  • To investigate the catching efficiency of a biodegradable round trap for a swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus), four types of material (two types of biodegradable net, one type of biodegradable plus polyethylene net and one type of polyethylene net) for traps were used in the field test, and the field tests were carried out 11 times in the Boryeong fishing ground of Korea, 2012~2013. The catching efficiency of four type traps was analyzed by catch per trap, weight per trap and mean weight per individual of small and large size swimming crab. Statistical Kruskal-Wallis test was carried out to verify the significant difference for the efficiency between types of material. The catch in number of swimming crab was 9,015 and formed about 94.3% of total catch. In the results of catching efficiency of traps, there was a little difference in catch per trap, weight per trap and mean weight per individual of swimming crab in-situ data. But there was no significant difference in catching efficiency between the biodegradable traps and the PE trap (P>0.05), so it's needed to use widely a biodegradable trap for the conservation and sustainable management of swimming crab resources.

  • Cards made from PVC and PET materials do not oxidize or decompose readily, so they are generally incinerated or landfilled after use and cause pollution problems, such as environmental hormones and combustion gases during incineration. In addition, there is a problem of environmental pollution because they are discarded as semi-permanent refuse without being decomposed at landfill. This study attempted to solve this problem using polylactic acid (PLA), which is a representative biodegradable material as a substitute material that can solve the issues with these cards. On the other hand, when the thin card core sheet is made from only PLA material, the physical properties of the material are insufficient, such as the low temperature impact strength, high temperature stability, and poor bending properties, so its use is limited. To solve this problem, the compositional ratio of PLA was reviewed, and the optimal biodegradable compound composition was determined through an examination of the compositions, such as crystallization nucleating agents, additives, and nano compound technology. The high functionalization as a biodegradable card was verified through a laminating process using annealing technology.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to identify the effects of three aesthetic restorative materials on the wear between tooth and restoration by a pin-on-disk manner. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Six aesthetic restorative materials were used to prepare disk specimens for wear test, which were Lava Zirconia as zirconia group, Vintage MP and Cerabien ZR as veneering porcelain group, Gradia Direct microhybrid composite containing prepolymerized fillers, Filtek Z250 microhybrid composite containing zirconia glass and colloidal silica particles, and Filtek Z350 nanocomposite as composite resin group. Vertical loss of the worn cusp, change of the surface roughness of the restoration materials, and the surface topography were investigated after wear test under 9.8-N contact load. RESULTS. The porcelain groups (Vintage MP and Cerabien ZR) caused the largest vertical loss of teeth when compared with those of the composite resin and zirconia groups, and Filtek Z250 microhybrid composite results in the second-largest vertical loss of teeth. The surface of Filtek Z350 nanocomposite was deeply worn out, but visible wear on the surface of the zirconia and Gradia Direct microhybrid composite was not observed. When the zirconia surface was roughened by sand-blasting, vertical loss of teeth considerably increased when compared with that in the case of fine polished zirconia. CONCLUSION. It was identified that microhybrid composite resin containing a prepolymerized filler and zirconia with reduced surface roughness by polishing were the most desirable restorative materials among the tested materials to prevent the two-body wear between aesthetic restorative material and tooth.

  • This paper surveys the latest findings on vegetable-oil-based dielectric coolants in power systems. In recent years, environmental concerns have been increased on the use of poorly biodegradable mineral oils in distribution and power transformers in regions where spills from leaks and equipment failure could contaminate the surroundings. In addition, there are demands to improve equipment efficiencies in power systems. In this reason, researches were started in the mid 1990s to develop a fully biodegradable dielectric coolants. Vegetable oil was considered the most likely candidate for a fully biodegradable dielectric coolants. Vegetable-oil-based dielectric coolants provide the advantages of high level of biodegradability, renewable natural resource, non-toxic properties, enhanced fire safety, more effective cooling and good dielectric strength for many electrical equipment.

