  • Organic compounds play an important role in the area of pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and other materials, which possess useful biological activities. Generally, such biological activities are come from the interaction of the organic compounds with the receptors in biological system, such as enzymes. Such receptors are composed of the chiral building blocks such as amino acid or carbohydrate, which means the biological active sites of receptors are chiral. (omiited)

  • Energy storage not only reduces the mismatch between supply and demand but also improves the performance and reliability of energy systems. The different forms of energy that can be stored, including mechanical, electrical and thermal energy. Phase change materials (PCM) are latent heat storage materials. A large number of phase change materials (organic, inorganic and eutectic) are available in any required temperature range. We concentrated on eutectic materials and made a eutectic by mixing urea and choline chloride. Heat capacity ($C_p$) is one of the most important properties to be considered when a process is developed using the eutectic and currently DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) has been proved as an effective technique to measure the heat capacity. This study focused on measuring heat capacity ($C_p$) of the mixing urea and choline chloride by DSC.

  • We fabricated several composite membranes with selectively permeable performance designed to facilitate water vapor transport and resist DMMP vapor permeation. Materials for selective permeable membrane were based on polyvinyl alcohol and functional polymer containing basic functional group. With these materials, we characterized selectively permeable performance to identify next-generation material with chemical-biological protective capability. Results showed that polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) materials possessed performance with superior water vapor permeation ($2,200{\sim}2,900g/m^2/day$) and protective capability against DMMP vapor ($47g/m^2/day$).

  • Atmospheric pressure plasma is used in the biological and medical fields. Miniaturization and safety are important in the application of apply atmospheric plasma to bio devices. In this study, we made a small, pocket-sized inverter for the discharge of atmospheric plasma. We used pulse power to control the neutral gas temperature at which the, when plasma was discharged. We used direct current of 5 V of bias(voltage). The output voltage is about 1 to 2 kilo volts the frequency is about 80 kilo hertz. We analyzsed the characteristics of the atmospheric plasma using OES(Optical emission spectroscopy) and the Current-Voltage characteristic of pulse power. By calculating of the current voltage characteristics, we were able to determine that, when the duty ratio increased, the power that actually effects the plasma discharge also increased. To apply atmospheric plasma to human organisms, the temperature is the most important factor, we were able to control the temperature by modulating the pulse power duty ratio. This means we can use atmospheric plasma on the human body or in other areas of the medical field.

  • For the advancement of research in biological education in Korea, research trends shown in Journal of Biological Education(JBE)of England were analyzed by using a PC program(REFMENU). Papers Published in JBE between 1977 and 1987 were registered on the program with classifying keys of biological education and biology including names of authors, year, title, volume pages, and key words. Those input-date were analyzed by sorting depend-ing on either the classifying keys or the key words. Among the 361 papers 28.8% was dealing with the theory of science education. The rest dealt with biology and biological education, together. Of the six categories of biological education, the research on biological curriculum was 41 % of total and was the most. The major trends in this category was in developing the content of the curriculum. In the research of biological instruction, 37 papers dealt with the instruction theory and the rest 60 papers dealt with the tactics of Instruction. Of the 60 papers on materials in biological education, the research in developing the biological material was the most. Thus, the general research trend was far more practical aspect than the theoretical aspect of biological education. In the analysis of the papers depending on the biological categories, the one dealt with ecology was the most(26.8%). The rest papers showed almost even distribution in the 13 categories of biology. The results of this analysis was discussed by comparing with the research trends in Korea to suggest the possible future studies.

  • Multigram-scale product exclusively containing magnetic carbon nanoparticles (MNCPs) with uniform size was successfully fabricated without a specific separation process. The iron-doped PPy nanoparticles were synthesized by micelle templating and used as the carbon precursor in order to generate MCNPs. The magnetic carbon nanoparticles possessed a microporous structure and exhibited ferromagnetic properties at room temperature. This approach may be an effective alternative to generate magnetic carbon nanoparticles against the conventional arc-discharge technique.
