the domestic sources is consistently increasing in proportion to economic growth, and the conventional activated sludge process is widely being used for general waste water treatment. But the ministry of environment becomes stringthent treatment standards of N and P (less than 20mg/L of N, 2mg/L of P) to prevent the eutrophication of lake water, and therefore highly advanced treatment technology is required not only in the existing treatment plants where the activated sludge process is being used, but also in newly constructed treatment plants for the treatment of N and P. This study is aimed at highly operating the engineering technology method was developed by domestic to eliminate N and P at the same time. Experiments were conducted in the treatment plant located in Yong In city. The bioreactor was started from the principal equipment for the elimination of N and P and the elimination of organic compounds. It consists of an internal recycle piping from the end of the aerobic tank to the anoxic tank and external recycle piping from the final settling basin to the denitrification tank. By experiment of 4 types separate inflow of waste water to the denitrification tank and the anaerobic tank, and changes in staying time at the anoxic tank and the aerobic tank, the elimination of organic compounds in each type and the relationship in the efficiency between the elimination of N and P were researched.
Where an activated sludge system needs to be converted to biological nutrient removal(BNR) system, the secondary clarifier must handle higher MLSS from bioreactor since nitrification in BNR system that requires higher SRTs than activated sludge system. Either increase the clarifier size or modification of clarifier physical structure is required to cope with MLSS surge. One of recommended structural modification is the insertion of Lamellar within clarifier. In this study, two clarifiers - one has Lamellar structure inserted and the other does not - were used to compare the effect of Lamellar in solid/liquid separation. Same MLSS was fed to both clarifiers and concentrations of MLSS were varied. With all MLSS concentrations, attachment of MLSS on Lamellar was observed and it was found that detached MLSS caused the higher effluent SS concentrations than that of non-Lamellar clarifier effluent. From these results, Lamellar should not be inserted in clarifier to handle MLSS from BNR processes and the recommendation must be withdrawn.

This study was performed to investigate the removal efficiencies of pollutants at various filtration rates and the quality of the filtered water along the depth of filter media during treatment of a BNR process effluent by a dual-media gravitational rapid filtration. The results of the experiments at filtration rates of 200, 300 and 400 m/day using the effluent of a pilot scale 4-stage BNR plant showed that turbidity of the filtered water was below 2.6 NTU, satisfying the Korean standard for water for reuse. Even though the SS removal efficiency deteriorated as the filtration rate increased, the average SS concentration of the filtered water was 1.3 mg/L at all filtration rates. Simultaneous biological nitrification and denitrification was observed with nitrification efficiencies of 17.4, 18.8 and 14.3%, and denitrification efficiencies of 32.3, 27.7 and 21.4% respectively at filtration rates of 200, 300 and 400 m/day. At the latter period of each filtration cycle, the effluent T-P concentration was higher than influent T-P concentration by 6.1 to 21.4% due to phosphorous release under DO-deficient condition.
A batch and a continuous type experiments were conducted to test the conditions for simultaneous phosphorus release and uptake, and denitrification, taking place in one process. The bacteria able to denitrify as well as to remove phosphorus were evaluated for the application to biological nutrient removal(BNR) process. In the batch-type experiment, simultaneous reactions of phosphorus release and uptake, and also denitrification were observed under anoxic condition with high organic and nitrate loading. However the rate and the degree of P release were lower than that occurred under anaerobic condition. BNR processes composed of anaerobic-anoxic-oxic(AXO), anoxic-anaerobic-oxic(XAO) and anoxic-oxic(XO) were operated in continuous condition. The anoxic reactors in each process received nitrate loading. In the AXO process, P release in anaerobic reactor and the luxury uptake in oxic reactor proceeded actively regardless to nitrate loading. However in XAO and XO processes, P release and luxury uptake occurred only with the nitrate loading less than $0.07\;kg{NO_3}^--N$/kgMLSS-d. With higher nitrate load, P release increased and the luxury uptake decreased. Therefore, it appeared that the application of denitrifying phosphorus-removing bacteria (DPB) to BNR process must first resolve the problem with decrease of luxury uptake of phosphorus in oxic reactor.