  • Mulching technique is used to control the temperature and moisture content of soil by covering the ground surface. Most kinds of mulching film are made of polyethylene which is non-biodegradable synthetic polymer. Utilizing these films has been one of the main sources in soil pollution. Thus residual films under the ground should be removed after a certain period of time. Therefore, an alternative mulching material made of biodegradable functional paper is considered instead of non-biodegradable films. The mulching sheet produced from paper basis has a functionality to be naturally degraded and then recycled to the bio-materials on soil. In this study, the paper based-mulching sheet coated with biodegradable polymer was specially produced using a laboratory bar coater. Coating colors prepared by dissolving PBS/PLA in chloroform were applied to kraft paper. The mechanical strength and aging properties of this mulching sheet were investigated. The burst strength of polymer-coated paper was decreased with the increase of the PBS ratio in PBS/PLA blends, and, in particular, 30/70 blending condition led to good stability in heat-aging atmosphere for 60 days.

  • Purpose: Most surgeons have used autogenous cartilage for columella strut graft. But the supply of autogenous cartilage is often limited. So, this study is to investigate the usefulness of biodegradable plate as columella strut material. Methods: We studied 19 patients who have secondary cleft nasal deformity. Patients were divided into two groups. Group A patients who were not closed their growth plate underwent columella strut graft only with biodegradable plate through endonasal approach. The biodegradable plate was inserted between nasal tip and anterior nasal spine. Group B patients were closed their growth plate. They had an operation for columella strut graft with biodegradable plate fixed with autogenous conchal cartilage. If nasal tip projection was insufficient, we performed additionally onlay graft on nasal tip with autogenous soft tissue or remnant cartilage. Results: As a result of mean 14 months follow-up, we achieved a good nasal tip projection, narrowing of interalar distance and symmetrical nostril shape. No specific complications were reported except 2 cases, which were the extrusion of biodegradable plate into the nasal cavity and Staphylococcus aureus infection. Conclusion: The columella strut graft using biodegradable plate is simple and effective method. Biodegradable plate can be a good substitute for columella strut in patients who can not use autogenous cartilages.

  • A research on scaffold fabrication has been progressed in many research groups. However, the mechanical properties of existing biodegradable materials are still not satisfactory. But, PPF (poly (propylene fumarate)) has a good mechanical property in comparison to other biodegradable materials. Nevertheless, the viscosity of the synthesized PPF is too high to fabricate structures using micro-stereolithography. Therefore, the viscosity of the resin was made low by adding the diethyl fumarate and this material could be used in micro-stereolithography apparatus. Then, a photoinitiator was added for photo crosslinking of the DEF/PPF resin. 2.5D and 3D scaffolds were fabricated our system and curing characteristics of the resin were analyzed through the experiment.

  • In spite water direct seeding cultivation of rice has advantages in terms of laborsaving and cost-down, it demonstrates uneven seedling establishment and difficult weed management. To select an applicable mat for mulching system of water seeded rice, weed occurrence, growth and yield performances of rice, and soil temperature were evaluated in several kinds of biodegradable mulching material. Field studies were conducted at the experimental farm of National Crop Experiment Station in 1999 and 2000. Among the mats tested in 1999, Safer-mat had the greatest effect on inhibiting weed occurrence and Lawn-mat demonstrated the least efficacy of weed control (EWC) value. In Safer-mat treatment, Ludwigia prostrata was the dominant weed species but Echinochloa crus-galli was not observed. Different kinds of mulching material from the mats studied in 1999 were tested in 2000. Biodegradable polyester (PES) coated on the recycled paper for newspaper press (RP) treatments showed similar or higher EWC values than non-mulched broadcast seed rice with 2 times of herbicide application (BC-herbicide) and Safer-mat that was the most effective mat on preventing weed appearance in 1999. Immediately after mat mulching on the surface of paddy soil, five pregerminated rice seeds were manually sown in each 3cm-hole formerly punctured at 30${\times}$14 cm spacing in 2000. All the 3 kinds of mulching material tested in 2000 had better seedling stand than BC-herbicide treatment. Rice yield in PES coated with 10 thickness on RP (PES10 $\mu\textrm{m}$+RP) was a little higher than in BC-herbicide treatment but the former produced less panicles in unit land area than the latter. PES10 $\mu\textrm{m}$+RP demonstrated a great effect on raising soil surface temperature than non-mulching treatment throughout the period of seedling establishment.
