  • Chrysosplenium grayanum Maxim. (Series Nepalensia), which had been known to be restricted to Japan, was newly discovered from Mt. Cheongtae in Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Species identification was confirmed using morphological characteristics and DNA sequence data, while comparing with materials obtained from Japan and herbarium specimens. Chrysosplenium grayanum is clearly distinguished from the remaining taxa of the genus Chrysosplenium by having glabrous plant body, opposite leaves, cylindrical papillae with roundish head at the tip on the smooth seed surface, and four stamens. Molecular sequence data of the nuclear ribosomal ITS regions, chloroplast rbcL and matK genes strongly supported that this previously unknown Chrysosplenium species from Korea is C. grayanum. Taking the molecular and the morphological evidence into consideration, it is clear that newly discovered Chrysosplenium population in Korea is conspecific with the widely distributed C. grayanum in Japan. In this paper, we provide a description, illustration, and photo images of Chrysosplenium grayanum from Korea and also a key to the Chrysosplenium species in Korea.

  • The statistical regression model is one of the most frequently used clinical analysis methods. It has basic assumption of linearity, additivity and normal distribution of data. However, most of biological data in medical field are nonlinear and unevenly distributed. To overcome the discrepancy between the basic assumption of statistical model and actual biological data, we propose a new analytical method based on artificial neural network. The newly developed multilayer perceptron(MLP) is trained with 120 data set (60 normal, 60 patient). On applying test data, it shows the discrimination power of 0.76. The diabetic risk factors were also identified from the MLP neural network model and the logistic regression model. The signigicant risk factors identified by MLP model were post prandial glucose level(PP2), sex(male), fasting blood sugar(FBS) level, age, SBP, AC and WHR. Those from the regression model are sex(male), PP2, age and FBS. The combined risk factors can be identified using the MLP model. Those are total cholesterol and body weight, which is consistent with the result of other clinical studies. From this experiment we have learned that MLP can be applied to the combined risk factor analysis of biological data which can not be provided by the conventional statistical method.

  • In emergency telemedicine system based on wireless communication system with limited transmission capacity, it is necessary to transmit the biological data (ECG, BP, Respiration, $SpO_2$) of the patient continuously and reliably in real time. For this service, it is necessary to data compression and error control. In this study, we designed an protocol for error control in application layer and implemented it on the biological data transmission program for an emergency telemedicine system based on wireless data communication system.

  • Due to the lack of digitally usable standards, it has been known to be difficult to handle the biological data. For example, the name of genes and proteins changes over time or has several synonyms indicating different entities. To cope with these problems, several communities, including the Gene Ontology Consortium and PubGene are making their efforts to move science toward the semantic web vision. Although some progress has been made, its expressivity is not sufficient for full-fledged ontological modeling and reasoning. This paper suggests a methodology for representing and extracting biological knowledge by using Web Ontology Language (OWL) as an extension of Resource Description Framework Schema (RDFS). Some benefits of our approach are: (1) to ensure extended sharing of biological meta data on the Web, and (2) to enrich additional expressivity and the semantics of RDFS+OWL.

  • This paper proposes a method of noninvasive reflectance light to measure the blood fractional volume (Vb) and oxygen saturation ($SO_2$) of biological tissue. We chose the red light of 660nm and infrared light of 880nm. In Vivo reflectance data were obtained by the physiological changes front the surface of the skin over the calf in human subject. The reflected light intensity from different layers within a biological tissue was measured by specially designed reflectometer to apply photon path diffusion model. The collected data represent the changes of blood (ractional volume and oxygen saturation at each reflected light wavelengths. The data evaluation was assessed by examining the slopes of the plotted indices for the changes in oxygen saturation and blood (ractional volume. The results presented in this paper claim that light reflectance can separately discriminate the change of blood volume and that of oxygenation in muscle and also in skin.

  • In this paper, we have implemented the telemedicine system which has a color image system and a biosignal processor. The inputted image is acquisited to 512 by 480 color image data. The col looted data is compressed to 1/5 of the original image data by using 1/5 and compression algorithm. A biological signals are inputted by 12 bit A/D converter into the system. In case of using 2400bps modem, a frame full color image data and biological information data needed 10 minutes in transmission.

  • BOD is an FTP service management tool on the Internet. It was developed for biological researchers in South Korea. It enables easier and faster access of bioinformation without having to go through foreign FTP sites. BOD includes an automatic downloader with a management and email alert service from which the user can easily select and schedule any biological database. Once listed in BOD, the user can check and modify the download status and data from an additional email alert service.

  • In attempting to identify effective anticancer drugs from natural products that are harmless to humans, we found that the gomisin J from Schisandra chinensis fruit has anticancer activity. Schisandra chinensis fruits are used in traditional herbal medicine and gomisin J is one of their chemical constituents. In the present study, we examined the anticancer activity of gomisin J in MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines and in MCF10A normal cell line, in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. Our data revealed that gomisin J exerted a much stronger cytotoxic effect on MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cells than on MCF10A normal cells. Gomisin J suppressed the proliferation and decreased the viability of MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cells at relatively low (<10 ㎍/ml) and high (>30 ㎍/ml) concentrations, respectively. Our data also revealed that gomisin J induced necroptosis, a programmed form of necrosis, as well as apoptosis. Notably, gomisin J predominantly induced necroptosis in MCF7 cells that are known to have high resistance to many pro-apoptotic anticancer drugs, while MDA-MB-231 exhibited a much lower level of necroptosis but instead a higher level of apoptosis. This data indicated the possibility that it may be used as a more effective anticancer drug, especially in apoptosis-resistant malignant cancer cells. In an extended study, gomisin J exhibited a strong cytotoxic effect on all tested various types of 13 cancer cell lines, indicating its potential to be used against a wide range of different types of cancer cells.

  • Cluster analysis has proven to be a useful tool for investigating the association structure among genes and samples in a microarray data set. We applied several cluster validation measures to evaluate the performance of clustering algorithms for analyzing microarray gene expression data, including hierarchical clustering, K-means, PAM, SOM and model-based clustering. The available validation measures fall into the three general categories of internal, stability and biological. The performance of clustering algorithms is evaluated using simulated and SRBCT microarray data. Our results from simulated data show that nearly every methods have good results with same result as the number of classes in the original data. For the SRBCT data the best choice for the number of clusters is less clear than the simulated data. It appeared that PAM, SOM, model-based method showed similar results to simulated data under Silhouette with of internal measure as well as PAM and model-based method under biological measure, while model-based clustering has the best value of stability measure.

  • Especially in Korea, LNG terminals commonly have huge scale because of the high demand of natural gas, and for the safe operation of terminal wide observation on temperature is necessary. That is the reason why the terminal has thermometer all over the facility but another information, flow rate, is insufficient. By the way, in pipeline, temperature difference is highly related with flow rate and with some simple assumptions, we can estimate flow rate. And through the steady state data reconciliation, the flow rate data become more reliable. In this research, we will study about flow rate data reconciliation method for LNG terminal and case study.