The Intermittent Aeration MBR systems have the advantage of controlling reaction time by changing aeration period and are one of economic BNR systems since these processes do not require MLSS recirculation that demands capital and operation costs. In this study, two intermittent aeration MBR systems were studied by computer simulation: an intermittent aeration MBR system that had both 1hr/1hr and 4hr/4hr aeration/unaeration periods at intermittent reactor and NEW INTERMITTENT-process that was an energy saving process and certified as a new process by Korean government. Since DO concentration reached only at 0.23mg/L at intermittent reactor when it was aerated, the Intermittent aeration MBR system having 1hr/1hr aeration/unaeration period showed simultaneous nitrification/denitrification and had the highest nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies that were 57% and 55%, respectively. Since this study was based on the constant influent flow and characteristics, more studies are needed to define the operational characteristics of intermittent aeration MBR systems under dynamic influent conditions.
Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus in two sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs). SBBR1 had a short first non-aeration period and SBBR2 had a long first non-aeration period. The removal characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus in each SBBR were precisely observed according to the variation of influent TOC concentration, and the operation control parameters (pH, DO concentration, ORP) in each reactor were measured. In biological nitrogen removal, there was little difference between SBBR1 and SBBR2 and the nitrogen removal efficiencies were very low. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal characteristics in high influent TOC concentration were different from those in low TOC. Nitrogen removals by simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) were occurred in both SBBR1 and SBBR2. The P removal in SBBR1 was superior to that in SBBR2. The second P release was observed in SBBR1 which had long second non-aeration period.

In this study, we investigated the possibility of auto control and the proper operating factors in the BNR(Biological Nutrient Removal) process using an NADH(Reduced Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) fluorometer, which characterized the emitted fluorescence when activated by flashes of UV light at 460 nm. In terms of finding adequate operating parameters, results indicted that nitrification efficiency decreased in the controlled DO while denitrification efficiency decreased in the controlled pH. The above results indicated that controlled operating condition after combination with NADH, DO and pH was resonable. Result obtained from the correlation between NADH and pH showed that variation trend of influent loading was similar to those of NADH and pH, and also the variation cycle was repeated on a daily basis. Consequently, this result showed the increase of BOD loading caused the nitrification efficiency to decrease because air-flow, required for nitrification, was reduced, and so the NADH value was increased. From these results, it is possible to use NADH flourimetry to assess the variation of organic load and nitrification efficiency in the case of small change in influent pH such as in sewage and also to handle and operate the load variation in the auto control system using the NADH fluorometer.

The pilot study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of air flotation(AF) processes combined with biological nutrient removal(BNR) for the retrofitting of conventional wastewater treatment facilities. The BNR system was operated in pre-denitrification and intermittent aeration; developed ceramic membrane diffusers were installed to separate the solid-liquid of activated sludge at the bottom of a flotation tank. Before performing a pilot scale study, the size distribution of microbubbles generated by silica or alumina-based ceramic membrane diffusers was tested to identify the ability of solid-liquid separation. According to the experimental results, the separation and thickening efficiency of the alumina-based ceramic membrane diffuser was higher than the silica-based ceramic membrane diffuser. In a $100m^3/d$ pilot plant, thickened and return sludge concentration was measured to be higher than 15,000mg SS/L, therefore, the MLSS in the bioreactor was maintained at over 3,000mg SS/L. The effluent quality of the AF-BNR process was 4.2mg/L, 3.7mg/L, 10.6mg/L and 1.6mg/L for $BOD_5$, SS, T-N and T-P, respectively. Lastly, it was revealed that the unit treatment cost by flotation process is lower than about $1won/m^3$ compared to a gravity sedimentation process.
Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to compare the performance of two types of sequencing batch reactor(SBR) systems, anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic $((AO)_2)$ SBR and anoxic-oxic-anoxic $(A_2O)$ SBR on the biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Also, the profiles of DO and pH in reactors were used to monitor the biological nutrient removal in two SBRs. The break point in the pH and DO curves at the oxic period coincided with the end of nitrifying activity at about 1 h 30 min in oxic phase, and the change in pH appears to be related to nitrate concentration. The TOC removal efficiency in $A_2O$ SBR was higher than that in $(AO)_2$ SBR. The denitrification was completed at the influent period. The 2nd non-aeration and aeration periods were not necessary for the nitrogen and phosphorus removal because of the low influent TOC concentration in this study. The release and uptake of phosphorus in $AO_2$ SBR was much higher than that in $(AO)_2SBR.$ In order to uptake more phosphorus, the 1st aeration period in $A_2O$ SBR should be prolonged.
